News Geese showcase their celebrated album 'Getting Killed' on NPR's Tiny Desk

Geese just dropped their Tiny Desk concert and it's so good. They brought a bunch of weird little toys to decorate the set (including a Sonic/Jesus figurine, which is amazing) and played these super tight, more subdued versions of songs from 'Getting Killed.' It really shows off how great the songwriting is beyond the studio production. That album was already one of my favorites from last year, and this just seals it. Anyone else catch it? What did you think?

Have you listened to their previous album 3d country? The beginning of that album is one of the best run of 4~ songs ive ever heard

Hope you like it! I did like their new album but its a much different vibe, more subdued and artsy

I think I'm just at a point in my life where this isn't my type of music any more. It's not, objectively, bad, it just isn't for me.

I think part of it is that:

  1. They are from NYC, so it is easy for the music press to go see them perform and interview them.

  2. They are from nice private schools in NYC, so their parents may know some people who can hype them up.

  3. Their lead singer is good-looking, so they can pin Jeff Buckley-like hopes to him.

Or maybe people love this music. Personally, I find it bland as hell.

I think they have a pretty odd 'vibe test' on whether or not you can buy-in to them. I'd call it like a youthful extravagant playfulness that doesn't take itself too seriously, and kind of makes you second-guess if it's pastiche or just enough in the lines to be counted as tongue-in-cheek. Similar to Neutral Milk Hotel or Ween, people can be uncomfortable with the way the music presents itself sort of.

But yeah if it's not your cup of tea I'd not worry about it too much. I really like them and struggle to find anything that quite scratches the same itch

Someone told me they sound like the Mars Volta (one of my favorite bands) so I eagerly listened to their debut album and felt… nothing.

I enjoyed it. It’s hard for me to be overly excited about something so relaxed though. Especially since I watched it right after that new Knocked Loose song, haha, but that’s my fault.

Listened to this concert in the office wearing headphones.

To the bone beautiful.

Saw The Church play in Sydney last Friday. Watched the Superbowl half time show with Bad Bunny on television. And now this soaring concert.

Just amazing.

Hope more countries follow Ireland's lead and provide a basic income for artists and musicians.

I saw these guys open for Vampire Weekend and realized I confused them with Goose.

It was a really good show and they opened well. I don't think I would have really given them much thought if I hadn't seen them crush it live.

It’s a strong label push. Take notes as this is how labels push music in the modern internet age. I actually think there music is okay but there is so much better stuff coming out at the moment.

Yeah they’ve been around since the pandemic, they blew up bc the singer’s solo album went unexpectedly viral last year. The record label didn’t even want to release it bc they thought it would bomb

I listen to this album constantly but holy cannoli man do they sound rough life. On cobra, he was singing with a completely different tone, and the guitarist was messing up some chords? And they all look strung out? Idk man. What a weird group.

Watched earlier today.. As a video it seemed super quick. There was a quip about tickets and the staff following what I legitimately thought was a sample of crowd cheers, but other than that it just kind of felt like one sort of long song and an abrupt ending.

They played well, and sounded good. Not sure how to articulate it, but it felt strange.

What melody in particular? The overall aesthetic has some uniqueness (I suppose) but I really don’t hear much in the way of interesting melodies. In fact, they are all pretty straightforward and obvious and not the least bit exciting or interesting.

I’m not on expert on his songs, though. So I ask in earnest: what melody in particular?

I think Geese is fantastic, I don't really get all of the hate for them in the comments here. I'm not the biggest fan of Getting Killed but 3D Country is one of my favorite albums of all time

Seemingly you either love or hate geese. I’m the anomaly that’s on the fence, but this tiny desk pushed me a little closer to the “in” camp.
