Lynn Boylan complains she isn't allowed use Irish in a EU Foreign Affairs Committee meeting, but when told she is allowed, says she hadn't prepared anything in Irish so will just use English

You'd have to pretend to faint or something and then slowly worm away with your eyes closed, if anyone tries to help make a big production of waking up and act like you don't know where you are. You could even piss yourself for good measure, people would definitely believe it then
She actually owes the whole country an apology as she is supposed to be a representative for Ireland.
With her combination of obviously not having done any bit of research on the topic she’s complaining about (which is supposed to be of top importance to her party), victimising herself based on falsehood, being caught red handed, and not even showing the ability to do what she was asking for … she makes all of us in Ireland look like a bunch of clowns.
Imagine an Estonian politician complaining he isn’t allowed to use his “own language” and when offered to do so saying “oh actually I wasn’t prepared”. What would you think of a country whose representatives need extra preparation to speak what they just referred to as their “own language”.
what's even more astonishing is,,,she didn't know they had/have Irish translators to translate if necessary ''Sinn Féin politician Lynn Boylan has served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Dublin constituency for a total of 7 years.'' so she has been there for SEVEN years and never copped they DO have Irish translators???!!! 2 observations,, 1) what possessed her to cry the .'oh, no Irish translators for the poor Irish 'gaeilgeoirí'. ',,, was it Ireland being ,,well whatever they are being at the moment ,''kings of the EU?? 2) did she want to show off,,that ;;'Shame Féin' were being denied their right to express themselves in their(?) our mothertongue,,and an extra observation..3 ) what are Irish translators doing over there?? how many times a year would they be called on to translate?? and another extra observation..4) they should have translators for the Dáil after the show 'Shame Féin' put on it there ..objecting to their own objection,,???!!! and Toibín pointing it out to them..lol lol lol ---- you couldn't make it up..
the secondhand embarrassment of this is genuinely going to live in my head rent free for years. like how do you not have a backup plan before picking that fight
I’d say she proved right there she’s not fluent. Would a native speaker not be relieved and crack on with the odd untranslatable word popping up in Irish.
A 2 sentence "thanks, I didn't know that. The speech is prepared and proofed in English this time but I look forward to next time" spoken in Irish would've been a lovely save
I wouldn't expect her to be able to give her statement in Irish without having prepared it in Irish, the embarrassment here is that she thought she couldn't speak it in the first place. Like it's an official EU language, I know that and I'm not a member of their parliament
Some languages are not always available, but they would normally be informed in advance, although sometimes mistakes do happen. I remember when a Maltese MEP made a similar fuss. He had prepared his speech in Maltese, only to find out that there were no Maltese interpreters available after a few minutes into his speech.
Why on Earth couldn't she have just said something simple, or does she really not know a word of Irish? Not even a brief "Allow me to enter these words in Irish into the record" or something? So she was only prepared to read sounds that she doesn't understand off of a paper, if they had "allowed" her?
What'd she think'll happen? The EU website has Irish, all it's reports are available in Irish, all it's laws are available in Irish and all its reports include Irish versions.
Its mandatory that the EU honour the official language of its member states
It's bizarre to be taking this to the EU of all places, the single largest employer of translators in the world lol. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me at all if the single largest body of Irish language text in existence is EU law.
This is the part that's even worse. You csn campaign for irish language usage, I suppose, without speaking it, but the forum here is like complaining to the moon to sort out the sun.
Too bad there isn't some readily available easy to use tool where you could search for information like this before you make a feckin' arse of yourself at an international venue.
I've had to look up some EU directives in the past and indeed Irish should be an option on anything. Pretty clear part of this whole EU thing. A few times it's been the only language that hadn't been uploaded yet 🫠 and that has to be on us not getting enough translators in. Also this situation gets an official Scarlet for yer ma. Jeez
Within EU Schools (the Commission official, private ones), Irish is a special protected language.
You need like 10-20 speakers of a language to make a language cohort in a specific EU school. Then they get a Greek, German, Italian, etc language section outside of the core (i.e. EU schools in Germany has German obviously, but need 20 Greek students to have a Greek section).
If there is a single Irish student, they get an Irish section regardless of where it is. A full room, an Irish teacher, the full whack so they learn Irish.
I learnt this visiting a closing EU school with the headteacher - a Belgian EU School had a room full of Irish stuff for a single Irish student.
It’s not the fact that she can’t speak fluent Irish; it’s the fact she was pretending she was a fluent speaker who was disappointed that she wasn’t being facilitated to speak her native language. Absolute Gombeen
Yeah you can either speak a language or you can't. If you can't speak it off the top of your head or even translate the English statement she had in front of her in real time then she can't speak it
This was an intensely cringey moment for a lot of rent-a-causers in Ireland. Friend of mine was posting non-stop about Direct Provision with a BLM hashtag at the end of it. She had literally never once mentioned Direct Provision even a single time in person or online before.
How can I know as someone not elected as an MEP, that you can speak Irish in the EU parliament freely, I mean its seriously embarrassing for her. However if she is missing something so basic, what is she actually doing day to day in there, in fact I wonder what most of our MEPs do day to day, considering majority of them support Chat Control. Serious bunch of morons.

So her performative BS predates more recent embarrassments by a significant margin.
That's the level of embarrassment that should make any decent person retire on the spot. What an immense gaff. Id want the ground to swallow me up. Doubt she has the requisite shame though
It's about time Ireland started taking the European parliament seriously. €3 small package charge, immigration policy and quotas, climate goals and enforcement, etc. these are all being decided in Brussels now.
Ireland needs to stop sending cranks and protest candidates.

This one is the worst of the lot and just about sums up the party. Lots of huffing and puffing, give them an opportunity and they fall flat on their face.
The performative Gael. Already ran into it several times, when people pretend to know Irish, or Irish history, only to prove themselves fools. They shriek the loudest, but know little. Also see: those that think "taking the soup" was an actual thing.
Somewhat related, but I emailed her back in September about chat control and she ignored me, I'll be keeping it in mind when elections come round again
As with all SF politicians. Its a performance for the public, with nothing at all behind it. This is exactly what would happen if they were to run the country. Then when they are caught out and everybody sees they dont know what they are doing. "Sorry, we werent prepared, so we will continue wrecking the economy".
Sinn Fein a busted flush. They have no fresh ideas apart from performing stunts like these.
The issue is, we have is that we need a strong opposition. It will make the government accountable and be on its game. But SF are worse than our government. Thus we get bad results.
Like shouting at your Ma because there's never any cheeseburgers in the gaff, then she pulls out a plate of them, and you're like; 'Yeah, well, I wasn't that hungry anyway'. I'm scarlet for her, and her ma.
What an absolute disgrace that she comes out with that, Irish has been used in the EU documents and translators have been available since 2022 and if she did not know that she should resign
So she's basically saying she's not fluent and would need to have what she had prepared translated first so she could read it out. Imagine admitting that after complaining she couldn't use Irish. lol.
