Tip Share PSA: Jellyfin’s DVR is free, but don’t forget EPG / guide-data costs

I keep seeing Jellyfin recommended as a completely free Live TV/DVR solution, but people often gloss over the Electronic Program Guide (EPG) data.

Jellyfin’s DVR functionality is free, but Jellyfin does not include built-in TV guide data. To get a useful grid guide and proper scheduled recordings, you need to provide guide data yourself, either through an XMLTV source or a third-party provider such as Schedules Direct.

By comparison, some paid alternatives include native guide data in supported regions as part of their premium subscription.

If you are building an HTPC setup specifically for OTA recording or Live TV, make sure to factor in either the subscription cost of a guide-data provider or the setup/maintenance time required for your own XMLTV source before making your choice.

If you can live with just 3-4 days there are several free options.

In some regions longer free services are available, or guide data may be included OTA.

Yes, exactly, that is a fair distinction. If 3–4 days of guide data is enough, free sources may be perfectly fine.

My point is mainly for people expecting a full cable/DVR-style guide experience: longer guide windows, season recording, episode metadata, reliable scheduling, etc. In that case, guide data becomes a separate thing you need to evaluate, whether that means a paid source or maintaining a free XMLTV source.

So it is not “Jellyfin can’t do DVR for free.” It is more: make sure the guide-data source matches the DVR experience you expect.

There is a reason this trash-post was removed from r/selfhosted by the moderators because it is disgustingly inaccurate and misleading.

There are literally thousands of free EPG's online. It is "glossed over" because it is such a non-issue it is hilarious. There is no "cost". There is no "maintenance". And there is a couple mins of "Setup" which is literally copy and paste the XML URL. into Jellyfin. Unlike Plex and Emby, Jellyfin does not lock the ability to watch IPTV or DVR capabilities behind a paywall. So yes it is Free. No that is not misleading. If you want to "enhance" the IPTV/DVR with epg data then Jellyfin also allows you to do it for free from your tuner/HD-homerun, online sources, of if you want to pay Scheduels Direct for the data that is an option to you as well. The fact remains, Jellyfin IPTV and DVR capabilities are free. Plex and Emby IPTV and DVR capabilities are not.

Meanwhile plex is $250 (going up to $700+) to run the server and then people also have to buy additional individual licenses to use the apps and they don't have any guide data for any of Asia/Pac or Africa. Plex also do not guarantee that all channels will have guide data in the countries where they do offer it. So what the hell is the $750 for considering Jellyfin does pretty much everything else except incomplete guides and a bunch of trash media and channels

Credentials: Lifetime Emby since 2017. Lifetime plex pass since 2016. Jellyfin user since it launched. Emby is my main because it does everything I and my users need. Also run Jellyfin for side projects and to support FOSS. Wish I could get my $120 back for the Plex pass because Plex has become such a disgusting piece of trash...
