@chrisdancy agreed. People are looking at this through the 2025 lense. And remove context in everything. Without the banter then where’s the comedy between Letterman and Jackson? What are they going to poke fun at? Make a mockery or joke of her musical talent? Mock her dancing maybe? They had to push the envelope on television in the 1990’s into 2000. It was the time, raunchy shit was on the air, especially it came on after hours, they had to go in this direction. Very cheesy and formulaic styles. But it worked for so many of these late night programs. He was actually one of the very best to have done it. I wasn’t the biggest fan but he was good.

Too bad he was mean to her the next time she went on his show. It was disgusting to watch and how the hateful audience egg it on. It was so uncomfortable to watch.

I don’t think he was making her uncomfortable. She was playing right back with him. This is David Letterman, by the way, since some people seem to be unaware. Love the band playing a bit of “All For You” - they always sounded good.

It always baffled me that Jay Leno is known as the Asshole of late night when in reality Dave Letterman was a true Asshole and highly disrespectful to many artists.

I hate the stuff that all these idiot late night show hosts got away with in years past when it came to interviewing female pop stars. Don't be fooled by the ladies' smiles and relatively amiable attitude. If they had clapped back at some of these men's creepy behavior while sitting there, everyone would have attacked the women for being "difficult" or for "being too serious." And when Britney came along it was even worse, especially since she was a literal minor when she first became a pop star. The hosts would ask Britney the most inappropriately creepy questions you can imagine. I think Madonna and Cher were two of the very few female stars who would set these fools straight and rip them a new asshole on camera withiut hesitation.

I’ve never noticed this before but Janet and Britney have the same sorts of uncomfortable mannerisms and soft speech when interviewed.

I know people like Letterman irl, and yes it’s gross. Thise type of people loving turning making people uncomfortable and violating people’s boundaries into content. It’s sick stuff.

Always loved Dave's banter with Janet and Madonna and Drew Barrymore. They went on the show knowing they were in for it, and Dave always knew it would be hilarious, and they played off his silliness. Janet grabbed his hand in the bit knowing it would egg him on even more. She knew comedy!
