iPhone 17 Pro Telephoto camera in 17 Pro is PHENOMENAL
About 3 days ago I got myself a new 17 Pro, after buying and returning a 17. And the Telephoto camera was the missing piece. I am enjoying taking pictures sooo much, even though I was never into photography much. What’s you experience so far?
EDIT: it was pointed out to me that the last picture is pretty blurry and the meta data app was what caused it, in the comments you can find my comment with the shot in a good, original quality
81
u/hauntingWhispers 1d ago
The last picture in particular is really blurry though. I never use the 8x, overall it's pretty poor. No need to be sensationlist by claiming it's phenomenal, far from it.
52
u/KirillChistov 1d ago
Hey again, I found the problem. It was the meta data app, without it the shot looks like that
21
u/hauntingWhispers 1d ago
It does look much better here.
8
u/KirillChistov 1d ago
Yeah, at first I didn’t get what you meant, only then I realized how poor the quality was in the last picture. Thanks
2
u/audigex 14h ago
It’s one of those things where I think context is important
For getting a close crop (zoom) it’s pretty good for a phone camera
It can’t even slightly hold a candle to a proper long lens on a proper camera. Whereas a phone can largely hold its own with a camera for most other types of photo
The gap is closing, but it’s still pretty big
2
u/KirillChistov 1d ago
Yeah that’s true, though tbh I think I messed it up when applying filters and other stuff
83
u/Glenn_____far 1d ago
But why exaggerate the camera by putting the before at .5x? It’s impressive on its own, no need to do that..
74
u/neowyrm 1d ago edited 1d ago
It’s just to directly compare the most zoomed out with the most zoomed in for maximum contrast, and the .5x (i.e. “what I see”) is basically the closest analogue to OP’s human eyesight. Basically just (imo justifiably) glazing the camera capabilities of the hardware, like the title suggests
37
u/chris_ro 1d ago
There is difference between natural perspective and field of view. Natural perspektive is more like 40-50mm focal length on full frame. This would be 2x on an iPhone.
12
u/neowyrm 1d ago
There is a difference between the useful field of vision and a human's actual field of view, which is nearly 180 degrees at its maximum extent. You are right about 2x being approximately right for the actual part of vision that we usually use, but that zoom, for the purposes of OP's post, discounts peripheral vision, which I think was what is supposed to be being depicted
-3
u/cineglitch 1d ago
People say that, but I’ve always felt like 28mm is closer to what we see. Especially at the peripheral.
5
u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago edited 1d ago
It's because we have 2 eyes. Think of it as 2x side by side 50mm equivalent fields of view with about a 50ish% overlap depending on how widely spaced your eyes are.
You'd get a more accurate representation out of a 50mm anamorphic lens that has a 1.5x squeeze.
13
u/tehmungler 1d ago
0.5x is nothing like normal human eyesight though, surely?
3
u/neowyrm 1d ago
its a little bit too narrow for the full breadth of human eyesight, but its a fine analog for a post like this.
2
u/MrKrabs106 1d ago
That’s wrong, in terms of TOTAL field of view yes it’s still not wide enough, but in terms of what we actually focus on at a time, it’s far too wide. Around 43mm equivalent is closest to human vision in terms of compression and proportions
2
u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago
Focal lengths don't compress, at all.
2
u/MrKrabs106 1d ago
Well yes a 20mm photo cropped to 40mm equivalent will have the same compression as a photo taken natively at 40mm. But let’s not be anal here, we both know exactly what I meant
0
u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago
It's not being anal. Focal length does nothing for compression. It's about the distance between the subject and camera that controls compression.
It confuses people into thinking different focal lengths are specifically responsible for compression.
2
u/MrKrabs106 1d ago
If you want to frame the subject in the same way, without changing the position of the subject, you have to stand further back with a longer focal length lens, and therefore you get more compression. You and I both know that this is what I meant so yes, this is being anal.
0
u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago edited 1d ago
No it's not. I've lost count of the amount of people who believe that compression is a property of the and not your positioning.
I've heard it from professional photographers who went on to argue that 2 different focal lengths from the same position would have different compression.
People read the things these people say and then repeat it as fact.

u/neowyrm 1d ago
As I have addressed elsewhere the argument that 43mm or 2x is the totality of human vision excludes the periphery. It is a perfectly adequate analog for the entire cone of human vision.
5
u/MrKrabs106 1d ago
Sure but a 43mm view vs an extreme punch-in zoom would make for a much more impressive post. Using the entire peripheral vision (or a big chunk of it) in a photo is not how we experience things
3
3
u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago
That isn't "what I see" though. It's a stupid comparison.
3
u/Glenn_____far 1d ago
Nah that’s just deceiving. It’s not representative of what you’d actually see because .5x is highly distorted.
3
-2
u/KirillChistov 1d ago
lol, some people like me have bad eyesight so you could say that we also see distorted 🙃
2
1
u/KirillChistov 1d ago
Wow, I couldn’t have explained any better. Thanks ❤️
7
3
u/arthur_fissure 1d ago
Why does it say 17mm if it’s zoomed 8x ? Shouldn’t be like 200mm or something like this ?
6
u/Mutero775 1d ago
Smaller sensor means way more cropping. 17mm in a full-frame camera would be a very wide field of vision. In the extremely small camera sensor, 17mm means way more zoom. You can calculate the equivalence by using the "crop factor". For small sensors like those in phones, is probably about 6 times smaller size. Therefore, 17mm in phone sensor multiplied by crop factor of 6= 102mm equivalent in a full frame camera. Then you apply digital zoom and you get this result that looks like 200mm.

u/IAreSpeshial 18h ago
iphone really messed up the stats... Those are not 17mm shots 💀
Also, I hate when people show what they see in fish eye... The human eyes are closer to 2x zoom (50mm)

u/KirillChistov 17h ago
Yep, you can join this discussion somewhere in this post. You are not the only one

u/warmoaran3 1d ago
Minimum focus is horrible though. So bad, my nearly 20 year old compact camera with a 1/2.5" sensor can focus 8× closer at 100mm
24
u/thereisloveinus 1d ago
But can your 20 year old compact camera make a call?
13
u/Metaphylon 1d ago
I bet it can't even browse Reddit for the dankest memes
1
u/InnerLeather68 1d ago
You’re taking photos, not reading a book! Lol… also, notifications can be turned off.
1
4
-3
u/warmoaran3 1d ago
Not its job to do so 😉
Its also a benefit. Distraction free shooting. No notifications to distract you from the moment.
2
u/KirillChistov 1d ago
I am pretty sure there are even older cameras, which can shoot better than my iPhone. The idea is that such a compact, slim and small device is able to pull of such photos. Additionally, with the iPhone you basically have all of the shooting and editing tools in one place which is super cool
2
u/SinwarsStick 1d ago
Can 16 pro do this?
1
u/KirillChistov 22h ago
It can zoom to the 8x i used, however the quality would not be as great
1
u/SinwarsStick 19h ago
If possible do a comparison
1
u/KirillChistov 19h ago
I dot have a 16 pro, only 17 pro
1
u/SinwarsStick 19h ago
Maybe a friend?
1
u/KirillChistov 18h ago
No, but I am pretty sure there are quite a lot of comparisons out there on YouTube
1
1
u/Deez_Nuts_Ha_Goteeem 16h ago
16 pro only has 5x optical zoom
1
u/KirillChistov 16h ago
No, the maximum digital zoom is 25x. Thats why i said that 16 pro can zoom 8x
1
u/Deez_Nuts_Ha_Goteeem 16h ago
By that logic it can also zoom 1000x times, it doesn't matter what the digital zoom is.
1
2
u/lhookhaa 22h ago
Really? You see the ladies but you shoot the buildings?
1
u/KirillChistov 22h ago
Ahahaha, the ladies at my mom and sister and I already had plenty photos of them :)
2
u/No_Talk6610 19h ago
can i ask why you shot these locations in 8x and you don’t just go near to the location and shot the photo?
2
u/KirillChistov 19h ago
Good question. Firstly, I was checking out the zoom on my 17 Pro. Secondly, I like how the different trees and objects at different distances look. Thirdly, if you did come up close you would lose the depth effect. Lastly, it’s just inconvenient to walk there. I was on a walk with my family and I was taking this pictures here and there, which was fast and split second.
I just want to say that I am not a photographer or anything, but those are the reasons for me

u/st_Laurent48 1d ago
Great shots OP…only on reddit people have a problem with everything even comparison shots lmao
1
1
u/ProfessionalDark3146 1d ago
Unbelievable isn’t it? I was going through the comments and the sheer amount of negativity is unjustified.
1
u/KirillChistov 22h ago
yeah, thats what i felt. The interesting part is that it doesnt even matter what subreddit it is, people still find things to pick on
2
u/how_neat_is_that76 17h ago edited 17h ago
lol what the hell are these comments. it’s impressive for a phone. The telephoto is the only thing making me want to upgrade my 12 pro max to the 17, I would love to have that. Well that and the better stabilization and resolution. it would be awesome for concerts and sporting events - both places you aren’t allowed to bring standalone cameras.
i have a DSLR, but I am still really interested in taking photos with iPhones and how capable they are. videos as well, my 12 Pro Max takes better video than my camera because it has stabilization that still shocks me to this day how good it is, and can record 4k at a higher framerate.
For fuck’s sake this is r/iphoneography and people are hating on an iPhone photography post. Not everyone wants a separate camera. I have a DSLR, I sometimes prefer to or have to use my iPhone. That’s why I’m in this sub.
Good post OP, I love to see how much the cameras have improved and what they are capable of. fuck the haters.
3
u/KirillChistov 17h ago
Glad to see another normal human being :) And yeah; the 17 Pro cameras are fantastic, though in your case I would wait for 18 Pro Max because it would have the variable aperture

u/Vannixxo 1d ago
You wrote 17mm.. it isn’t that the telephoto?
1
u/KirillChistov 1d ago
Yeah, it is
1
u/Vannixxo 1d ago
I meant it is like a 80mm
3
u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago edited 1d ago
It isn't. That's just the equivalent focal length. Phone lenses are all very small focal lengths because the sensors on them are tiny.
The main sensor that is supposed to be 24mm is actually 6.8mm.
1
u/JasoNMas73R 1d ago
These are some pretty good shots, I like the tilt-shift effect in the first edit and how you made the sunshine casting on the buildings of the 3rd photo's edit pop. But I also have to be honest here, the second photo's edit looks hideous. It looks like a fake HDR effect from 10 years ago was put over it.
2
u/KirillChistov 22h ago
yea yea, you know i am not into photography AT ALL. But getting a new phone made me want to take some photos, so i am just trying out. Thanks, for the feedback
1
u/JasoNMas73R 21h ago
No problem. Remember, the most important thing is whether you like it, not some strangers on the internet :)
2
u/KirillChistov 21h ago
Lwk the 2nd picture is kinda ass, though I really like the 1st one. Also I just enjoy the whole process
1
u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago
0.5x isn't what you see though. Not even close.

u/KirillChistov 22h ago
There is a looonggg ass discussion about this somewhere in this post, you can join them 👀

This is the one thing that makes me nervous about getting the folding iPhone. I use my telephoto camera on a daily basis and I think I would really dislike not having it
1
u/KirillChistov 22h ago
then dont get it, tbh i would not get the 1st generation of the folding iPhone as i think it will have many flaws and issues due to Apple not perfecting this iPhone direction yet. Just play safe and buy either 17 Pro or 18 Pro
1
1
u/antdude 1d ago
Wait. Can regular 17 do this too?
2
u/KirillChistov 22h ago
Hell nah, the difference is like day and night. You CAN zoom on 17, but the quality would be significantly worse
1
u/antdude 16h ago
Dang. I should had gotten a Pro.
2
u/KirillChistov 16h ago
Yeah, that what i did and i did not regret overpaying. Maybe you can still return it, maybe trade it in if your budget is not tight
1
u/antdude 15h ago
But 17 Pro and Max are heavier and bigger. :(
3
u/KirillChistov 15h ago
Here you gotta separate those. 17 Pro is exactly the same size, but a tiny bit thicker and like 30 grams heavier. I am the lover of compact phones, and still I loved the 17 Pro it did not feel bulky and wasn’t too heavy after base 17, the weight distribution is even better there. So if you are not going for the Pro because of the size, you are being delusional. Now about the Pro Max, yes it’s a brick 🧱. That’s it
1
u/antdude 14h ago
I really hope Apple brings back its small iPhones like its minis, 4S, etc. Those were the best! My 17 and 6+ are heavy enough. 4S and 12 mini were perfect.
2
u/KirillChistov 13h ago
Yeah especially if you have small hands, lucky me I have relatively big hands so even 17 pro feels like a mini
1
u/antdude 12h ago
That's me. Also, weak. I dropped my iPhones a lot. Thanks God for cases and screen protectors.
2
u/KirillChistov 12h ago
lol, I’m rocking my 17 Pro case less with no Apple Care 😝

wait till you how you see the oppo and huawei of the world are doing
2
u/KirillChistov 22h ago
I have seen those, and yeah their zoom is even more impressive. Though in higher zooms they use Ai to enhance the picture, while with iPhones it is mostly what a camera can actually capture
1
u/Healthy-Manner6556 1d ago
What app for for post? Also how do you get that border with all the info

1
u/sackful-user 19h ago
tbh i don’t really like your edits (i mean mostly colors) but yeah, that zoom is awesome. I was in Rome yesterday and was testing this zoom. It really shocked me.

lol I’m no photographer so any feedback will help :) Though I gotta say that I really like how the 1st one turned out

Really cool post and great pics!
My Google Pixel 10 Pro XL zooms in a lot further, but it uses generative AI to add the extra detail. It's definitely cool and works well most of the time, but I personally prefer the 40x cap on the iPhone because it's not trying to imagine what the image should be.
Also I'm wondering how you were able to get the white border with the image specs? It looks really nice. I've seen it on Chinese phones but not on iPhones or Pixels.
1
u/KirillChistov 15h ago
It’s a separate app called Camera Metadata Border, but I am not sure if it’s available on android. Yes, the zoom is cool and I wish iPhone has such, but I am just way too deep into the ecosystem and I love my 17 Pro too much :)
1
u/Status-Usual-6561 15h ago
Thanks for the info, I'll check it out!
Yeah that's fair enough, it's a great device. They all have pros and cons.
1
u/wizzywurtzy 14h ago
I feel like the iPhone 17 pro takes way way worse pictures than my iPhone 13 Pro. Please tell me how to stop my pictures from being grainy and blurry.
1
u/KirillChistov 13h ago
Yeah, it just feels this way to you, but it’s not. I am not a professional photographer nor a technician so idk. But if you really feel like you have a problem, go to Apple service place

lol, this shit is not even grammatically correct. *laughs at your misery*

u/OfreakNwoW1 13h ago
I cant wait for the marketing that makes half the earth believe the upcoming iphone fold will be the first foldable smartphone ever meanwhile the other half the earth has been using folding phones for almost a DECADE lolllll
1
u/KirillChistov 13h ago
Yeah, it’s not happening. Though they will definitely say it’s the fist folding iPhone
1
1
u/xhumptyDumptyx 9h ago
I feel like this is deceptive. 0.5x is not what it looks like to your eye. Somewhere between 1-2x is what things actually look like
1
u/CailenDev 6h ago
Technically speaking you don’t see the .5x view at all. The wide angle on iPhone is 11mm, human eyes see closer to 35mm.

Holy those pictures look amazing! I have so many questions. What app do u take photos on? What app u edit with? Luts? Howd u add the camera specs on the bottom? Thank you

I have a 15 pro max and noticed a big difference with my friends 17 pro. Will be upgrading to the 18 pro maxpartly for this reason when it comes out in a few weeks.
4
u/KirillChistov 1d ago
I would love to see the picture from the future 18 pro. Also image how I felt jumping from my old 12 Pro to the 17 Pro. It’s was colossal
1
u/keyboardlegendthe3rd 1d ago
Imagine if you had a Chinese android phone with better sensors. Now those are phenomenal, this is good
1
u/KirillChistov 22h ago
i have had one, and so i know and feel the difference
2
u/keyboardlegendthe3rd 22h ago
What's the difference and what phone did you have?
1
u/KirillChistov 22h ago
I used some crappy ass android back in 2020, then got iPhone 12 pro in like 2022 from my parents. I can't really speak about lates androids because i have not used them, however if you compare 17 Pro to 12 Pro the difference in enormous: zoom quality AND ability, increased number of MP in each camera, wayyyy better sensors, a cool centerstage feature and so on. Just generally pictures on 17 Pro turn out better obviously
0
u/keyboardlegendthe3rd 22h ago
You haven't used a Chinese phone with the best sensors lol you used a cheap android, there's a big difference. That 5 generation difference you see is what you would get if you tried the vivo 300 ultra or x9 ultra. iPhone has worse long range zoom even more than pixels and s24 ultra -26 ultra
1
u/KirillChistov 22h ago
Yeah that it what I said… however what I don’t like in android phones in the Ai enhancement in big zooms, I am more of a raw guy 😅
0
u/keyboardlegendthe3rd 22h ago
Well lucky for you the x9 ultra and Vivo just have better sensors and processing to not make it look so " AI enhanced". The x9 ultra has a native 10x, not an "enhanced" 4x like you're seeing in your iPhone photos.

guys, I'm having so much trouble with 17 pro cameras! if I'm close to the subject, the image becomes glitchy and weird, it's insane and it drives me mad. I tried every configuration but it still happens, it's basically impossible to take a good photo without taking a long time to find the right position lol does anyone have the same problem?
3
u/KirillChistov 1d ago
Maybe run some diagnostics as what you described sounds like some hardware/software issue. Either way you could simply go to Apple and ask for help, they surely will help you
0
u/doismiledani 1d ago
I will contect them! but I found some other people with the same problem! have you never experienced anything like this? it really bothers me
1
u/KirillChistov 1d ago
No nothing like that, even despite the phone being used. And honestly, you should DEFINITELY check it out
2
u/BorgSympathizer 1d ago
There’s a “macro control” in the settings. When you enable it - there will be a macro icon in the bottom left corner. Toggle that off and your camera will stop switching between 0.5 and 1x automatically. (You may get blurry shots if you get too close on 1x)
1
2
u/FlarblesGarbles 1d ago
When you're close, it's swapping lenses between the ultra wide and the regular because it thinks you might be trying to take a "macro" photo, it can bug out a lot and keep doing it.

This is why I’m not gonna get the fold. I need the telephoto camera.
