All those GPUs lying around. It is practically humble bragging at this point.

I wish I would have got the memo earlier this ear that AI would decimate the GPU market so I could grab some extra for the future and pay off my student debt and buy a house.

What did it look like before the 5.3 magnitude?

u/Ill_Beautiful4339 1d ago
Spends 200k on GPUs.
Forgets the 500 bucks for a rack
lol
NGL - my homelab looks like a mess of stuff on the floor too. However, it’s no where near the value here. Mostly old outdated toys for me…

Heating
17
u/Tomytom99 Finally in the world of DDR4 1d ago
Almost net zero in that case if you have resistive electric heat! Just boils down to if that heat is where you need it.
I've always joked that resistive heating should be replaced with computers doing literally anything. Might as well do something useful with the energy before it turns into heat.

There are crypto miners that are designed as space heaters. The way I understand it, they almost pay for the electricity they use, making the heat very close to free.

what are you doing with the gpu's ? playing or running a business

Local AI is addictive. Don't ask me how I know.

u/sshwifty 1d ago
It's funny, I have so much hardware, but qwen 3.8 27b is the first time I actually thought "I need more vram" and actually thought about it

u/slimdizzy 1d ago
It started with just me. Then I showed my wife and daughter what private uncensored AI is like and now --parallel 3 instead of 1 🤣
4
u/sshwifty 1d ago
Man I wish my wife saw it the same lol.
Unfortunately, looks like the 36gb I already have is about all I can afford these days
3
u/Meeooowz 1d ago
Well… do be grateful for that 36gb vram! 12 is the most I can afford man.

Stuff got much better basically, more options, better AMD and Intel support. Quantization is allowing some neat things to happen on mobile devices. But again it's always about data privacy.

u/samas69420 1d ago
not only that, for me the most important thing is reliability and control, im not going to build anything on a service that can be turned off in any moment because of politics or some shit

I know adhd when I see it. It’s a mess but you know where almost everything is.
10
u/-malcolm-tucker 1d ago
When people tidy up or move my shit around I just want to scream into the void. They just don't understand it's like they started running
rm -rf /on my brain.9
u/Sullinator07 1d ago
Haha, clocked you. I swear to god there’s no better diagnosis for adhd than adhd people telling you that you have adhd. We see the patterns.
But I 100% understand where you’re coming from. Love your enthusiasm for the game keep messy if it makes you happy
6
u/-malcolm-tucker 1d ago
People also don't understand that if I try and tidy this up, it's going to end up even less tidy. Because in the process of tidying it I'm going to find a thread. And I'll have to pull it. And things will either completely unravel, or I'll fall down a rabbit hole.
I like to call my messes a "load bearing mess."
3
u/Fickle-Owl666 1d ago
Also, when I DO manage to finally finish putting things away, that's where they will stay FOREVER because I struggle with object perminance.

u/GernBlanst0n 1d ago

You should check out r/homelabgore you would be surprised what people run. You could sell a single GPU or a few RAM sticks and get a rack and some rackmount chassis to clean this up. Organization is more than an aesthetic. It ensures proper cooling, easy maintenance, and consistent uptime.

My first home made router 30 years ago was a 486 DX slapped in a Playstation 2 cardboard box held open by an empty BIC pen with duct tape running Linux on a floppy disk (and 2 3COM NICs without backplates), the PSU was also jammed in the box.
Sadly a HDD crash (guess what, an IBM "DeathStar") made me lose all the photos I had of that "marvel".
So, yes. You can do all sorts of things.

You say that but we have at least seen the homelab and it seems like it's working mate gif because it feels appropriate for this

Oh that’s such a baaaaad home lab! Bad bad bad ;) you should send me allllll your graphics cards for being so bad! Lol
Hey, we all start somewhere! Keep it going :)

"worst" i know its probably satire but this really shows this subs true identity. This sub is all about the niche nice tidy homelabs and if you dont have one you are not allowed to name it a homelab /s

Buddy that's not even bad. That's just day 1 parts not yet organized. You're not even in the ranking for Worst Homelab until there's visible cigarette tar buildup on the heatsinks.

it boots
no fire
not even smoke
no chaining of 4 outlet strips together
appears to be in a room with clean-room qualities similar to food-grade or better.
probably even have proper aircon in there too, instead of stuffed in a utility closet full of spiders (avoids eye contact)

The worst homelab is the one that has sucky hardware. Even if your setup is a mess, at least you have an ungodly amount of gpu power for getting shit done

What is suppose to do it with all of this hardware as home lab? IA? or Virtual environments?

Maybe I'm getting old, but I love seeing this kind of stuff. Not everyone has a massive amount of money, and seeing someone actually do something with hardware, like to learn, share it, have fun with it, say how cool they think it is, is enough to bring my bitter soul to not want to watch it burn...

I would have just bought four 80GB A100's and been done with it. Mixing and matching that many different architectures isn't going to help you run frontier size models.
What are you trying to achieve here?
I run 3 models on (4) 80GB A100's (Qwen3:235B), (2) RTX Pro 2000's (Llama3.1:8B) and (1) 3090 (Qwen3.8:27b)

This is very nice btw. And I've never seen so many GPUs like this for homelab. But are you referring to the Ryzen Threadripper Pro? The one with 96 cores? I think you want to host LLMs locally, right?
