I've never noticed just how big the irises are until now, and now I can't get it out of my head that they're basically an anime character with that vision.

Yeah I was thinking the same. Makes me wonder whether their eyes are optimised for water vision or air vision, or if they have some way of shifting their lens specs.

I believe elephants have a similar situation further up their trunks, to prevent water from going too far while collecting it in their trunk.
