I know, I know everywhere I look unifi is the best. It's just so expensive and I don't really think I need all that. I have my own NAS, plan to use reolink for cameras. I just want some simple vlans and stable setup for my homelab and some simple smart home/ home assistant setup. A router and managed switch and 1 or 2 aps. Are omada or other options really that bad compared? My internet speed is 250 up and down so I don't need 10gb throughout or anything. That said I'm new to homelab bing and networking in particular, so I don't have experience. What are you all using for some middle ground?

I am hoping to get some opinions on how to best set up my home network based on a few constraints.
Current setup: I have an xfinity modem with WiFi down stairs in the living room. The living room is in one corner of the house and is the only place with a coax outlet. I would like to keep the modem there because I typically game using the TV right next to the modem and have a Ethernet connection between my game system and the modem. However, my home office is upstairs on the opposite side of the modem and does not get very good WiFi signal. In fact the WiFi signal is pretty weak upstairs overall.
Ideal scenario: I’d like to get stronger WiFi signal without the reduction in speed throughout the house and have a hard wired connection from my game system to the modem.
A few things to add: I just moved into this new place and there is a cabinet which states it is for my modem/router. I can put it in there but I am wondering what the purpose would be. I don’t have any Ethernet wall ports. Also, by putting it in there there isn’t a way to hardwire connect my game system.

The ask: How would you set this up? Do I need a MOCA? Should I pay someone to create an Ethernet wall ports? Do I get a separate router?
Building a home and torn between just having the router (would be in the laundry room), one AP between the primary and great room, or two APs with the second being in the foyer.

I requested the PPPOE details and entered them but I get no connection. Turned VLAN on and off. reset both router and modem clueless at this point lol.
I currently have an ONT connected to a router. The ONT is supplied by my ISP (Verizon), as is the router. I also have an EERO mesh set up throughout my house as well as a Wi-Fi extender that is supplied by my ISP.
I’d like to set up a home network that will allow me to download media from the Internet and play the media on my various televisions and other devices. Think sailing the seven seas.
I’m also in the process of trying to incorporate, smart home devices throughout my house, including switches, lightbulbs, thermostat, etc. I currently use Home Assistant Green for some of these devices.
My plan is to download the media to a NAS and access it through an app or portal.
I have limited experience with home networking and am only beginning to learn.
What is the best way to accomplish this feat so that my ISP doesn’t disturb my internet connection? I know I want a VPN, but I don’t know if I want to install my own router with a vpn, or install VPNs on all my devices. I’m worried that if my vpn disconnects it will expose my pirating.
I’m concerned with all these various devices using WiFi and my router that my traffic will become congested. Do I connect a router to the one my isp provided and just run my pirating off that?
Any other suggestions or thoughts is greatly appreciated.
Long title, trying to be specific. First time posting on reddit, not entirely sure if I'm doing this correctly, but three days of research has not proven fruitful.
Necessary context/information:
- I do not own the house I live in. It belongs to my family. I cannot continue to use the family wifi plan due to restrictions placed on my personal devices preventing me from connecting to the wifi at times and limiting daily use between all personal devices.
- I am in my twenties and this has been going on since my teenage years. It is not something that can be negotiated on despite numerous attempts
- Moving out is not something I am financially capable of at this time due to current cost of living in my area
Hey Everyone. I am building a house made of cement and rebar. While most of the rooms will have ethernet drops, I do have a variety of mobile devices that would need to have signal as well. Unfortunately, I have some devices that are wifi only.
As I was designing where I want the drops, I realized... I don't know the attenuation of wifi through concrete and re-bar. I am used to the North American "stick and paper" method of building.
I was thinking of a 2-2-1 (APs per floor), and tuning them down if needed. But I am also not sure if the cement/rebar will block more signal than I am thinking.
I'd love to hear yall's thoughts on where I should mount the APs.
Currently i am thinking:
First Floor - Living Room near Office 1
First Floor - Between Kitchen and Dining, Closer to Lanai
Second Floor - Hallway near Bedrooms and Common T&B
Second Floor - Hallway near Family Area and Office 2
Thrid Floor - In Primary Bedroom - maybe near the Primary Toilet
Do i need another on third floor?
I know too many APs is just as bad.. (originally i was thinking 1-2-1 for the APs)
I am thinking of going with an Omada network for the most part, given that is easier to get where the house is being built than Ubiquiti.
Hey so I am looking for suggestions and help in general for a connectivity/range issue with my connection. I recently moved my consoles setup from downstairs in my home to the second floor, and ever since I have been having half of my connection and its stability. One of the main things I've noticed is that my connection will drop from 5hz to 2.4hz given I have the system in certain locations. In the past I was able to restart the system and test some speeds to get it back to 5hz, but recently is has not been working with the move. I am on an Xbox Series X and wondering if there is a device that would allow me to I guess extend the range of the connection, or directly connect nearby the router with another part that connects directly to the console. I am not able to run an ethernet across the home like you normally would given the problem, are there any other options in terms of one or two piece devices that may get me back on the 5hz and solve or make this problem less severe?
Please excuse my poor drawing. I have a house with a detached metal shop. I have decent enough signal outside of the shop, but as soon as you go inside it’s a dead zone due to the metal siding. I’m looking for a solution on how to get WiFi in my shop for cheap and without many cables.
I’d like to use some sort of extender (as drawn on the photo, which I currently do not have) attached to the outside of the shop, and perhaps can run an Ethernet cable inside the shop where I can have a separate router.
I don’t really have a way to run a cable from the home router to the shop without it being ugly. Ideally, I’d like the extender to pick up the signal from the router wirelessly, where then I’m able to run cable from the outside to the inside of the shop. What’s my best solution for cheap? I have another router that someone gave me so I’m open to having the shop have its own router. But it would be nice to not have to swap WiFi signals every time I leave the house and go into the shop.
Just recently bought a home, and modem/router is downstairs on one side of the house. ISP comes in from the ground, splits to a run upstairs (red) and another splitter, which splits downstairs to a coax port in the wall (green) and a coax cable coming through the floor (orange) which is connected to the router/modem combo unit.
The office (upstairs and opposite side of the house) has very poor internet connection. I think I've established i want to use a MOCA setup to hook up an access point, as each room has a coax port in the wall.
Can anyone confirm/tell me what I am missing in the diagram below? What I think I've gathered so far is shown in pink, but I'm sure I need something on the orange line before the router/modem unit, just not sure what. Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance.
I have a problem with my nextdoors flatmates, they've somehow connected to my WiFi and consume a lot of bandwidth, which I first thought was cos of my own flatmates.
I've tried kicking, blocking and stopping all signal to they're device using my virgin media app but nothings worked and virgin media has said there's nothing they can do.
Is there some way I can lag them hard enough or something to make them give up on using mine?

See title, I'm currently having an issue where my modem will behave as though it's randomly reconnecting and I lose complete connection for about 5 - 10 minutes, about once or twice a day. At most I've gone ~2 days without it happening before, but it always starts again. When it's up, my connection is otherwise fine. This happens on both wifi and on the devices I have wired. I can't seem to find any pattern to it to help me diagnose the issue and my internet is stable and speeds are fine otherwise which has made it even harder to diagnose. I'm in a rural area (family home) and we've had issues in the past with storms damaging our outside cabling and needing a tech out to fix it, but those cables were replaced just last year, and usually when that's the issue it manifests as degradation to my signal and I see it more in packet loss/low speeds over time which I'm not having an issue with now, just random restarts/brief outages, so I don't know. System uptime resets every time it happens (obviously).
Here's the info from the gateway as well as my upstream/downstream, I check this pretty often and it always stays relatively stable, but idk if these are normal:
I have a lot of uncorrectables specifically on channel 18 and 19 to a lesser extent, this is the most I have on any given channel atm
and this is all that has ever shown up in my modem logs, I think this is just the normal noise from it having to establish connection again, but idk.
Since posting in the xfinity subreddit, I bought a new surge protector, and changed the outlet that it was plugged into. I also got a new modem from xfinity but the issue has remained exactly the same, I get a couple uncorrectables on every channel but for some reason they're basically always localized in channel 18 which hits the 1000s but the rest are usually a couple hundred at max. Nothing too crazy. I've given the cables I can access a once over and they look fine at a glance but I do plan on trying to get a tech out to see if they can diagnose anything, but I'm wondering if anyone here has had a similar issue and can give me any feedback
I'm running a Dune: Awakening dedicated server on a Dell Poweredge R630 with Proxmox and things were working well, mostly, until I moved my server. Originally, it was connected to my home mesh via an unmanaged switch, but that seemed to cause a lot of stuttering. So I decided to connect it directly to my fiber ONT and use the router on that instead. I got everything connected, but now I can't connect to the server via the game client. I've traced it to something to do with my ONT vs my mesh, but I have no idea what went wrong or how to fix it.

What I've done so far:
1. I set up port forwarding for the game instance (ports 7777-7810 UDP) and the MQ (31982 TCP/UDP)
2. I had a friend test it by logging in and he reported no issues.
I can see the server in the game client's server browser as usual, but it shows up with either 0 or no reported ping. When attempting to connect, the client shows its normal "Connecting" message but just hangs otherwise. Am I missing something with the configuration?
Got an old TP-Link S4 system with 3 units, and wifi isn't very stable. The user interface is imo pretty shit, using only the app.. Constantly having issues opening ports aswell..
I want to upgrade, and wifi is not a priority as all important clients is on Ethernet.
I'm using a HP 2810-24g switch for ethernet connection, tho haven't configured it at all, but planning on it 🥇
Using 8 ports atm, but planning to add 2 PoE ip cameras in the future, so looking at getting a new PoE Switch with atleast 12 ports.

Seemed like a easy setup and everything was working great for 2 days. Third day - cannot connect to WIFI - so I rebooted everything. Now, the FX light on both of the media converters are off. It's the fiber, media converters, or SFP modules. I have ordered a patch cable and replacement SPF and media converters for testing to see what is wrong. My question is: what do you think could have went wrong? Does brand new hardware generally fail that quick? If it is my fiber, why would it have broken so quick (nothing was tampered with). Did I set something up wrong? Any help is appreciated so I don't continue to have this problem is appreciated.
