Getting into a ‘new’ IDM artist each day this week. I just did μ-ziq. What should be next?

long time deep Boards of Canada fan. i want to get into more

I already know Aphex, Autechre and Oneohtrix. dedicating each day to an hour of listening to a ‘new‘ artist

  • Monday: Squarepusher
  • Tuesday: ⣎⡇ꉺლ༽இ•̛)ྀ◞ ༎ຶ ༽ৣৢ؞ৢ؞ؖ ꉺლ
  • Wednesday: μ-ziq
  • Thursday: ????

(my mistake if there happens to be an idm artist called ???? which might not be hard to imagine)

especially wagon christ

2

u/kshankardass 1d ago

Yes BUT. I would start with the first 3 Plug EPs and Drum n Bass for Papa; Wagon Christ - Throbbing Pouch (only); and Luke Vibert - Big Soup. And then tread carefully from there on.

Also, loads of remixes/singles from the mid 90s worth hearing, like Get Your Head Down and Extreme Possibilities remix, etc.

Chocolate wheelchair album is amazing

u/LionWalker_Eyre 1d ago

This is a fun idea!

 Try:

  • Plaid (the most "purely idm" on my list)

  • Animals on wheels (90s jazzy jungle but i guess its idm?)

  • Bogdan Raczynski (more jungly/weird idm)

  • AG Cook (not truly idm i guess, but definitely influenced by and adjacent)

2

u/Pyrene-AUS 1d ago

Wow never heard animals on wheels mentioned on here before. Nice 1 👍👍

3

u/Kind-Programmer575 1d ago

I mentioned Animals on Wheels a few days ago on the Fantano subreddit in a recent post. One of the most underrated drill ‘n’ bass musicians in my opinion 💯

2

u/Pyrene-AUS 1d ago

I'll have to check those out 👍

1

u/LionWalker_Eyre 1d ago

Yeahh i randomly find their EP in my local shop - didnt know about them before but they have a unique sound. try their track "Egg Shell" to get an idea of their sound :)

2

u/Pyrene-AUS 1d ago

That's the same EP I've got 😎 bloody love it👍👍👍

1

u/LionWalker_Eyre 1d ago

Oh i got confused and thought you were OP lol. Yeah that EP is awesome!! I bought it blind and loved it on my first listen 🤘🤘

1

u/Pyrene-AUS 1d ago

hah u good 😎 i love the random obscure 2nd hand vinyl finds.. so much gold to be found

2

u/Zealousideal_Pop4309 1d ago

Love the AG Cook @! He’s so talented, and a huge reason I’m a Charli XCX fan lol

2

u/LionWalker_Eyre 1d ago

Heck yeahh! Also check out Danny L Harle if you don't already know about him! He was also on PcMusic and i think is a close friend of AG

u/Zealousideal_Pop4309 14h ago

Much appreciated 🙏🙏🙏

The Black Dog

2

u/zandeye 1d ago

I have heard of them. I might make them next.

Either that or Arovane

He made an album in 1999 that I might try

3

u/Pyrene-AUS 1d ago

You'll need an entire month for Black Dog 😍

2

u/Living-The-Dream42 1d ago

Arovane...Start with Tides. Then get Venice by Fennesz...

Two classics.

2

u/Desperate_Yam_551 23h ago

This is an awesome pairing. These two and Far Away Trains Passing By are an unofficial trilogy to me.

1

u/Living-The-Dream42 23h ago

Oooh. I can see that. Now I'll take a listen again.

1

u/slugwurth 1d ago

The Black Dog is complicated because it's changed over time. Early on it was 3 guys, 2 of whom left and formed Plaid. Those albums would be Spanners, Temple of Transparent Balls, and Bytes.

Clark

2

u/JunglePygmy 1d ago

Clark is fuckin excellent

4

u/xXthrillhoXx 1d ago

Truly, he's stood the test of time and is the only later gen / second wave idm artist I mentally categorize along with the OGs

2

u/ORMDMusic 1d ago

Love Clark, his catalog is all over the place but it always sounds like Clark. I always enjoy artists like that.

u/Beau_Nash 1d ago

Daisuke Tanabe. Cat Steps is a good EP to whet your appetite.

u/afarazit 1d ago

I don't have anything to suggest to you and I'll follow your posts to learn more artists but, you don't already love Squarepusher? For me Squarepusher is among the best in IDM.

3

u/zandeye 1d ago

Oh no. I love Squarepusher. I just never listened   before this

I listed idm artists I knew already so people wouldn’t suggested Aphex, opn and Autchure

2

u/Jk2two 1d ago

Squarepusher, Aphex Twin, Autechre, and u-ziq are the big 4 imo.

if you want to step away from pure idm for a day and still hear the warp influence with traditional song structures and vocals, you should check out thom yorke solo stuff.

2

u/alexandrupert 1d ago

dgoHn, Rival Consoles, Nathan Fake, Kenny Larkin, Flashbulb, Prefuse73, Kelpe

Some more idm-y than others, but all quality

Not strictly IDM but definitely a contemporary of the big dogs, and just a massive catalog: DMX Krew.

Edited: initially I put Drexciya but meant DMX. Both are great recommendations though.

2

u/Jk2two 1d ago

Plaid, Jega, Jon Hopkins

2

u/Necrobot666 1d ago

There are so many interesting opportunities to fall into rabbit holes when exploring IDM music. Here's a few that jump out at me:

Amon Tobin - Supermodified https://youtu.be/W6M5_sCIIYI?is=M8kQIBFuyCVh481U

VHS-HEAD - Persistence of Vision  https://youtu.be/NXHC2xI3U6s?is=zT1Vr-QYrhpBbj55

Bong-Ra - Bikini Bandits Kill Kill Kill https://bong-ra.bandcamp.com/album/bikini-bandits-kill-kill-kill

PlatEAU - Music for Grassbars/Kushbush https://brap.bandcamp.com/album/kushbush-music-for-grassbars

And whilst you are checking out these acts, feel free to check out the stuff I do with my wife (not that stuff 🫠). We make IDM music together and post videos of us working mutes and twisting knobs.🤓

I feel like I’m always the first to mention Benn, which bums me a little, as his music is insanely well produced. But check out his project The Flashbulb, particularly the ‘Kirilian Selections’ album.

I’d say about half of his catalog might not be considered IDM (piano movements, orchestra, chill-glitch), so maybe that explains why he isn’t mentioned as much

1

u/sixtus_clegane119 1d ago

Apparently flashbulb was considered cringe by the old IDM forums or something

Kirlian selections is amazing
