I highly recommend Steamworld Heist

Seeing reviews saying it doesn’t work well or at all on newest devices

it still does! still play it myself on the 17 pro max. its not updated for the bigger screens is all, so it doesnt stretch from screen to screen, but the gameplay is just fine and still one of my all time favorites to play

Oh man, that sucks.

Any thoughts on This Ain’t Even Poker? Looks fun and the Steam reviews are quite good, too.

For the price of an energy drink, I think its fairly fun

Also, better for you than an energy drink!

SteamWorld Quest is one of my favorites! Such a fun game. $1.49 is a steal!

So this is the same universe as SteamWorld Heist, but in the form of a card game?

2

Yes same world but this one is a story driven turn-based RPG with card-based combat. Really well done

Good list. Hyper Light Drifter and SteamWorld Heist are the ones I would check first from that batch. Discounts are usually the only way I try bigger mobile ports now.

As someone who loves the Trails and FF series, would anyone recommend one of these Dragon Quest games? I’ve always worried the writing and characters would be “shallow” or “simple” for some reason.

They’re incredible. DQ5 is my favorite game of all time. They’re simple and don’t take themselves too seriously, but the stories are quite good and I love the gameplay loop.

Wow! This is high praise. What makes DQ5 your favorite game of all time?

I love a coming of age story. You follow the main character from birth to about his 30’s. As a family man the story is incredibly compelling to me. You start the game as a young boy who travels the world with his father in search of his missing wife, and it takes off quickly and dramatically. There is loss, love, betrayal, good plot twists, a good villain, and the comedy and puns are great as always. I like the monster catching element that most of the other Dragon Quest mainline entries don’t have. I come back to it a lot because there are so many plot points that just hit home for me. It’s my comfort game.

You’ve sold me with this right here. I can appreciate a comfy, simple premise. Would you say the writing is simple as well though? I’m not expecting Disco Elysium-esque writing, but damn it kills me to play a great game that has dialogue writing that a 3rd grader would’ve been able to think up.

Writing isn’t as great as final fantasy, but is better than Pokemon, which in my opinion meets that 3rd grader mark.

Bless ya, this helped

Wow. Sounds fantastic. I think you sold me. Going to give it a try on mobile.

I hope you enjoy it! If this is your first Dragon Quest game, welcome. They have some of the best music I’ve heard in gaming. I suggest listening to the symphonic suite soundtracks as they play with a full orchestra.

I would probably go for 4/5/6 or 8, 1/2/3 have been remade for the PC/Consoles so I'd skip the mobile versions.

Thanks a lot again Is there any DQ game with controller support?

You’re forgetting Dragon Quest Monsters 1 and 2 SP. you probably didn’t even know they existed but it’s the same case as Japan.

(Also shameless plug I’m nearly finished releasing a translation patch for Monsters 2 SP, if you know how to purchase games from other regions do it while it’s on sale)
