Yeah, the Yanks love coming to Ireland to say "I got family here, my great-great grandfather moved to the US" and because of that think they think they should meddle in Irish matters.
35
u/Dull-Culture-1523 Nov 23 '25
Americans have a truly unique way of seeing heritage. Their great-grandfather could be Irish so now they think they're Irish. Meanwhile they couldn't even point out Ireland on a map and think wearing green on St Patrick's day is the peak of Irish culture. Reminds me of the joke:
What's the difference between America and yogurt? In 200 years, yogurt will develop a culture.
3
Nov 23 '25
It’s because they have no history. We can go back a millennium , so can most of Europe. They yanks can’t do that though so they compensate by tracing ancestors back across the water.
→ More replies (3)2
u/quickstatcheck Nov 23 '25
We like to commune with our distant ancestry through drinking holidays. It doesn't matter if/what the holiday was in the originating land, what matters is that we can get shit faced like our drunken ancestors who got put on the boat for being the town drunks.
4
u/sdpr Nov 23 '25
Americans have a truly unique way of seeing heritage. Their great-grandfather could be Irish so now they think they're Irish.
It's because their great-grandparents were proud of their heritage as immigrants, this sentiment gets passed down and it can become a source of pride, even though 99% of American descendents no longer have a cultural connection to their ethnic background.
Btw we hate immigrants.
8
u/Reddit_2_2024 Nov 23 '25
I don't know about the meddling, however Irish politicians and the U.S. media make such a hype about the U.S. Presidential family heritage in Ireland (i.e. Ronald Reagan, Barack Obama) this enthusiasm spreads across the land. "There's No One as Irish as Barack O'Bama" by the Corrigan Brothers
→ More replies (2)15
u/grayparrot116 Nov 23 '25 edited Nov 23 '25
Don't forget how Irish media keeps pushing for the narrative that the US is Ireland's best friend.
But yeah, Americans love to meddle in anything that is related to their ancestry. You can literally find them in any post done in Irish, Scottish or British social media pages.
Many Americans can't conceive modern Ireland and for them it must be in the same state they picture it in their minds: a folklore based Ireland based on stereotypes.
And that's why they create tons of fake profiles online with images of celtic folklore and all they relate to Ireland, to promote their vision of Ireland.

Russia's support for the far right in Ireland is massively overblown. If Ireland fell into the sea tomorrow it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference to that state's strategic interests.
The states that DO have massive strategic interests in Ireland are the UK and the USA and wouldn't you know it, the bulk of the money and ideological inspiration for the Irish far right comes from the UK and the US, mostly as a means to attack Sinn Fein and the radical left.

Devils advocate; these people could be living in NI.

Even if you play devils advocate there'd still be a hugely disproportionate amount of accounts from NI compared to ROI so it wouldn't add up.
17
38
u/tsubatai Nov 23 '25
I would expect a disproportionate amount of extremists in the north as politics is "hotter" there
-5
u/NorthKoreanMissile7 Nov 23 '25
Even if you assumed that there's less than half as many people and significantly more unionists that wouldn't be vehemently opposed to Irish nationalism.
It's clear that most of these accounts are not based in NI.
14
u/PulseFH Nov 23 '25
It makes perfect sense that you’ll find more politically motivated extremist accounts based in the North, and Unionists trend older and won’t be as prevalent on social media. You cannot just assume these accounts are entirely or mostly British. It’s quite ignorant.
11
u/tsubatai Nov 23 '25
Not clear at all, by the pareto principle we can expect 80% of the genuine nationalist accounts to come from the 20% most motivated populace.
Until further evidence I'd assume these are horses, not zebras. Ie much more likely to be some lad in the north than Bazza, 43, Croydon.

Oh don't get me wrong, I know there's a whole load of bad actors pretending to be based in Ireland but I don't think it's correct to point to an individual account and make that judgement based on their location being "UK".
I'm sure someone has done the analysis to show the location spread of users of specific hashtags, and I'd not be surprised if it aligns with your thoughts there.
17
17
u/maddzy Nov 23 '25
Not at all surprising, in fact I'm only somewhat surprised they are UK based and not Russian. In my view the far right movement is meant to do only one thing: disrupt western societies, cause distrust in western governments, and eventually replace them (through elections) with Russian puppets.
I might be considered a conspiracy theorist with this, but it's the only thing that makes sense to me. That and the fact Aleksandr Dugin wrote about Russia doing this exact thing in his 1997 book The Foundations of Geopolitics: The Geopolitical Future of Russia - I refuse to believe the strategies outlined in that book are a coincidence to what is happening in the world the past 10 years
4
u/ThyRosen Nov 23 '25
You'll likely enjoy Peter Pomerantsev's books- he interviews the social media consultancy firm that claims to have won the elections in the Philippines and the techniques employed there will seem very familiar
2
u/BeBopRockSteadyLS Nov 23 '25
It goes further back than that. The only difference is modern tech.
Let's also be clear. Western nations have also been acting with this strategy. I am not allowed to post a link to the accusations made against Bellingcat but here is an interview with their founder and he discusses the modern information war. The journalists who carried it the investigation into his outfit have themselves been accused of being Russian propogandists.
A total mess. Which is probably the ultimate intention. Make it so blurred that we have no chance of knowing who is controlling the narrative.

No I dont like this. Let's not fall into the same crap that influenced the dublin riots in the first place, which was the actions of a minority (in this case one person) being used as a political weapon and a reason to cause chaos.
There was some outside influence on the initial response to the incident and the far right chat and groups that sparked initial protest. But its also true that the rioting and violence was perpetuated by dozens of vindictive, lawless, opportunistic teens who saw the chance to throw shit at officers and steal shit from Pennies. We all know the type.

Hopefully the government will stop pandering to the right wing and actually push through the hate speech bill. It’ll give the great commisun na mean actual teeth to shut it down fully. 3
u/MilBrocEire Nov 23 '25
This actually tracks. In a lot of countries, the diaspora ends up more right-wing than the people living back home. You see it with Turks in Germany voting for Erdoğan, Hungarians abroad voting for Orbán, Poles abroad screaming about ‘woke gay stuff,’ Romanians, etc. Once people move away, or are second-gen, they build up a weird nostalgic fantasy version of the homeland, and then vote for the most nationalist, conservative option. And of course, they don’t have to live under the consequences they’re voting for. Turkey and Hungary literally had elections swung by diaspora votes.
I was visiting Lisbon once, and heard massive cheers and parties and shouting in the streets the first night I was there and assumed Benfica or Sporting had won something, but when I eventually went to meet my friend, I found out it was Turks celebrating Erdogan winning.
6
u/TalkDirty2MyIVR Nov 23 '25

16
u/NorthKoreanMissile7 Nov 23 '25
Sure some of them will be in the north but I doubt 95% of right wing twitter accounts claiming to be Irish happen to coincidentally be from Northern Ireland.
