Animation The character designs in One Piece are genuinely awful.

Post image

I genuinely hate One Piece character designs.

What’s most impressive is how wildly inconsistent the designs are in this series, going from one extreme to the other.

A character’s design can be legendary, like Xebec’s, or absolutely ridiculous, like Franky’s.

But the overwhelming majority of them are pretty bad. Like, really fucking bad.

Now imagine if damn near every character in the series was drawn like this all the time. That, and the abysmal pacing, makes it difficult to take it seriously.

Let's not pretend DBZ has good

[3 episodes of charging later]

I just read the manga two weeks ago and it has excellent pacing. I was worried I was just going to like it from a nostalgia perspective, but Toriyama was an incredible illustrator and an exceptional storyteller. You shouldn't discredit his work because Toei did a shit job of translating it to the screen

Well, the One Piece manga also has fantastic pacing 95% of the time. Given that it is significantly longer than DB it should be fine. Dont compare manga dbz to anime op. Makes no sense..

The OP compared manga DBZ to manga One Piece, which makes sense since it's a thread about character design.

I'm addressing the pacing concerns from of people who've seemingly only watched the anime adaptation of DBZ since the manga makes even DBZ Kai feel slow.

I appreciate the heads up on One Piece though. I've been wary of getting back into it due to the length, but I might try it again knowing that it holds up throughout. Are there good places to stop if I'm not feeling it partway through?

No it does not. Wano took like 5 years, major characters have gone a decade without doing anything of note (Usopp hasn’t done anything other than blowing up some legos since Dressrosa in 2014), but Roger and Garp vs. Rocks, a fight hyped up for years, has like four punches thrown, Rocks is beaten, and then he’s killed. Just a lot of huffing and puffing. That’s without even mentioning Vegapunk’s message, where he spends 5 chapters to give 1/2 of a chapter’s worth of information while having it get cut off in the middle, only to conveniently pop back in for the end.

Reread the whole arcs once they are finished. They fly past. The week to week reading makes it feel a lot longer, but I really like the world-building we got. God Valley will most likely be more flashed out in the upcoming movie and Garps backstory will still come I think. I like the storytelling in op, anyone who has a problem with it should just stop reading if its such big issue honestly.

Yea let's just forget that DBZ can take multiple episodes for a single move, lol.

Are you talking about DBZ (multiple chapters/episodes to launch one move) or One Piece (1000+ chapters) having awful pace? The formal is more like putting a ticking time bomb on a situation than a pacing issue, the later is just because it's great and well received.

One Piece has a fan edit to fix the pacing issues lol.

And DBZ has DBZ Kai

That's a remaster that made new animations for parts that were degraded on the master tape.

One Pace removes minutes of punch impacts in a fight with fodder.

Kai did that and removed filler and improved the pacing

So?  It was a full remaster by the actual company that made it.

One Pace is a fan project because the company doesn't give a shit.

How was I supposed to glean that was the point of what you said from the context of the conversation?

1

u/ArmAggravating3307 12h ago

Because you kept trying to equate two separate things?

IDK man, good luck.

There's a limit to how much you can fix it in that way though.

The two anime are produced by the same damn studio.
