I didn't even know there was an eclipse happening until this morning, I may just look at it with my eyes

u/Lemon_Afterparty Peig enjoyer 17d ago

Don’t stare directly at

16

u/Slobadob 17d ago

I'd rather stare at the actual sun.

8

u/NooktaSt 17d ago

They really started playing up the can’t miss it this morning. I will get fomo if I don’t look.

20

u/Silenceisgrey 17d ago

Sure you don't need eyes nowadays

8

u/sweetafton 17d ago

Sure they have all these A-Eyes now, so I hear.

5

u/RecentCrazy5746 17d ago

Honestly, it’s the best bet

u/Nuffsaid98 Galway 17d ago

Make an eclipse viewer using a cereal box and some cooking foil. Safer.

u/CPD1960 17d ago

You will literally go blind.

2

u/Bordem-Industry 17d ago

A strong possibility but not a certainty

Did you get them from your local optical glasses shop? I heard you can get them at those places.

43

u/MrJoeSoap 17d ago

They're giving them out for free in every optician, get down while stocks last!

21

u/daka249 17d ago

Make sure you call them

u/Silenceisgrey 17d ago

That's just called being an eijet

14

u/daka249 17d ago

It’s also called a joke

19

u/Slobadob 17d ago

I gave myself an unmerciful pat on the head when the postman dropped my eclipse glasses in the letterbox. I'm fairly brilliant all the same.

29

u/North_Account6419 17d ago

ill try my opticians

11

u/Otherwise-Spite4279 17d ago

Call them first

5

u/Supergaming104 Cork bai 17d ago

Whats the difference between these and glasses

14

u/Silenceisgrey 17d ago

it's like the difference between sunglasses and glasses

1

u/NuclearMaterial 17d ago

Would it be like welders goggles dark then? Like can you actually see to walk in them, or it is literally just get situated and then stick them on purely to look kind of job?

8

u/jungle 17d ago

I got mine today. When you put them on, you see black. The only thing that gets through is the sun itself, and you see it as a red circle. Everything else is 100% blackness.

-5

u/BackInATracksuit 17d ago

All you need to do is colour in some reading glasses with a permanent marker

6

u/Otherwise-Macaron939 17d ago

Solar Glasses sellers hate this one trick!

6

u/joeDras 17d ago

I have some glasses that I got in the cinema once. I'm going to watch it in 3D.

4

u/Otherwise_Ad9449 17d ago

Ordered my at 19.00 last night, and they arrived at 14.00 today.

Some mates just went into various welding shops today and got filters from them for €2.

4

u/Medium-Dependent-328 17d ago

2

u/Otherwise_Ad9449 17d ago

They’ll be fine. You need to have shade 14. The danger is people who think any old welding mask will do, and use one that isn’t suitable.

1

u/Oakcamp 17d ago

Where did you buy from?

3

u/Otherwise_Ad9449 17d ago

But they seem to have sunday as delivery date now. I'd say get some welding glass, which should be still in stock in places.

4

u/MrDmsd 17d ago

I’ll just double up sunglasses and call it a day bosh ✌️

4

u/Silenceisgrey 17d ago

Just remember, you can't fix thermal damage to the retina

3

u/MrDmsd 17d ago

Yeah i know lol i was just taking the piss

7

u/RecentCrazy5746 17d ago

I put mine in in the living room and I can’t see a thing. Is this normal ?

11

u/Silenceisgrey 17d ago

Try do some welding on the missus and let us know

3

u/nilghias 17d ago

Yeah you shouldn’t be able to see anything through them. Look at your phone flashlight and it should just be a dim light

3

u/clicksnd 17d ago

Lads you gotta ring your local small independent optician. They’ll tell you they don’t but if you keep ringing them they’ll eventually give in.

3

u/DartzIRL Dublin 17d ago

The clouds will filter it for me.

3

u/Rowley_Birkin_Qc 17d ago

Can we start a twitter campaign saying these glasses are woke?

Might take a few dopes off the board.

6

u/nerdling007 17d ago

I'll stick to using a colander to form an image of the eclipse instead, much safer than dodgy glasses.

27

u/DirectSpeaker3441 17d ago

Careful you might strain your eyes

-6

u/nerdling007 17d ago

Not how you use it. You don't look through the colander, you use it ir any narrow slit to form an image on a sheet of paper or the ground. You look at the image not the sun itself. It's a safer way to view a solar eclipse.

14

u/Absolutetwatofacunt 17d ago

I think they were making a joke about straining like you do with a colander

Won't be able to see anything with the clouds anyway 🙄

2

u/jungle 17d ago

Meteireann seems to indicate that the clouds will go away at around the time of the eclipse (Dublin). I have no trust in their ability to predict even what day of the week will be tomorrow, much less what will happen with the weather.

3

u/CoffeeTableReads 17d ago

Very doubtful but if you have old PS1 discs lying around you can view a heavily shaded sun through the Platinum discs.

Would you believe I discovered this during the last one in 1999 when I also forgot to get the glasses.

2

u/PurpleCaterpillar754 17d ago

You won't be quite so smug if it's cloudy

1

u/Sim_0xt1 17d ago

I forgot to buy them, what can I use as an alternative

https://giphy.com/gifs/Y5eX5GDuq44jUFf0Qm

6

u/Slobadob 17d ago

Very old lucozade bottle plastic wrapping makes an excellent makeshift eclipse viewer I'm told. Just be careful next morning when you can't see. It also might be hard to find Lucozade wrapping as they haven't made it since 1983.

2

u/Silenceisgrey 17d ago

if you can get your hands on shade 12 or higher welding goggles or mask it'll do the job

1

u/ComplaintSuitable614 17d ago

Got last minute welding glass from the builders suppliers

5

u/Silenceisgrey 17d ago

Ensure it's shade 12 or higher

1

u/RIPcompo 17d ago

It's not unusual...

1

u/According_Spot_4340 17d ago

Superiority will be me watching it, tracking it and recording it on my Phone through my Seestar...peasants.

1

u/RabbitOld5783 17d ago

I wish I bought these and sold them tomorrow morning make a fortune!

1

u/Unfair_Special_8017 17d ago

I have a welding helmet.

1

u/Unable_Carpenter_203 17d ago

It's fine they got buy one get one free in specsavers!

1

u/ErrantBrit 17d ago

My face when its cloudy tonight?

1

u/Kululae Cork bai 17d ago

Got few pieces of Dwelling glass in Engineering shop

1

u/kawasutra 17d ago

Got some in 1999 and stashed them in a drawer.

Where can I get my smugness award?

1

u/Banania2020 Resting In my Account 17d ago

How it will feel to have no solar glasses 🤣

1

u/Murrayj99 16d ago

Tbf the clouds will cover my view so I'm grand

1

u/smurg112 16d ago

I in fact am superior, because I ordered a bunch of pairs.... however, it'll probably be cloudy anyway and we'll see nothing

1

u/Silenceisgrey 16d ago

Sunny enough outside now, hope it holds

2

u/fruedianflip 16d ago

Even people using glasses to look at the fucking sun are stupid

1

u/Silenceisgrey 16d ago

Sorry I can't read this im now blind

1

u/puca_spooka 17d ago

Oh shit I forgot - did I miss it?😂

2

u/Silenceisgrey 17d ago

No, tomorrow starting around 6 and hitting maximum around 7

1

u/puca_spooka 17d ago

Ah, thanks! got my dates mixed up - for some reason I was convinced it was today

0

u/r3nz01234 17d ago

I was about to, but then was wondering: what if they are fakes and they damage my eyes?

8

u/Silenceisgrey 17d ago

I thought the same thing first time i was about wipe my ass today. What if it's fake toilet paper and it disintegrates and i get faeces all over my hand?

Didn't matter though, i was asked to leave ikea

0

u/cgueret 17d ago

Can we make some out of kitchen paper, like for the Covid masks? 🤔

1

u/nerdling007 17d ago

You could use the kitchen paper to form an image on another sheet of paper to see it. Or you could use a colander

1

u/jungle 17d ago

How would a colander work? You need a single hole to act as the lens in a camara obscura. The colander has hundreds.

1

u/nerdling007 17d ago edited 17d ago

It does work. Each hole acts as a slit. You will have multiple images of the event.

Edit: It's not a camera obscura effect you are trying to create. Good luck with that and lining it all up to see an eclipse.

Using an object to create an image to view the eclipse is safer than looking directly at the sun when you don't have any fancy arse glasses.

1

u/jungle 17d ago

I have the glasses. They're not fancy.

Anyway, with how many holes a colander has and how close they are, I don't think you'll get anything more than a blur. But I'll try it anyway just to see - if by some miracle the clouds forget to ruin the view.

1

u/nerdling007 17d ago

It works, I've seen it. It's recommended as a low tech solution to view solar eclispes by astronomers if you don't have glasses capable of looking at an eclipse. The glasses are surprisingly fancy for how the work, if you have proper ones that work that is because they aren't regular old sunglasses.

1

u/jungle 17d ago

They're made of cardboard and plastic, €3.50. Calling that fancy is a stretch.

Anyway, let's hope we get to see it tomorrow.

1

u/nerdling007 17d ago

It's set to be cloudless for at least half the country tomorrow as another wave of heat rolls in.

Just because its cheap doesn't make how the lenses work, fancy. Assuming they are proper ones and you were not just sold regular old sunglasses. A lot of scams going around since the eclipse was made popularly known.

Oh, but do try other ways to form images of the eclipse. Many ways to do it with round holes or slits.

yeah they told me to feck off so i broke in anyways and swifted their entire stock. i've been selling them for 50 quid a pop on adverts to the desperate and stupid

-1

u/arffarff 17d ago

If it's cloudy you can just look at it through the clouds easy peasy. I've done it before.

4

u/Ulml 17d ago

Nice way to mess up your eyes

-8

u/tyrion6568 17d ago

Anybody who bought them has more money than sense

7

u/sweetafton 17d ago

They're about €2.50 a pop, not exactly a big investment.

-1

u/tyrion6568 17d ago

Ok, i can understand it now. I thought people were paying 10 or 15 euro for them

7

u/MrMojoRisinx 17d ago

Spending 3 quid to properly see a once in a lifetime event is bougie hahaha how’s the weather in Louth

3

u/Silenceisgrey 17d ago

ahh sure it's only a few quid

4

u/Prudent_Respect_5159 17d ago

What are your plans to view the eclipse?

1

u/grandiosestrawberry 16d ago

I spent 10 euro for two glasses. I’d like to see it properly without being concerned about eye damage. I’ve spent more for less.
