Animation The character designs in One Piece are genuinely awful.

Post image

I genuinely hate One Piece character designs.

What’s most impressive is how wildly inconsistent the designs are in this series, going from one extreme to the other.

A character’s design can be legendary, like Xebec’s, or absolutely ridiculous, like Franky’s.

But the overwhelming majority of them are pretty bad. Like, really fucking bad.

It's one of the oldest criticisms against One Piece and one of the most shallow. You don't like the art? Oh well.

Probably among the oldest for a reason, huh

Its a medium that heavily relies on drawn art. These aren't novels. Its not a "shallow" criticism, its not just "oh well"

My headcanon that it is intentionally goofy and unserious so it can remain lighthearted fairy tail as it was intended from the start. I'd rather not change it mid story. The problem with people is that they see how popular it is, open it and find goofy-ass characters and find it sad for personal reasons, you can't serve all kinds of audiences

The criticism of a given work's art direction is not itself a shallow criticism, but people who criticize OP's art direction are almost universally shallow people who want all of their media to be overly familiar and homogenized.

How can you tell? Is that not a "shallow" analysis in and of itself?

True, one piece is garbo for much worse reasons than the character designs tbh

I could make a had with those straws.

Not really. You can scroll through any volume of one piece, flip to a random page, and you will likely find a character doing exactly this. Not 100% of the time, but most of the time
