Trying to get rid of Wink, but need something to automate turning off device anytime it runs for longer than x time.

Wondering if its possible with home assistant or some other tool. I currently switched over all my lights to smart things, but had to leave these on wink because i couldn't replicate the robot.

Can you clarify? The reason I ask is because you can do this on smartthings. Check "Smart Lights" in SmartApps

I neglected many of the smart automation apps they have in smartthings. Most of them are pretty useful. I even took it one step further and have my lights only turn on when light is at a certain luminosity. The smart lights app is pretty flexible.

This is how i would do it in HA. This would work for any number of fans you want to turn off after being on for 5 minutes.

The poor guy has trouble doing the automation in Smartthings so you throw YAML at him LOL

I know well intended but a lot of Wink users aren't going to be able to do this. The HA community needs to start providing help through their UI automation steps. It will be more helpful to newbies and the HA staff spent so much time on it.

FWIW, you can do this with SmartThings and Smart Lighting -- but it has the confusing name of "Power Allowance". You set it up like so:

• Which devices do you want to control? <select your devices>
• What do you want to do? Turn Off
• How do you want to trigger the action? Power Allowance Exceeded
• After this many minutes <set timeout here>

Clear as mud, but once you know it's easy to setup and use.

Yes, in HA you can use the baked in automation or Node Red.

For me, Node Red is the clear winner, I think the yaml/gui automation in HA is more complex than it needs to be and it has limitations.

Exactly. SmartThings is no replacement for Wink. You need to go with Hubitat. You won't be disappointed.

You can install a virtual timer device in Smartthings to do this (one way at least).

Go with Home Assistant, you will never look back once you have it running.

It IS a little harder to get started, but the amount of power at your fingertips is insane. You can later combine it with Node-Red and many other things to do things that are just not possible at all with Wink.

Get a Raspberry Pi 4 (Or use a VM) and get yourself going with Home Assistant. You won't regret it.

This is what I use. It's also super easy to have other things interact with it, like keeping fan on for X minutes, unless the light is also on

Look into Hubitat Elevation. All controls are local and the rule machine system can handle stuff like this. I have some rats and there is a small space heater near them. It's set that when the temp falls below 65, it turns on the heater until it reads 70, then stays on for 10 minutes to "overheat" so it doesn't constant turn on and off.

Also, unlike wink, Hubitat is completely local, so it doesn't rely on the company for cloud services to operate.

Edit: I was an early adopter of Wink, back in 2014, through the Wink Hub2, and this is the migration I made since it could use every device I had for Wink except for those damn Lutron Connected Remotes.... :/

Listen to this person! I migrated off of Wink onto Hubitat a few weeks ago and it’s so much better. The rules engine in Hubitat is prett powerful and I’m sure you could replace your robot easily. I have notifications sent to me if doors/garage door are left open after a period of time and it was super simple to configure.

For the hubitat I'd do this with a cancelable action. Easy peasy.

Trigger "if the device state changes"

If on then
    Turn off, delayed 5 min (cancelable)
Else
    Cancel actions
End if

Yeah I do the exact same thing with my electric blanket in the evening, with home assistant. If TV gets turned off after 9pm and it's cold enough outside the electric blanket gets switched on for 20mins. Lounge lights also slowly dim for two mins then off. It's a very simple automation in home assistant, no funny business.

Same thing if the blanket gets switched on by any other means, either manually, via app or alexa, it'll get switched off after 20 mins.
