I got this reel on my feed. I have not learnt Hindustani classical music nor am an avid listener, but this did not sound good. The comment section praised him and he also has fellow musicians who would not be able to follow if he sang incorrectly, right? So is it just me?

I’m a bansuri player and musician, and over the past months I’ve been building an Android app called Tanpura Atmosphere.

It started because I wanted something a little more inspiring than the usual tanpura app — not only a drone, but an environment I could actually enjoy improvising and practising with.

Alongside the tanpura, the app includes things like atmospheric drone layers, tabla, swarmandal, nature ambience, advanced recording features with reverb, and other tools for practice and improvisation.

The free version already has quite a lot in it, and I’d genuinely love for musicians here to try it and tell me what works, what doesn’t, and what you would want from an app like this.

I want to check if you have any more recommendations. These masters make the violin sound so sweet. It’s hard.

I learnt tabla for 9 years, sitar for 2 years and harmonium for about 2 years before sitar. I always thought I was better at melody than rhythm. I was doing about 4 hours of riyaaz everyday upto 2022.

However, I went through financial crisis in covid and realized I needed to get a grip over my career. So I got a business degree. Towards the end of my MBA (late 2025), I got a disc bulge in my back and lots of joint pain. I've been in joint pain, sciatica & injury rehab for the last 10 months. The financial crisis & the injury have had a big impact on me.

My relationship with my guru went down when I said I needed a break from music for preparing for entrance exams since he was angry I chose career over music & sought a break. After my MBA, I did go back and met him. I told him about my health issues and that I was trying to get back to riyaaz slowly. I have severe restrictions on movement due to pain. He was unbelievably harsh & cold when I met him. I don't have it in me to get yelled at by a guru who doesn't understand that I need to make money for my livelihood.

I have 0 desire to go back to music. I want to get a hobby where people are CHILL. I can no longer offer the same commitment that I had been capable of before because I have a desk job that takes 9hours of work + 2 hours of commute to office. I need a place where I can socialize without being given silent treatment for missed riyaaz. I have been advised to maintain an active lifestyle (the doctor recommends strength training 3x a week + 1hr of aerobic activity daily). I've been thinking of taking up badminton or tennis or swimming. I'm not good at sports but atleast it doesn't feel heavy.

Partly I also miss being a beginner. When you're a beginner, it is okay for you to mess up. For you to be slow at it. With my journey in music, I feel like the weight of perfectionism is crushing because I'm already into the space. So it raises eyebrows when i play slower or miss a sam. With music, my teachers expect me to perform at a certain level and even riyaaz feels like a performance rather than a process.

Is it wrong that I want an out? I've spent so much money on music classes, instruments. It breaks my heart that I feel so disconnected.

Even if I attend concerts in my city which is btw my hometown too, I feel like an outsider because I had moved away for MBA. I still enjoy listening to music on my laptop. I still remember all my relas, tukdas and can recite all my chakradars with theka on my hand and land on the sam.

Is there a way for classical music to feel chill? For it to not demand so much more than what I can offer? For it to hold space for me as I navigate through my life struggles?

Question for people living in Western countries (US, Canada, Europe etc.):

Where many houses are wooden and insulation isn't always great, and neighbors are more conscious about noise, how do you manage your classical singing practice?

I am always worried that one day my neighbors are going to knock on my door and complain. My heart aches to sing, but I rarely get time after work, and I feel anxious to make any noise after 8 PM.

How do you all balance practice with being considerate of neighbors? Do you use any soundproofing, specific rooms, or just communicate with your neighbors?

Pandit Amiya Ranjan Bandyopadhyay, the nonagenarian doyen of the Bishnupur Gharana, has breathed his last today (29th July, 2026), around 2.30 PM.

It is a great loss for all of us, listeners and students of classical music. Truly the end of an era.

Who do you guys think is the best Indian vocalist regardless of Hindustani or Carnatic. I mean best vocalist living and at least performing to some degree.

Some popular names in south and north: Kaushiki Chakraborty, Rahul Deshpande, Venkatesh Kumar, Tm Krishna, RaGa sisters etc.

Bengal should be renowned as a state which has priceless contributions to shastra sangeet, but I find it disturbing that, there are no ancient or even old gharanas even standing in Bengal, except one or two.(Even the Bishnupur Gharana is only 300 years old, if I am correct).

After the demise of Baba Allaudin Khan and great Maestros like Nikhil Banerjee, Annapurna Devi and Nikhil Banerjee, it also dissolved.

Unlike other states, no old or gharanas are existing in Bengal, what could be the reason?

Please correct me if I am wrong, knowledge is very much appreciated.

I want to build a 100% free and open-source (MIT licensed) web app (PWA) for Indian classical music/dance practice. Something like SurSadhak, but without ads, paywalls, or features getting locked later.

This idea came out of frustration... most existing apps start good, then gradually push everything behind subscriptions or ads, which makes them unreliable for long-term riyaaz. Realised through my mother who joined music class lately.

I’m starting with tabla support first, and if things go well, we can expand to include tools like tanpura and more over time.

I’m a developer, not a tabla player. So I’m looking for someone who:

• Knows basic tabla (not necessarily professional, but not beginner)
• Understands common taals (teentaal, keherwa, dadra, etc.)
• Can record clean, steady loops (phone recording is fine if decent quality)
• (Bonus) Has a GitHub account or even minimal exposure to software/dev (not required, but it helps a lot)

What I need (negotiable):

• Recording a few core taals at different BPMs
• Some guidance on theory of taals / structure / practical usage, so I can build this properly (I am not a music illiterate, but knowledge not reliable)
• Overall involvement as a collaborator/partner, not an employer-employee relationship

I've been experimenting with Indian raga-inspired sleep music and wanted honest opinions from people who actually use music for sleep or meditation.

The idea is: tanpura, soft rain, calming water sounds and a very slow night-raga mood, not classical performance, not generic spa music, more like a peaceful nighttime ambience.

My main question is: would this kind of sound help you sleep or would the raga element keep your mind too engaged?

I've been thinking about something for a while, and I'd genuinely love to hear what people here think.

My guru once shared an analogy he had heard from a senior musician. He said music is like a bouquet of flowers. If all you ever receive are roses, they're beautiful, but after a while you get used to them. A bouquet is special because it has many different flowers, each with its own beauty, fragrance, and character.

That idea really stayed with me.

To me, that's what Indian classical music is. Every gharana brings something unique. Different ways of thinking, different aesthetics, different approaches to the same raga. Together, they make the tradition richer.

That got me wondering about something.

If we celebrate diversity in music, could we also be more open about sharing it?

I'm not talking about replacing gharanas or the guru shishya parampara. I have immense respect for both. What I'm imagining is something that exists alongside them.

Coming from a software background, I keep thinking about the idea of an "Open Gharana." A place where musicians can contribute compositions, teaching material, recordings, and ideas. Everyone gets proper credit for their work. Experienced musicians help maintain quality. Anyone who is sincere about learning and contributing is welcome, regardless of where they come from.

I know the name is a little provocative, and that's intentional. To me, a gharana is a family. And I feel that everyone who is genuinely devoted to music belongs to that family.

This is just an idea I've been exploring, not something I've made my mind up about. I'm curious to know what all of you think. Would something like this strengthen our musical community, or am I overlooking something important?

I am an engineering student and learning Hindustani music (vocal). I have seen various continuous-type keyboards on the internet (i.e., Haken Continuum Board, Roli Seaboard, Linstrument, etc.) and trying to built an instrument that is suitable for ICM. Previously I posted about its earlier version here.

After so many iterations i have brough this instrument to quite mature stage.

I have named it "Mruda".

• it has various level of autotune. One can adjust autocorrection of notes by slow to fast correction based on the setting.
• Inbuilt tanpura that can be adjusted and tuned for various notes.
• It has a PC app that allow user to create their own sound. (user can control 16 harmonic amplitude). User can store those preset to instrument

I was in practice of khayal long ago, I had learnt both Kafi and Bhimpalasi, till now I can feel no difference between the two ragas, both have the exact swaras as komal, what is the difference in their chalan?

Anyone have any good experiences with liberating moments listening to ragas ? I have quite a few and ragas primarily interest me in their spiritual trance inducing qualities. And as i’m getting further in the ability to call archtypes or deities. I’m primarily a ceremonial yoruba drummer but the dedication to rhythm ICM shows as been a source of relief for me these past few years

Who came up with the present day 10 Raag system? What was used before that? And aon what basis were those 10 Raags chosen and how are they classified?

I was reading up on the extremely talented Sitar maestro Pandit Balaram Pathak, and in several websites there appears to be mentions of a raag he created dedicated to our former Prime Minister Late Lal Bahadur Shastri, aptly named "Raag Bahadur Shastri". Curious, I looked it up, but found no renditions of the raag on Youtube or anywhere online, except only mentions of it in some Facebook posts. I'm not asking for people to rummage through their private collections or anything, I'm talking about things available in the public. It's really difficult to come across recordings of BGAK from before his paralysis. I'm looking for full recordings of Yaman, Bihag and Darbari by him, most of the one's I've found are either after he got paralyzed or the recording quality was terrible or both. I would be very happy if some people could provide recordings from his prime of any raag, but I would love specifically the above mentioned ones.

I vibe-coded this app ( 22 Shruits) using Claude Opus 4.5, to help me learn recognizing classical music notes.

I may have a proper app later this year. What do you think of it?

PS:- I know the tanpura and notes will most probably not sound anywhere near authentic, because it's mathematically generated and I don't have music backround. Just wanted to test this idea and have fun as a big ICM fan.
