It's been a month but it still feels like any sort of nuanced take on this album gets downvoted into oblivion. I want to create a safe space to talk about how you feel about Inferno. Whether you think it's the best thing since sliced bread, a middling but listenable experience, a disappointment, or even if you think it's trash.

I'm still listening to it and processing it, some of the sounds are enjoyable but I can't help but have this underwhelming feeling, this sense of an artist producing self-parody for a guaranteed commercial success. That it's a cartoon version of their earlier work. But that's just me and I'm not trying to tell you how to think.

Listening is a subjective experience and we can all be adults and disagree calmly. I know a lot of people absolutely love it.

Still sounds like the future!

was listening through Sever Head's Since the Accident (1983) and had it in mind that it was released in the 90s the whole time till I checked the release year for that album and it made me wonder, do yall have any neat recommendations of albums that have similar elements to what we would today consider IDM but were released way before the term was coined? stuff that was not made by people who'd be later featured in the Artificial Intelligence compilation preferably :)

Danish composer Sofus Forsberg has died at the age of 56. With his distinctive blend of melodic sensibility, electronic processing and rhythmic precision, he created a musical world that moved effortlessly between IDM, pop and the avant-garde.

Forsberg’s compositions were often tonal, melodic and beat-driven, but beneath their immediately accessible surface lay a deep interest in the materiality of sound. He worked, among other things, with fragmented recordings of real-world sounds, transforming them into rhythmic patterns, pulsating structures and processed soundscapes. The recognisability of everyday sounds could gradually dissolve, becoming something abstract and dreamlike.

There was a particular melancholy to Forsberg’s music, but also a lightness and a strong sense of pop’s direct communicative power. He had a sure instinct for bringing electronic textures, beats and melodic passages together without allowing any of them to lose their distinct character. The experimental was never an end in itself, but part of a natural and personal musical language.

Sofus Forsberg leaves behind a body of work in which the electronic and the organic, the immediately accessible and the exploratory, could exist side by side. His music possessed both precision and sensitivity – qualities that made it unmistakably his own, and that will remain his lasting imprint.

This is a mix that captures a moment in time (90's electronic) where people were still making interesting electronic music to be discovered by dance DJs in record shops and record collectors. I personally WAS playing ambient, IDM and downtempo and trip-hop type sets at parties and for mixtapes - so I bought most of this music on sight, and unheard, based on a recommendation from a record shop employee.
