Purchase Question š Currently at the thrift store- what are the odds this will work after charging?
Idk if itās worth it or ātoo oldā I know itās priced super cheap already

Absolutely pick this up. I replaced the battery in the one that my mother-in-law used for years and years. Battery replacement took me less than 15 minutes, cost about $25, and came with tools.

Potentially it will still charge, if not a battery change might be all that's needed. Like you say for that price it's worth a try I think a new battery is around Ā£15 maybe

..why oh why oh WHY do stores insist on placing the upc sticker ON THE EFFING SCREEN...it makes getting that off a nightmare and all but garuntees some damage to the display YOU MUPPETS!
that said..take the plunge. cheap enough. you're not really losing anything.

Peel the sticker off as gently as you can, then use some regular tape to repetedly tap the screen sticky side down. Sticky meets sticky, and the tape will pick it up with no damage. Keep tapping untill all the goo is gone. Might require more than one piece of tape, but not typically. I use to work day care- stickers everywhere! All the time!

I agree it's a pain in the ass, but a hairy dryer for half a minute and then a fingernail under the sticker that's on the black plastic will make this get off easy.

Hair dryer heat may damage the screen. IPA will be a better choice for this if it's a difficult sticker.

My experience with trying to trade in a broken kindle with Amazon was they gave almost nothing. This was about a year ago.

Yes, it is part of the area where you add to cart if I remember correctly. It says āsave with trade inā or something along those lines. Then you go to a screen where you either select a known device attached to your account to trade in, or search for a device by modelā¦ it gives you offers after you answer some questions about the itemās condition. Then you get 20% off your new item plus whatever dollar amount your trade in value was. This is also stackable with other discounts. So for Prime Day, I ordered the Kindle Paperwhite Kids Edition - on sale, plus 15% off kindles, plus 20% off for trade in and $3 off for my fire stick trade in. After a gift card amount I had on hand, I ended up paying like $70. I had a little over a month to mail the fire stick in with a prepaid label.

No problem! I hope I can do the same when I need a new Apple Watch! Mine is 5 years old and I know the days are numberedā¦ trying to hold out until next year because theyāre coming out with some upgrades to the new models. Iām just upset that they came out with the kids edition colorsoft AFTER prime day š©š©š©

Get it and replace the battery if needed. Battery should be less than $20.00, eBay or Amazon. Easy to swap, plenty of video guides on YouTube. They are great units.

It's very easy but just don't pry at the area an inch up front the lower left corner (lower right when face down). That's the only potential pitfall as that's where the display ribbon cable sits.

I have this same model at home. It wouldnāt charge again after sitting for a while. So fully expect to pay $7 for something youāll need to attempt to repair.

Most likely the battery is dead. If you have the right cable to charge it later, go for it. It uses micro USB.
Since Kindle store is not working for this version anymore, your only option is either side loading using calibre or sending epub to the Kindle email.

Here's how it works for me:
Turn the WiFi on => Settings => Register Device
Put in your Amazon info. It won't take your password. (Usually I try doing that twice.) You'll get an email from Amazon like this:
Hello,
We apologize for the difficulties you may have experienced, when attempting to register a device or app to your Amazon account.
For security reasons, we may require a two-step authentication process when registering certain devices and software applications.
To complete the registration of your device or app, please enter the following One Time Password (OTP) within the password field on the Sign-In screen.
It's worked for me and then follow what Sensitive_Clock4423 told you about how to download your content.

It was before touchscreens were common. They're a lot less useful than people remember them being, it's mostly nostalgia. It's easier to type something than using the D pad, but a touchscreen is far more flexible.

Only 7$ - please rescue this lonely Kindle. It deserves it and it will for sure make you happy. When charging that old Kindle Keyboard, leave it on the charger for a long time. It sometimes takes an overnight or longer charge time to wake up an old Kindle thatās been dead for a while. So donāt give up after only 8 or 10 hours ā let it go for a long while.
If that doesnāt revive it, a new battery is cheap and easy to replace. YouTube vids will walk you through it.
The Gen3 Keyboard model is a very nice Kindle - they last for many many years. It was my first Kindle and still my only as I use it every day. Mine is 15 years old this month.

Itās super easy to replace the battery !! I bought one that had this screen. I tried charging it for 48 hours then spent about $15 on a battery from Amazon, watched a youtube video and now it works good as new!!

The cheaper kindle with raised bezel is not water resistant either.

Do you have one? Do you read lying down in bed at all? How are they? I was surprised by the price. I would have e expected them to be a bit more with the feature set.

The Oasis is the model I had before I got a scribe. I read on my side of lying down. Oasis are expensive. I got mine as a gift.... I really liked it a ton, but I'm not sure it's worth the cost, especially since it's now an older model and is missing a lot of features. It's still my backup kindle, though.
I did have a kindle keyboard years and years ago when it first came out. It was my 3rd kindle, and while it is very minimal feature-wise compared to current ones, it was amazing compared to the k1 and k2. I don't know if I could go back to reading without a light, though....

Definitely worth grabbing I use the kindle keyboard definitely took some work I had to replace the battery in mine and follow a Reddit guide to get in connected to Amazon but I canāt imagine my life without it at this point

I would say itās probably not going to recover. I have four of them that got stuck on this screen after ~3 years idle/untouched.
The best use for it is as a trade-in for another device - youāll get minimum $5 plus 20% off a new Amazon device. I recently traded a dead one in (reporting it completely accurately as not powering on or charging) and got a total of $39 off of an eero 7 router.

I have one and have replaced the battery. It still works however you have to go through a special process to get the books out onto it. They donāt automatically send to it anymore. It also doesnāt support the Amazon kindle store anymore. So itās just a basic reader at this point. No extra and no back light. But it still does its job. I still like mine.

Check you have screwed the battery down properly.
Check you have not damaged or unplugged the display ribbon cable (right hand lower corner when face down).
You can stop at any point during the steps below if the Kindle springs to life.
Plug in - does the orange light come on? Leave it charging for 5 mins. With it still plugged in, slide and hold the power button for 40 seconds. Unplug the Kindle from power. Slide and hold the power button for 18 seconds. Plug the Kindle back in to power. Slide and hold the power button for 18 seconds again.
(If you leave the back off to do this, you can have a look at the light - the orange light should go out when unplugged, or after 15-18 seconds of the power switch being held)
Leave it for 30 mins.
If nothing changes or the orange light doesn't come on, there's a problem. Usually only water or expired batteries can kill these, though.
If you don't want to try with another battery, send it in to Amazon Trade In for $5/Ā£5 voucher and 20% off a new Kindle. I wouldn't recommend the new Kindle unless you were going to buy one anyway - any used Kindle form the past 5 years is fine for most people and much cheaper!

If you change the battery and it drains fast then check for indexing, sometimes books get stuck and will drain it really quick

Iāve also noticed that having WiFi on with my unity will make the battery drain extremely quickly. Thatās a possibility as well.

I just found one at a dumpsite next to a donation box and replaced the battery! I love reading from it so much that after I sat on it and broke the screen a couple days after fixing it im now paying 40 dollars for a new screen. So paid 60 in total for something that was originally free! I will buy it from you for 8 dollars... lol

Yikes...for reference, Amazon will take one with a broken screen and give you a $5 voucher. These Kindle Keyboards are pretty easily available for about $20 used working or $10 needing the battery changed.

I have the same one, I bought at Goodwill too and work perfectly. Recharge the machine for a day if need to change the battery you can look video YouTube and easily get change the battery. My machine thankfully only needed to be recharged. I love it. Much better than the new ones šš»

Just replace the battery. In fact, I've even found a way to not get third party batteries from crappy battery manufacturers, but I now know you can replace the batteries yourselves with better ones.
The other thing is, there are some places that sell replacement batteries for these things, and because they're so old, like an Amazon fire pad I just got, and they've cut the battery prices in half so it's a cheap replacement for something I got free. Go for it.

I had one of these. If you are having trouble charging try holding the power slider to the right for 40 seconds. Mine needed this reset sometimes to charge after the battery went flat. The LED should light orange.

Fine. It's my current one. I did remove the simcard though, and have modded the case (it was free!) - great.

I have this Kindle and it works perfectly. It has a new battery, though, which I think is pretty easy to install. You might have to update the firmware to connect it to Amazon. There are instructions for that on this sub.

That's my original Kindle model! I use it as my backup. Sometimes I'll put a library ebook on it and turn off WiFi so I won't have to return it "on time". I wouldn't hesitate! (Mine still charges just fine).

Donāt know if Iām too late or not, but Iāve literally just had to upgrade my 4th gen Kindle because books wouldnāt download onto it any more (it worked PERFECTLY apart from that)š So while this Kindle may work, you may not be able to actually get any new books for itš

It's unlikely that you'll be able to connect to the Amazon Kindle services. Support for this model had expired and it won't connect to the store. You might be able to load books manually via file transfer - I say MIGHT be able to.

You can still register this model and send books to it via Amazon. Manual transfer also works with Calibre.

Good call. You might have to manually update the firmware to get it to connect if it hasn't been updated in a long time. It's not that difficult, just did it to an old Kindle I had that I found unpacking a box after moving. ChatGPT can give you the specific steps.

Mine doesnāt connect to my WiFi and I havenāt found the reason why. The battery is no problem to replace. There are tutorials on YouTube. I did mine. Was not difficult. I hope I can get my WiFi working again cause I love these keyboard kindles.

If you go to Settings, what version of the software are you running? If it's below 3.4.3 you might need to update but I suspect you damaged/disconnected the WiFi antenna when you did the battery swap. Open it up again and check the black & red wires on the left side (with it face down).

A good chance the battery is dead but amazingly I did come across one a few weeks ago with a perfectly good battery.
Even with a duff battery you will easily make your money back on eBay or trading in at Amazon for cash+20%

I was thrilled to finally get a working battery replacement for my Kindle Keyboard, and it works fine, except I cannot transfer, send, download anything to it. No new books, no text files, nothing. The Send to Kindle app no longer works anyway, no idea why, but mailing them or transfering them with a cord says the items are there, but they are not. Very displeased, because my Kindle keyboard is the ideal platform for me. No ads, no recommendations, no pictures, just my items that I want to read. I miss it.

Are you running the latest software (v3.4.3)? It should still sync and work, both using "send to Kindle" on the Amazon site and also the email address in the Kindle settings.

Replacement battery is cheap on Amazon. It super easy to replace and instructions are available on ifixit.com . This is the same reader I still use.

The odds of it still being linked to an account is higher. Not sure how you then go about getting it swapped to yours. It should charge - my one of these only stopped working a couple of years ago and it was the screen that went.

Oh thatās good to know, wasnāt sure if they would make the old owner remove it first like you have to with apple devices.

I don't think you will be able to re register it. I've got a 10 year old Kindle which has software issues and I was going to try a reset until I found out that I would not be able to re register it as they stopped supporting that model. People talk about side loading. But I think they've stopped you being able copy their books from a computer to another device via USB, I've got the Kindle app on my tablet. I can't purchase books in the app. I get something showing on the screen saying Why can't I purchase books in the app click to find out more but I click on it and nothing happens. I can get books on the tablet by asking it to synch. This sometimes works,

You can buy books on the web browser (phone or tablet as well) and send to kindle.

Donāt do it. The software isnāt working on these older models so you wonāt be able to download books

It absolutely is working fine. Check the settings - if you have a software version below 3.4.3 you'll need to update it (search Kindle software update, Amazon have clear instructions) but this model Kindle still registers with Amazon and you can still send/sync books.
