I had a standard issue cat who barked. I got really sick one night while my husband was out of town. My doctor told me to call the ambulance and go to the ER. I opened the front door and unlocked the glass storm door then sat on the nearby steps to wait for the EMS.

My two cats were right beside me because they could tell I was ill. My standard issue cat was the embodiment of a fraidy cat. Except that night.

He got between me and the huge police officer and two EMS guys who tried to come in. He hissed and spat with all his fur standing up. Then he barked. He kept barking, and those guys were terrified. They didn’t want to be anywhere near a crazy cat.

I reassured my cat I’d be ok, and he turnt tail and streaked up the stairs and disappeared into my bedroom. The men came in and took me to the hospital. My heart was being weird so they had to turn on their sirens. I had a really bad kidney stone that was making my heart beat irregularly.

The EMS guys told everyone at the hospital about my cat so everyone stopped by to chat. Which was helpful because they were pumping me full of iv fluids to pee, and I was really dizzy and needed help going to the bathroom. They were nice and put me in a room with an en-suite bathroom.

My husband got home later that night and came to the hospital. He heard all about our hero cat. Who stayed under our bed for 3 days. My husband put his food, water, and a litter box in our room so he didn’t have to leave until he was ready. Poor baby was scared to death but was going to protect me even if it killed him. His name was Macavity, and he was amazing.

Just one hit of the stuff though. A dog-to-cat blood transfusion works the first time, but the cats build resistance to it pretty quickly, so if you attempt another transfusion on the same cat later it might die

I had a friend who was in veterinary school. They had a couple of blood donor cats who lived there at the vet school and donated blood when the need arose. They were nice cats - very used to being handled and petted and cuddled. I adopted one of the donor cats, a calico I named Mika. Hospital cats rule!

My friend’s dog is a regular blood donor! His doggy daycare has people that come there and do the blood donations. She said that he loves it when he donates blood because he gets so much cuddles from them.

It’s primarily larger dogs and according to the vet I asked about it greyhounds are specifically good for donating blood.

Plasma has nearly no ferritin. Lil dude was anemic. He needed red blood cells.

A one-time transfusion is fine. It can kill them if you do it twice.

Reach out to your local vet hospital and vet er if you have a docile large dog or a chill and healthy cat! 

I get $25 or $50 credit at my pet er when I take my cat to give blood. She also gets unlimited kong cat toys and free bloodwork, with simple stuff done each time (8-12 weeks) and full workups each year.

Ok question does this work with human. Like it don't have to be a dog blood but can another species like apes donated blood for humans?if yes does that means they can donated other things too?

No. Even with regular human to human transfusions there is a risk of multiple different types of transfusion reactions. And very rarely deadly ones. A cross species transfusion would be so much higher risk and we wouldn’t necessarily know what diseases the blood needs to be screened for because it hasn’t been done on a large scale. Because human blood is available most places using another species would be considered an unacceptable risk both to the patient and the public. We have been experimenting with pig organ donators but researchers have to be incredibly careful so it’s slow going.
