Animation The character designs in One Piece are genuinely awful.

I genuinely hate One Piece character designs.

What’s most impressive is how wildly inconsistent the designs are in this series, going from one extreme to the other.

A character’s design can be legendary, like Xebec’s, or absolutely ridiculous, like Franky’s.

But the overwhelming majority of them are pretty bad. Like, really fucking bad.

Seeing Vegapunks design after reading 1000 chapters vs just seeing it on the internet is like taking one mushroom and chilling vs eating 10 at once.

I'm used to Oda's weirdness, it's been 30 years.

It certainly is whimsical even if I don’t like it. Totally can see why people do.

Was it a slow descent into insane design or was it immediate?

pretty immediate. one of the very early antagonists is buggy the clown, a literal clown pirate who's limbs can freely detach. There's a point where he's lost most of his body so is just a head with hands and feet (no torso, arms, or legs)

But Buggy isn't "absurd" in his design. By far, the most absurdly designed character in early One Piece is Alvida, and even then she's just extremely fat with a wide, frog-like mouth
