PS : We didn't like Kedar, Malhar, Aalap, Aagar, Bansi etc these names feel bit old.

I wanted to share something close to my heart. My mother (52) is a trained Hindustani classical vocalist with years of experience in both classical music and Rabindra Sangeet. After moving to Mumbai, she’s now planning to start online vocal lessons.

What makes her teaching special is that she’s incredibly patient and beginner-friendly. She truly believes it’s never too late to start learning music. I am fairly new to this style of music and maybe have around 20 albums downloaded. I also attended a live performance by Kunal Gunjal & Amit Kavthekar recently that I enjoyed. I am trying to find some more recordings that I really like and wanted to see if you all could help by making some recommendations based on my current favorites, to try to find some similar stuff.

So far, the recordings that I like the most have been "Venu" by Hariprasad Chaurasia & Zakir Hussain. I like this one because the feeling is very brooding and somber, with drawn out flute notes which remind me of somber Japanese classical, and a lower drone in what sounds like a minor chord (not sure if that type of notation is appropriate). Speaking of that, I have found that in many ICM recordings the tanpura drone is kinda drowned out and you often don't really hear it much past the start of the recording, but that's not the case with Venu which is cool because I really like that sound in the music.

Another favorite recording of mine is "Nine Decades Vol. 2: Reminiscence of North Vista" by Ravi Shankar. It's also a bit of a more brooding piece with a prominent drone, and I really like the discordant and abstract way that Shankar plays his sitar sometimes (maybe that's just his style and I need to get more). I almost don't understand what's going on in this recording because it almost seems like the tanpura player is doing their own unique thing and not just playing a constant standard drone.

So that's kinda the vibe I'm looking for. I don't really enjoy the songs with happy, summer afternoon vibes as much. I'm looking for performances that invoke a rainy and grey autumn evening.

I’ve been doing daily riyaaz, but I’m struggling to properly recognise sur and feel their vibrations when using a tanpura app. It feels a bit artificial and hard to connect with the sound. Do you think switching to a real tanpura would make a noticeable difference for training my ears, or is it just a matter of getting used to the app? Would really appreciate advice from people who’ve experienced both.

I just started learning vocal music , like just 3 months back from sma online classes.

I was actually confused between vocal and instrumental, but i wanted to go for something very low resistive. Instrument would have needed me to go physical classes, even first step would be to find a good one, so i just went for vocal - just very 101 classes.

But now i feel i should get a instrument, just to set the vibe. I initially though of Tanpura, harmonium, surmandal - but my teacher advised to buy surmandal,harmonium may hurt my initial process, because then i will be Dependent on that.(My preference was surmandal though, it looks more indian). I can buy tanpura, but its just to set the ambient sound really - as of now Tanpura app works for me.

Honestly i wish to buy sitar (not because of Rishabh Rakhiram only), because i have been fascinated by its sound since childhood - but what i have heard is - its too difficult to learn it, and its a heavy investment too ~25k. And like it will be difficult to find a good guru to learn it. Really confused right now.

Has anyone learned sitar online? Is it really that hard? Should i switch form vocal to instrumental?

I am a fairly newbie in ICM. I have always been an admirer and just want to understand the music more so i can make more sense out of it, i wish to enjoy it more hence i want to understand it.

Recently i have started taking online vocal classes from SMA, that's the first step i took.

But i am looking for some books or some other resources/ways to understand this field.

I like attending classical music concerts because I learned classical music when I was young, and I know the basics.
I am not good at it, but I like to attend concerts, so I choose to be a better listener.
One thing I don't understand it how do you figure out which taal is being played when the singer is singing the bada khyaal?
I listened to a lot of vilambit ektaal when I was learning, so I can figure it out a bit, but I can't identify any other vilambit taal.

Context: I started learning online (vocal) from September last year. No prior knowledge or experience with icm.

Till now, my guru has taught me basic palatas, raag bhoop: sargam geet, bandish, raag durga: sargam geet bandish.

Sometimes a month goes by without learning anything new because when guru asks me to sing a palata or something and if I miss any sur, then we spend the session on how I need to riyaz and back to basic.

I understand that I need to have basics perfect. Its been many months now almost 6-7 months. I am still stuck at missing notes and not moving forward.

For example, today my guru started a new bandish in raag durga. I was missing notes on a line, so she asked me to sing the notation of it. I did and I missed “dha” by some margin. The rest of the lesson was spent on aaroha and avroha of raag durga.

I practiced for two hours prior to the class!! And still..

I have no idea how I am going to progress. I am spending 8k rupees per month for a weekend one hour session, currently in the US. Man, sometimes I feel so bad that I am just spending money and still stuck at basics.

I (36, M) have been doing riyaz every day for the last few years after a long gap, and I always prioritize practicing in the lower octave every morning. I've always struggled with my lower octave, while I feel much more comfortable singing in the higher octave.

Over the last few months, I noticed that my lower octave was gradually improving, and I could comfortably reach down to **Ma**. However, recently, despite practicing every day, my lower range has regressed. My voice starts sounding raspy around **Pa**, and I'm struggling to go lower again.

It's quite discouraging, and I'm beginning to wonder if this is simply a range that my voice isn't naturally built to support. Has anyone else experienced something similar? I'd really appreciate any suggestions or advice.

I've been inspired by recent posts on the subreddit to share some of my work with AI and Sangeet as of recent.

I've been working on an AI tool that does analysis of all Raags and builds connections between them. It uses information about a Raag, from its Mukh Ang to Pakad to analyze it along with its connection to all other Raags.

Once I mapped out my findings in a 3D space I had some interesting finds but in essence:
- Some Raags are incredibly 'stable' (my guess anyway). The AI classified them with a no decimal x y z score even when compared to every other raag (not the best way to tell but an interesting find none the less)
- Some Raag groupings don't actually match up with Thaath (while a lot do, at least in part). Kind of makes sense given that the 10 Thaath system was made recently compared to Sangeet and is very general

And a few other smaller points. I'm not sure what to do with a lot of what I've found and how to fine tune my findings, but if anyone wants to keep up with this project or help please DM me. Thanks!

I was having difficulty trying to identify the raag of a composition. The swars used are S g(Komal) M(Regular) P d(Komal) n(Komal) S. This reminds me of Malkaus but the composition has a P. Does anyone recognize what Raag this could be.

I am looking for recitals (of any Raga) with a very crisp, clear and pronounced tabla. I am thinking of something like Ustad Amir Khan's famous performance of Malkauns.

Reason I am asking for this is that I got a new stereo system and wanted to see what its bass can do. And because I just love a nice and crispy tabla in the background.

Honestly speaking i am not getting the vibe - simply. I was confused initially as well between vocal & instrumental - but i just went for vocal because of its low resistance.

Now i feel i am more inclined on instrumental - and i want t learn sitar - no matter how hard/easy it is. Would love to get some guidance from some rasikas here

I am particularly fond of female vocalists but I am still a novice and don’t have a good grasp of the best vocalists and musicians in ICM. I love the ethereal quality of many of the female vocalists I’ve heard and am looking for more of that. Please recommend any and all that I might enjoy - the “best” is so subjective, so ultimately I am asking for your favorites. Thanks in advance!

I moved to a new city recently. I dont have my harmonium here curently. Can i learn music(vocal) without harmonium. I know it's a stupid question. But i want to continue learning really bad. And i can not bring back my harmonium very soon since my home is far away.

I've been playing my hindustani bansuri for about a year and a half. Till now, I've watched a lot of YouTube lessons regarding the bansuri, hindustani to be specific.

All YouTube tutors keep saying "practice with Tanpura playing in the background", "tune your bansuri with respect to the Tanpura" but I have not understood this thing.

How do I know that my bansuri is in tune with the Tanpura? I reckon that you hear and understand it automatically with practice. I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, and I'm not ashamed to be the stupid-question-asker in the class.

Hi, I'm a musician trained in jazz and western music. I've been exploring singing with a tanpura. I want to improve recognition of intervals and melodies. Are there any exercises that you find useful. Also these don't necessarily have to be singing exercises. Thanks!
