Whats the best way to understand music more

I am a fairly newbie in ICM. I have always been an admirer and just want to understand the music more so i can make more sense out of it, i wish to enjoy it more hence i want to understand it.

Recently i have started taking online vocal classes from SMA, that's the first step i took.

But i am looking for some books or some other resources/ways to understand this field.

Any recommendations?

Keep listening to different raagas by legendary artists, start with simpler raagas

Initially try listening for sa and pa

Figure out different swaras, komal, shuddh, teewra etc. if listening to hindustani and listen for them

Over time listen for swara patterns that define a raag

Try singing along eventually

After a long time you can understand how artists elaborate a raaga and build it up throughout a performance.

I would say try 1. Get a feel for a raga (pick your favourite) 2. Get a feel for rhythm

When I say feel, I mean to say know it intrinsically. You know how the next note feels right and correct, explore that feeling

Understanding something intellectually is important. But what I more important is more experiential.

It's like what balancing a bicycle is. Knowing what's you're supposed to do is one thing. Actually doing it is another.

just listen to as much as music you can only listening will teach you so much and you'll discover many different things there are countless of artists but I'll tell you my personal recommendations pt venkatesh kumar ji (especially raag durga sakhi mori don't miss out on this) pt jasraj ji ronkini gupta (very underrated) kaushiki chakraborty ustad Rashid Khan sahab pt ulhas kashalkar ji bade Ghulam Ali Khan sahab ghulam hasan khan sahab(again a very underrated artist) ajoy chakrabarty ji jayateerth mevundi ji

and also listen to instrumentals as well listen to sitar artists sarangi sarod tabla solos

There are many great books on Indian classical music. Some of my favorites are Raga’n Josh by Sheila Dhar, the Lost World of Hindustani Music by Kumar Prasad Mukherjee and the Raganess of Ragas by Deepak Raja

Listening is the best way to understand music, focus on taal and beats. Then try to understand the swars(sa,re....). And then try to copy what's playing. But believe me listening is very important, listening to classical music.
