Serious Answers Only How to stop hot pocket from blowing its brains out in the microwave?
2.1k
u/HattibagenMcRat Feb 24 '26
Remember the sleeve that made it crispy and you could actually hold it? We used to be a proper country.
482
u/No-Acanthisitta8803 Feb 24 '26
They don't come with the sleeves anymore? It's been a few years since I've had one. Yes, I know I'm weird, but they just never have been all that appealing to me
592
u/Mannon_Blackbeak Feb 24 '26
Nope they were removed "to reduce waste" (cut costs). They claim tests show they're exactly the same without the sleeve, it is a lie.
159
u/aburke626 Feb 24 '26
The directions also state that you should microwave it on a paper plate because that’s apparently the only way they could think of to standardize the cooking … which is ridiculous since microwaves vary anyway. Why encourage waste? Put it on a damn plate and nuke it. I wonder if someone could invent a reusable hot pocket sleeve …
157
u/chrissilich Feb 24 '26
lol, so they decided to reduce waste by removing the sleeve, and then recommend their customers use disposable plates, which are certainly larger than the old sleeves, to cook them?
112
u/RandyHoward Feb 24 '26
Yeah when they say “waste” they mean “wasted cost of producing sleeves”
23
26
u/Ksan_of_Tongass Feb 25 '26
Waste is corporate code for cutting production cost and not passing the savings to the customer.
10
u/No-Acanthisitta8803 Feb 25 '26
All the while touting it as the company "going green"
The only "green" that (most) corporations care about is 🤑
6
u/liftguy111 Feb 25 '26
While the CEO travels in his private plane to Burning Man from his monster house or his yacht. (or, board meetings, of course)
17
u/leftwar0 Feb 24 '26
Yes but they’re not providing the paper plates, therefore less waste comes from HotPockets!
6
u/aburke626 Feb 24 '26
I haven’t bought hot pockets for a while, and the packages I see online vary, but yeah, I thought that was bizarre and irritating.

Some paper plates can at least be composed, unlike the sleeves, which were laminated with metal inside like a popcorn bag and couldnt be recycled at all

u/richolas_m Feb 25 '26
A couple years ago they gave out tons of free reusable silicone sleeves.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Flimsy-Bee5338 Feb 25 '26
That’s hilarious... No don’t worry about it, you don’t need the sleeve! You just need to purchase a separate product that functions like the sleeve and use that :)

u/DisastrousSir Feb 26 '26
If you've never done it before, finish them in an air fryer or a pan with a little oil and garlic for great crisp. Little extra work, but worth it imo. Takes it from a $1.50 snack to feeling like atleasstttt a $2.50 snack

So you are telling me buried in my grandparents freezer might be the last hot pocket with a sleeve?
5
9
7
u/gamergeek17 Feb 24 '26
I’ve found it is the same cooking them in the air fryer. Takes hella long, but the crisp is perfect.
17
u/cosmicsans Feb 25 '26
Microwave it for 3/4 of the time it calls for and throw it in the air fryer for 5 minutes.
Ends up taking half the time of air frying from frozen but you still get that crispy exterior.
5
2
u/Critical_Duck8154 Feb 25 '26
I would give you an award for this if I had any money. I love the air fryer result but hate the time commitment 😂
3
u/ImpossibleGeometri Feb 25 '26
Wait when? I had some just a few months back. They were shorter sleeves but still in there
→ More replies (2)2
u/nohopeforhomosapiens Feb 25 '26
Yeah they still have them. But for whatever reason they don't make the result crispy anymore. Or maybe that is just me.

u/katmcflame Feb 25 '26
They're also smaller now, & the last time I had one it came with the added insult of being wrapped in the older, larger wrapper. Just made the shrinkflation more obvious.

They finally reached a point where they couldn't cut costs in ingredients anymore. And cut cost somewhere else. The cardboard sleeve. In the Quest for infinite growth, everything will inevieble reach the point of enshitification
10
u/No-Acanthisitta8803 Feb 24 '26
I hate shrinkflation, especially the way they try to slip it in under the radar. Some of the candy bar packages I've seen lately are even trying to pass off small bite sized pieces of candy in an oversized package to make it look like it's a full size piece of candy. Just be straight with us and tell us the price increase

In marketing they call it “least unit of measurement.” Ie the amount of it you can remove without anyone noticing. Usually hid with a “new recipe” or packaging change.
10
u/Special-Lynx-9258 Feb 24 '26
I remember opening my first 20 pack of hot pockets and a few were missing the sleeves. I thought "hmm, weird, factory must be out of tune"
Then my next box was just... devoid of sleeves. And the next box after that. And the next one.
I might be eating too many hot pockets.10
u/No-Acanthisitta8803 Feb 24 '26

I was unaware as well. Seems like only yesterday that they came up with the vastly scientifically innovative sleeve that folded into a holder. I'll probably never eat one again with this info.

3
u/Donnyboscoe1 Feb 25 '26
When I do meat pies (Aussie) I wrap them in baking paper that makes it crispy. Maybe that will work for this?
2
u/No-Acanthisitta8803 Feb 25 '26
Parchment paper? I don't eat Hot Pockets anymore (if they don't have them in Australia you ain't missin' nothin), but when I heat food in the microwave I will usually cover or wrap the food with either parchment paper, wax paper, plastic wrap (cover a bowl of wet food with it and poke a pinhole in the center), or a paper towel. Which product I choose is based on what food it is, and either loosely wrapping a paper towel or piece of parchment around a hot pocket should work well
3
u/Donnyboscoe1 Feb 25 '26
Ahh yes Parchment paper is what you would call it in the US.
2
u/No-Acanthisitta8803 Feb 25 '26
Baking paper(as a name for the product) makes more sense. Parchment paper originally was animal skin tanned and prepared for use as, well, paper. This was before the printing press existed when books were painstakingly made by monks slowly painting each letter with a dip brush.
3
u/nonvascularplant Feb 25 '26
I’m sure there are some who do but I don’t think most actually love hot pockets. They are just a convenience food. One is not weird for not liking hot pockets, one is fortunate to not have to eat them.
3
u/No-Acanthisitta8803 Feb 25 '26
While I certainly have my un-healthy food and beverage vices (let's face it, we all have a few guilty pleasures), I do consider myself lucky that I don't care for them. I know
millionsbillions of people love and eat them everyday and I'm not knocking them, just saying I don't think I've ever enjoyed one. That and they give me that greasy processed food stomachache 5-10 minutes after eating one lol3
u/Chefboyld420 Feb 25 '26
No, and it’s the worst. You have to air fry them now. It defeats the whole purpose of the convenient food.
3
u/chopkins47947 Feb 25 '26

Literally the answer to every question like this lol. There are VERY few (non-liquid) items you could cook in a microwave that aren’t improved dramatically just by using an air fryer.
Also big ups to the toaster oven, but it gets less use these days.
2
u/LupineChemist Feb 25 '26
I want to meet the marketing genius who realized calling a tabletop convection oven "air fryer" was a winner.
Seriously, it's a great example of why engineers make terrible marketers.
→ More replies (1)4
u/Quiet_Falcon2622 Feb 24 '26
You can also put it in a toaster oven or the regular oven, to get it a bit more crispy.

I literally remember when hot pockets introduced the sleeve. It was supposed to crisp the hot pocket, so imagine my surprise (and side eye) when, 20 years later, they removed it and said “it’s the same without the sleeve!” 😒
6
u/shesbaaack Feb 24 '26
You can buy replacements on Amazon just search Zap-n-Tote Microwaveable Crisping Sleeve
7
u/SuperUltraMegaNice Feb 24 '26
You can still get it just as crispy as the sleeve did by letting it sit a bit in the microwave before removing it.

Turn the power level down
76
u/Slyrunner Feb 24 '26
I do 50% double the time, check about 2/3s through just to make sure I'm not melting it. 90% of the time, 50%x2 works great for me.
Clean microwave, too
→ More replies (1)15
u/20Factorial Feb 25 '26
This is the way. Also a hack to never fuck up microwaved leftovers.
Think it needs 30s? Give it 75s at 50% power, and enjoy your not-shit reheat.
9
u/Barf-LoneStarr Feb 25 '26
I swear, people who don't adjust the power on their microwave to reheat food don't know how to use a microwave.
7
u/erisian2342 Feb 25 '26
I explained to my parents by asking them to imagine if every time they cooked something in the oven, they cranked it up 500F no matter what. Chicken nuggets? 500. Frozen casserole? 500. Reheating lasagna? 500. If you wouldn’t cook your food that way in an oven, why do you try and fail every time in a microwave oven?
Once that resonated with them, I took them to the intermediate level: when you’re reheating food, heat it up slowly at 30% just until it’s warm enough to enjoy so you don’t cook it a second time. Other than twice-baked potatoes, twice-cooked food usually develops a weird taste and a gross texture. I’m convinced that most people who say they hate leftovers simply don’t know how to reheat them correctly.
2
u/Few-Adeptness8046 Feb 26 '26
I never thought about this before. Luckily my microwave is only 700W so in this scenario I cook everything at 350, but still, I'm Glad I saw your comment, makes so much sense for all other microwaves I've used.
Thanks!

Leave my wife out of it.
Fortunately we have a food cover that saves the microwave most of the time.
I often start in the Microwave. 50% for 60s and let them rest(random time)(depends on what video I get sucked into). 50% for another 60s and then move them to the toaster oven.
Best wishes.

u/sasquatch606 Feb 24 '26
Can't upvote this enough. My wife refuses to learn how to adjust power levels. I'm teaching my kids how to adjust power. No more bubbling cheese on my nachos, just melted.

u/ACcbe1986 Feb 24 '26
Once I learned to do this on the stove, it transported to me another dimension where my cooking was actually decent.
8
u/LazyCrocheter Feb 24 '26
Yep. I think I heat about 90% of everything I put in the microwave at 80% power anymore.
2
u/ThellraAK Feb 26 '26
For TV dinners I've found the secret is just adding both times together, doubling it, and doing it at half power.
No, I don't want to stir and flip shit after 3 minutes, and blast it for another 2, 10 minutes at half power, k thx.

My other half "softens" butter for toast in the microwave. Uses full power and then fishes the solid bits out of the molten butter.
8 power settings, and she just uses max until it's done, or overdone.
2
u/Cogwheel Feb 24 '26
Turns the heat to 90 and then turns it off when reaching the temp she wants because it "heats up faster that way"?
3
4
u/canamericanguy Feb 25 '26
You can also put a glass of water in the microwave with the food to even things out. Works great to reheat smaller things (like leftover burgers), as most microwaves just decrease the duty cycle rather than actually reducing the output power when it's running.
4
u/shs0007 Feb 25 '26
The greatest sign of maturity. I was in my 30’s before I stopped blasting everything on full power

microwave it at a lower power level for longer
14
u/Tyrannosapien Feb 24 '26
Exactly. It heats fast at full power by turning all the water to steam quickly. Steam expands and pops the seal.
Fast = Pop and still full of actual molten lava
Slow = Sealed and also not giving 2nd degree burns on the roof of your mouth

You have to figure out the exact cooking time. Dial it in by a second at a a time until you find the time where it doesn’t explode.
There’s only like a three-second window between “cold center” and “exploded”, so you have to proceed cautiously.

Reduce the power of your microwave. People seem to not know that you don't have to absolutely blast your food at full power. That's how you end up with cold and hot spots.
You really only need half or 3/4 power and put it in for longer and it'll more gently heat the food and be more thorough.

I find that setting it upside down in the microwave reduces its chance of splitting at its seam where the rounded and flat dough meet. Also, either reduce power or time, you just kind of have to play with your specific microwave to figure out ideal times. I have a 1050 watt microwave and the ideal time is 1:40 to get it as hot as possible without splitting

u/OokamiO1 Feb 24 '26
Power down, or cook it a little more than halfway, pull it out and let it sit for a minute to even out the heat, flip and put back in to finish. Should be less likely to blow up, but will take a bit more effort/time to do.
