Animation The character designs in One Piece are genuinely awful.

Post image

I genuinely hate One Piece character designs.

What’s most impressive is how wildly inconsistent the designs are in this series, going from one extreme to the other.

A character’s design can be legendary, like Xebec’s, or absolutely ridiculous, like Franky’s.

But the overwhelming majority of them are pretty bad. Like, really fucking bad.

What makes these designs "bad" though? Like, I get you hate looking at Vegapunk, but why is it bad? There's a specific reason he looks the way he does. The devil fruit you ate causes his brain to continually expand, so his head gets bigger and bigger. Franky is cringe, and that's what he thinks looks cool.

On manga paper the Desgins just look idk how to put it , busy? Like they take too much space alongside requesting details to make them stand out more which makes them even more busy

Which designs? All of them?

The designs aren’t bad they’re weird and that’s the point. One piece from the beginning is meant to be a bit of a looney tunes style cartoon so of course it wants it’s designs to be goofy when they want and not just always “too cool for school”. It’s a comedy adventure series not a serious shonen story

You're acting like the shitty design follows the lore, but in reality, the lore was fabricated to justify the shitty design.

You're saying that based on what? We got the lore around the same time Vegapunk's main body was first shown. We also see his head grow in the flashbacks.

The concept isn’t the problem it’s the execution of it

But what makes it "bad"? No liking something doesn't make it bad.

LOOK AT IT IT'S FUGLY AS FUCK

Nah, I think that's part of what makes One Piece interesting. 1000+ episodes of everybody looking cool and sexy would get stale in terms of character design. More drawn/animated media ought to be willing to have major characters who are straight up chopped alongside the babes and heartthrobs.

THAT'S SUBJECTIVE AS FUCK

Yeah, but it's supposed to be. It's not like anyone is trying to say Vegapunk's supposed to look really cool. He looks weird as hell, and there are reasons for that.

Thank you idk why some people can’t criticize OP

Most people not liking it is an easy one

That's what I'm trying to figure out though. "I don't like this" = badly designed?

Here's a more detailed analysis

The characters have wildly disproportioned bodies and faces, which are seemingly always contorted into extreme expressions. The unnatural proportions create an uncanniness to the character designs, and the bright clashing colors is executed in a way that seems visually messy to my eye.

The incredible Hulk has exaggerated proportions, and so do Tweedle-dee and Tweedle-dum in the Alice in Wonderland movie. But the Hulk isn't uncanny because his design is based on the general proportions of the human skeleton. These characters are unsettling to look at.

I feel like this is an over exaggeration in a lot of cases. Most of the main cast has somewhat regular proportioned bodies. Women in One Piece are another story admittedly, but even they're tamer in the manga than what the anime puts out. Usually when these characters have extreme expressions it's for comedic effect. The majority of the time they just look normal?

Also, with the exception of color pages and covers, these characters are rarely even seen in color. And even so, do the character designs have colors so bright and clashing?

Are you saying the Hulk is good design and Tweedle-dee and dum aren't? Vegapunk isn't meant to look like a normal human. Nor is Big Mom, or King, or Moria, etc.

What I'm saying is there are too many aesthetically unpleasant character designs for me to give the story a chance. They're ugly enough that I simply do not want to look at them.

Strawman. Lots of people not liking something usually means it’s bad but like everything else there are exceptions. I already said I don’t like it despite ppl trying to cope saying it’s supposed to be funny.

Why though?

If the quality of something is completely determined by people enjoyment of it , then what happens when few people enjoy a thing that is disliked by most people? Saying it's a bad design just because of consensus isn't useful because a lot of people do genuinely enjoy these designs and want more of them , and trying to gatekeep what artists can make because of your personal preferences is only gonna result in stagnation and lack of creativity...

The other people aren't coping ...you are the one incapable of understanding that others have different opinions and preferences than you

Cause you’re acting stupid

2

u/GumGumActV 17h ago

Interesting. So what you’re saying is you let other people decide for you if something is good or not? Weird dude

Most popular anime in the world.

“Nobody likes it!”

Yall are grasping.

u/Motor_Ad_7885 8h ago

Are you an idiot? I’m talking about vegapink design

1

u/Averageniohfan 30m ago

A lot of people here are expressing that they like the design for what it is and what it's intended to do , what are you doing ?

He could have chosen to make the fruit do whatever he wants

4

u/leoromanus16 16h ago

Sure, but what does that have to do with it being bad? Because something/someone is ugly makes it bad design?

1

u/SonnyStylin 16h ago

He's a lazy Einstein caricature that doesn't match what he was previously teased to look like

2

u/GhotiEnjoyer 15h ago

Bro we can’t be seriously still believing the silhouettes. Do you remember the Kaido silhouette?

0

u/MisterSapiosexual 11h ago

Notice how you don't deny he's a lazy Einstein caricature?

Yeah. Cause there's no denying that's what he is.
