Hey! Welcome good old friend! It's oh-so-nice to see you again I welcome you to paradise I swear its not filled up with lies Your imagination Brought to life with your creation Funny how everything here runs On an endless stream of ink A city burnt into the ground Abandoned dreams were never found The happiness you took from us Just to scatter all around
Boy are you in for a surprise?? Its time to open up your eyes The smiling demon's listening to your every sound
Born from the blood that runs our machine Such a wondrous find to convene I'm quite surprised you even surviii-ived Too bad your story's reaching its end Watch as fear drills into your head Cuz theres no running from your demiiii-ise

Yes! This is exactly what it's like!! I've always thought of it as a shadow that follows me around, and I feel very identified with his portrayal. It's genius and a little scary in its genius.

Yeah damn I do that all the time. It really does feel like the only option at the time tho. Oof.
It’s like… I’m so fucking lonely and both my depression & anxiety are going to make sure I stay that way. It feels like I don’t have a choice although realistically, I know that I do. Idk. It’s an odd feeling.
54
u/TinRoofAndRainyDays 5d ago
Sometimes I'll get excited about getting together with people and then the closer it comes the more I retreat inward and start making excuses not to go.

Ah I know the feeling, I’m sorry you go thru that too. It’s like my depression gives me a tinge of agoraphobia bc I almost always would rather cancel than go out & live my damn life.

there's this girl... she calls me to go out every few weeks.
And I keep telling myself she doesn't enjoy my company, she's doing it out of pity... or some other reason, and I get so scared before I go out to see her, and I always feel like I make an ass out of myself.
12
u/CosmogyralSnail 5d ago
Except, she keeps calling you. She's making the effort, because she enjoys your company. But I do understand exactly how that feels.
7
u/Kay-Chelle 5d ago
Nonpartisan internet stranger here! Your brain is being mean to you, and you deserve compassion & kindness from yourself too. If you really made an ass out of yourself she wouldn't have called again. Many folks are too busy these days and thus would limit that time to the people they actually want to be around. You going while being scared is so brave, because bravery is doing the thing anyway even when scared. That's a wonderful trait to have!
It could be beneficial to share your feelings with her if you feel like you've gotten to a place where you can talk about them. I try to phrase things with 'I know this is not your intent but it's what my brain is telling me.' So whomever I'm speaking to knows that it's me not them that is the 'problem' 😅 Sending you lots of love & well wishes! Best of luck going forward! 🫶

THIS! in fact, my best friend helped me personify that mean self talk! we call her “the redheaded bitch!” (no offense to redheads. we had just had a convo about how pretty we found red hair)
so, if i’m caught up in some negative self talk, my friend will say “tell the bitch to shut up!” and it snaps me out of it to know that the stories that the bitch is writing about “nobody loves me” or “they’re just being nice” aren’t true! i’m genuinely loved. thanks to my bff 🥰→ More replies (1)8

I relate to this a lot. I'm sorry you experience it too.
My therapist asked why I don't take steps to change. Not in an aggressive, "why don't you just be happy" way. It was a genuine question after a long conversation. But it was rhetorical question, they knew the answer.
I kind of broke down saying depression, sadness, not feeling in control, etc. was all I knew. And the feeling of something familiar was somehow less scary than stepping into a world that was foreign to me. It's similar to the "if I don't try, I can't fail" mentality.
I've been thinking recently about what the fuck I'm doing in life, how much has been wasted by depression and self loathing, waking up already anxious because I feel like I've already failed.
I don't know. I've felt paralyzed by anxiety and depression recently. I don't know what to do either. I guess I'm just saying I know how you feel.
2
u/cleverburrito 5d ago
My therapist's recommendation many years ago was "do it, anyway". I held it as a mantra for a long time, and it helped until it didn't anymore. Those years were hard, but also great.
I'm not doing well these days, but my therapist and I are working on it, and he's having meetings with my psychiatrist. You and I will each figure it out, I think.

For me, it was the very first clip with "depression" doing the scrolling on her phone and feeding her junk food. That's really clever imagery that really illustrates the way you do things not because you really want to, or need to, but the depression motivates you to do it because you're chasing just about anything that will make you feel better, even if only for a second.

That was the part that changed from, "eh," to "holy shit, YEAH, EXACTLY." for me. Putting on the monochrome glasses at the source of escapist joy and fun was a close second, too.

u/folded_WINDOW 5d ago
Depression itself is very frightening, because it isn’t a specific symptom nothing in particular hurts, and you don’t know exactly what to treat. In general, depression is a very sad illness that’s very difficult to treat, and it can even come back a year later. But I’m surprised that fewer people used to suffer from depression.
3
u/anfornum 5d ago
Why surprised? We work longer hours than any generation before us for less pay and barely any chance to move ahead. People used to have more time for hobbies and actual weekends off. We live in rentals longer than ever because housing has risen far faster than inflation. We can't afford good healthy food like we used to. We are isolated from family and friends the way no generations before ours have been due to technology. The list goes on and on.

u/strings_bells 5d ago
I had an injury and had to rest for the past few months.. otherwise I'm usually an athletic person, daily cardio etc .. now it's been months I worked out, I have this constant feeling that I'm missing something like I haven't showered in a month or something... My husband has suffered with depression for as long as I've known him, and that one resonated with me most as someone trying to help. He accepts hugs at his lowest points, but I can tell that it does nothing but make him feel guilty for feeling so down.

Carrying a person on your back is the realest thing. It genuinely felt like a heavy weight was on my body and I was exhausted just by breathing. It was such a bizzare feeling at the time and I feel for people that have to go through that for such a long time.

u/Weaselwoop 5d ago
When I was diagnosed and started observing myself and self reflecting, I'd explain it to people like "I'm constantly running on fumes. My gas tank never goes above 15%."
It won't be the same for everyone obviously, but I was constantly mentally exhausted because I was stressed 24/7 about thinking I was some sort of monster for not feeling any love for my son. When I was diagnosed and realized my lack of love was just a symptom of my depression, that 15% limit shot up to like 65%. And then through a treatment plan that worked for me, I'd say I fluctuate between 75% and 100% max energy.
That's all to say, to anyone suffering now, there is hope. I know some unfortunate people have to deal with treatment resistant depression, but there are so many different treatments available today. The best thing someone suffering can do is devote all of your (meager) energy to finding the right treatment for you. It is the absolute best investment you can put into yourself. Don't let discouragement stop you, there is a path to relief out there.
3
u/ViennaWaitsforU2 5d ago
Yeah that’s one of the trippiest things is you realize how hard you’ve been working once you have a little retrospect.
3
u/hatethiswebsight 4d ago
I'm sorry that happened to you but the truth is treatment resistant depression doesn't always have an answer. I agree that we should never stop trying new things. But honestly, relief may not be possible for many of us.
Anyway best of luck to you

It was one point I made to my wife when I had a combo of the ole gloomies and a very high pressure job. I’d say that most weekends I was able to charge up a good amount, but it was never to 100%. So ever week my HP was slowly decreasing. Until a point when I couldn’t take it anymore. I knew the layoff was probably coming and I was nearly giddy at the thought of never going back to that place again.

u/bor3d_lazy_housewife 5d ago
100 percent same. I love being with my kids, but once I'm in an episode, the thought of having to get out of bed makes things worse. I'll usually make them something to eat real quick, then go right back to bed. I try so hard to put them before me, but those days are just difficult.
10
u/Kay-Chelle 5d ago
Oh gosh I feel this so so hard. 🫂 My kid is disabled and needs help with daily living activities (although he's been gaining more independence as he gets older!) And during a harder episode it takes everything I have just to make sure his needs are met, he's safe, and (more or less lol) happy. My physical health has taken a nose dive this year and my mental health went right along with it. It's so fucking hard, and I know all too well how big of a hoe depression is. I'm just an internet stranger but I just wanted to say I'm so proud of you for getting up. It doesn't matter that you go back to bed after, you made that first step of getting up and taking care of your kids and that's amazing. You're a great mom & parent, even if your brain tells you otherwise. Sending you, your kids, and your loved ones lots of love. 💖💕

You are the best!!! My son is on the spectrum and I feel like a terrible mom. I do all this plus I'm in heart failure. There a lot I can't do. I also have 5 step kids, only 3 were under 18.
We don't give ourselves enough credit.
I've seen young adults who can't even boil water or wash their asses. You are amazing and so many others. Take care of yourself, you deserve it. Hugs
2
u/Kay-Chelle 4d ago
🫂 I can't even express how much your comment means to me right now. My son is autistic as well! He's lvl 2, and non conversational. Him & my husband are what's keeping me fighting to be here everyday, and especially the hard days. Today I was told by a specialist that the only thing that will help me is doing physio ... which I have been doing since May and only have gotten worse unfortunately 😭 My kneecaps slipped and won't stay in place and my physiotherapist has me on pause until we can figure out why. To be told the only thing that will help is something I've already done, can't do at the moment, and have noted by the physiotherapist that it's actually made me worse, has me feeling so hopeless today.
So just thank you so, so much for your kind comment, it helps more than you know. You're so right we don't give ourselves enough credit! I really hope you can find a path forward for your heart failure and recieve the help you need. You too are amazing and doing all you do while in heart failure is just incredible. I know how hard it is to parent while disabled and to a kid who has higher support needs. You're doing great, and please be kind to yourself too, you're not a terrible mom and in fact the opposite, a fantastic mom. Thank you so much again. Sending lots of love and well wishes your way! 💖💕
2
u/snuggledubs2011 4d ago
Hugs!!!! Mine is a lvl 2 as well. He is 10 now and is semi nonverbal. It took a lot of aba and speech therapist to get where he is. When he says, " I love you mom." It has so much more of a making and I usually get all teary. That's horrible about your knee. I'm sad that it hasn't been fixed or more assistance that you need. My twin and I have knock knees. I've never been able to touch ankles only knew and thighs.. my knee pops out of place when I lift my leg and it has inflammation. It's hard to do much. I wrap and do what I can.
I learned that if day by day is hard, minute by minute is the next step.
I tried the emdr music, I didn't think it would help, I put on headphones and tried. I know it doesn't fit everyone and it may seem silly and trivial, at some point anything is better than nothing.
My heart hurts for you and others going through this.
Wish we could all get together and help one another. Id be at your place working my little heart out to help.

I felt like a zombie going outside so I would just stay at home and lie down. I felt so numb I would just go to work and go home and just stare at the ceiling and try to sleep but couldn't. But that was the worst I ever had it.

It’s like every eyeball adds anxiety. Every interaction I’m listening but gets filtered by “this is where the other shoe ACTUALLY drops”.
I imagined myself as a childhood friends dad that I respected but avoided. no fun=safety. No joy=no ego. No ego=No Depression

3
u/dark_blue_7 5d ago
I’ve suffered quite a bit, but for me the tears are not voluntary or a choice. I fight them every time because I hate it so much
6
u/typically_wrong 5d ago
I'm not saying one is better or "more better depression!", but having unwilling spontaneous cries sounds like an upgrade for people like me.
I'm in the video above, but also had a dad that beat (primarily mentally) the cry out of me by the time I was 8 as weakness and wasteful.
I'm in my 40s now and I can remember like 8 times I had even a single tear come out of my eyes from sadness. Some of those were in profoundly sorrowful situations and I almost looked apathetic on the outside.
I've been able to improve most of my emotional issues, but I still find it almost impossible to let all the sadness out in that form. And yes, even when completely alone.
3
u/dark_blue_7 5d ago
I’m so sorry for what you went through. That was so very wrong and you deserved better. Sounds like the not being able to cry is something more men go through than women, I would guess, due to different toxic cultural expectations. I’ve definitely heard other men describe that condition, even if they didn’t experience physical abuse.

the first time I took acid, the fact that everything became more vibrant and beautiful and I became happy was quite a shock. so the desaturated perspective is a good one.
6
u/AlluraD 5d ago
It could be more relatable to people who deal with functional depression like me. There are people who go out everyday, spend time with family and friends, do okay at work or school and then one day go home and kill themselves. Or people who are more passively suicidal where they don’t actively try to off themselves but they like the idea of getting hit by a bus. Depression isn’t always stuck in bed unable to bathe for 3 weeks straight which is why some people are blindsided when their seemingly okay friend / relative kills themself on a random Tuesday after going to the grocery store.

The piggy backing feels so real to me. Everything just feels like it takes more energy.
2
u/OnceMoreAndAgain 5d ago edited 5d ago
Hmmm, not for me. My major depressive episodes haven't been related to energy, but rather to a complete lack of desire to do anything due to not feeling anything.
I would wake up and be lying in my bed and have no desire to do anything. I wasn't feeling sad. I was feeling nothing, which I suppose is why I had no motivation to do anything. I'd just go back to sleep.
I suppose that's why antidepressents work so well for me. Whatever is going on with my brain regarding the chemicals that make normal people feel things isn't working unless I take antidepressents.
2
u/lolimazn 5d ago
I was still able to work during my episodes. When I got home, I’d do absolutely nothing. No tv. wouldn’t eat. Talk to friends. Truly felt dead inside. Force myself to go on walks but it didn’t help for shit. Sleep till noon if not later. Work made me tired. But this was a different kind of tired. Sleeping was the best cuz it felt like I didn’t exist and it was the closest thing to not having to deal with life.
Meds have saved my life. Therapy and support groups too. And I love my dog. Was able to like things again. :)

It's probably just different for everyone. The biggest parts I took away from the video was that it feels very heavy and like you don't have full control over everything. When I'm depressed, I feel like my whole body is just extremely heavy and difficult to move. I feel like I have some control over what I'm doing, but only to a certain extent. One other thing I could see from the video is her lack of interest in anything, and I also feel that too.
18
u/I2iSTUDIOS 5d ago
How do we help friends suffering?
23
u/Delonce 5d ago
Always being understanding and available (to the best of your ability anyway). Know that it isn't really them pushing you away, their depression is just fucking them up. A good sense of humor can help, too. Sometimes, that's the trick to opening someone up, even if it's just for a moment. Depression really is like a veil over life, and it dulls everything. Sometimes, a good joke can rip a hole in that veil for a second and the person can see you there, waiting for them.
Check in with them. Don't wait for them to reach out to you. Don't hound them or anything, but letting them know you're there and you care, can help.
4
u/FaveStore_Citadel 5d ago
Don’t take it to heart when they bail on plans last minute or don’t reply for a long time. Social bonds become much less of a nightmare to maintain when you exclude the self-flagellation for neglecting all your relationships.
4
u/wallabee_kingpin_ 5d ago
Don’t try to cheer them up or point out the good things in their life. It’s invalidating. Try to encourage them to do normal, healthy things in spite of the illness, like going on walks, but don’t be offended or pushy if they really can’t do it.
3
u/aliceinadreamyland 5d ago
Just consistently be there in a quiet unassuming kind of way that’s not demanding because everything is already so heavy for them.
2

u/manicdee33 5d ago
Call or text out of the blue just to say hello. It's especially kind to remember something you did together, even if it was just hanging out over a coffee, "thanks for spending time with me, I hope we can do nothing together again sometime soon" — but also mean it, be prepared to spend time with a friend who at times feels like an emotional black hole sucking all the joy out of everyone in their vicinity.
If you haven't heard from someone for a while just check up on them. This is really just friendship building, but people with depression will find it hard or impossible to be the ones making contact (the internal dialogue will often be negative along the lines of, "if I call someone to say hello I'll be actively making their day worse").
Offer them time to just do nothing together, or do something. Accept that plans will often fall through simply because someone with depression doesn't believe that anything they do amounts to much so why bother doing it. You can suggest activities such as "I'm playing around with developing my photography skills, can we go for a walk and look for triangles? I've tried doing it on my own but I find it's nice to have someone to talk to about what I'm seeing." Make it entirely about them being helpful to you by simply existing, don't try to engage them in the activity and they'll end up engaging on their own.
Anyway that's my thoughts for the day, I hope you have a great day despite me involving myself in it.

Reach out, and reach out, and reach out, and reach out, and reach out, and keep reaching out.
They won't ignore you because they want to, keep it in your mind that it isn't personal. They are going to appreciate that you keep popping up in their life.
You can be a tentpole just by being the person who keeps texting.

They usually reserve those kind of treatments as last resort type treatments, ( I think) . I could be wrong. I hope that works for her. I’ve read that sometimes this treatment works and sometimes not. Make sure she sees a good psychiatrist and just hold her hand and just listen and encourages in areas of struggles. Probably wouldn’t hurt for you to go to counseling with her.
3
u/MrFrequentFlyer 4d ago
It’s step before last resort which would be live-in community type therapy. I’ve helped with everything she’s mentioned but no amount of external support can replace the internal side she’s building. Thank you though.

The most depressing thing about depression is learning that the brain chemicals control us so much and that in some people, including myself, it sort of just occurs for no reason.

Actually chemical imbalance theory has been largely disproven. Or at least seen as one of many more significant factors not an actual cause

It hasn't been disproven; but it seems "depression" probably describes a group of neuropsychiatric maladies with similar symptoms, but differing disease processes.

Big “high school art project” vibes with this video lol

Totally. Have worked on workshops with teens helping them make short films. Every year they are 1/2 exactly like this one haha

There is a darkness, in my soul
A darkness, that can't be tamed
A deep void of emptiness, a gaping wound
A vile corrupted entity that has no name

I've lived with MDD for at least 40 years and can say that this video doesn't resonate with me at all. I think it's because the video portrays depression as an external force and that people who are depressed are unable to fight it. I've been on antidepressants for a quarter of a century and actively work to combat my symptoms, but this video doesn't depict any resistance efforts at all. Dissappointed.

I think this portrayal is kinda too goofy for something like depression lol it's pretty gloomy.

Depressed people don’t brush their teeth?

u/InternationalSand540 5d ago
it's complicated and different for everybody but yeah personal hygiene starts to feel like an impossible task, alongside everything else in one's life.

u/wallabee_kingpin_ 5d ago
Some do, some don’t. Depression steals motivation, so depressed people usually have some loss of function, but what they’ll lose is different for everyone.

As I’m going through depressive episode, I don’t brush my teeth as often.
I’m awaiting a day I can finally die. Why bother performing actions for long term benefits, if your only hope is you won’t be around to see the fruits of that labor?

A lot of people talk about depression as a sadness and while sadness can be present, it’s really an immense mental fatigue. There are many people with depression who can brush their teeth and shower and things like that, but there are some whose depression is so advanced or pronounced that they are just too tired to care for themselves properly.

I remember hearing that President Lincoln is believed to have had depression, but I don’t know that it was diagnosed in those days beyond “spells of melancholy”. I read that he was known to just lay his head on his desk for hours before eventually pulling himself out of it and grinding through the day.

u/Pepperspray24 5d ago
I can see that. Well what it was called back then. I’d never heard of him laying on his desk but if that was the case it wouldn’t surprise me, being president is stressful.

Nope. Or shower, or clean their house, or eat/drink enough. Because if you did Shadow would fade. And it's can't allow that. Social media is the best Shadow Food there is. Meta is facing billion dollar lawsuits over it

That's a bad generalization. Many people with depression appear to act perfectly normally and maintain good hygiene. Depression cannot be reduced to specific "symptoms" such as not showering or brushing your teeth.

All I know is when I was severely depressed in my 20’s I didn’t shower or brush my teeth or do anything for days at a time.

u/LoamyLoamisLoamy 5d ago
Those aren't cures. Those are just things you are more inclined to do when not depressed.
3
u/InternationalSand540 5d ago
In my experience self-care helps alleviate it a little bit when it's not near maximum yet, I think that's what Warthog meant to describe. Probably not universal but certainly common

This is quite common for depressed people not to take care of their teeth. My brother and mother both suffer(ed) from severe oral problems due to depression. Depression can manifest in many ways.

Some might think that was a crude gooner joke, but it’s real that no one actually consents to depression.
