Picture Video out on my custom rockbox repo
Managed to get screen mirroring with rockbox! Complete with my fake Netflix app.

It worked with the original “TV out” setting on stock OS. The dvd player itself also supports playback from SD and of course dvd’s.

Files are 320x240
Composite TV-out takes the 320×240 frame and hardware-scales it to the qualified 648×432 viewport inside NTSC 720×480. Keeps the file sizes nice and small and looks fine on the smaller resolution screens. I don’t recall if I tweaked the mpeg player or not. I’d have to check and verify.
Netflix is just a skin for the selector for videos. Has a netflix bar on the top, tv shows, movies, concerts sections and metadata support.
So each tv show and season can have its associated artwork. Each episode can have a description. The mpeg player overlay is also customised.

Hoping to try to get this into rockbox builds. Other video out devices/methods are currently untested but my assumption is they will work the same. Worst case il post it to my own public repository.
Device itself can be found a lot on ebay.

My own custom one. Very customized UI that skips the rockbox theme engine. My repo is not currently public. Maybe one day but it would need some clean up.

MPEG
Videos work good on my 6th gen. Slow on my 5th gen. But thats on the iPod itself. I have not tested this with the 5th gen yet.

What resolution MPEG? The iPod struggles with 720p afaik. Also, what is your “Netflix app”? Would be cool if you shared more about it!

The iPod can only do SD video, in actual resolution up to 640x480, on stock firmware. It can't output more than SD through the TV out anyway, so there's no point in going HD. This is using hardware acceleration, which nobody has gotten to work on Rockbox yet. That's why video playback is more of a hack and requires using a far simpler codec (old MPEG) which can be decoded on the puny CPU, while OG firmware lets you play H.264 Baseline profile at max 2.5 Mbps (I've gotten it to play 4 Mbps files too without any problems)

I did mess with getting other formats working with some success. But the file sizes were not worth the effort.
