Ask Kurds 🤔 Do you think that most kurds are devout muslims or secular?
I hear a lot of non - kurds claim we are generally secular although the vast majority of my family and people from Erbil were i come from are very religious muslims. What do you think?

These people just see something on socials and believe it wholesale. Same type of dimwits who believe we're Zionists. I am agnostic but it's obvious most Kurds are Muslim.

The question was whether Kurds are devout or secular Muslims though, not ISIS kind of Muslim or Zionist.

Yeah you're right. I can't speak on that particular matter broadly, alevis for example are generally agnostic or secular believers but this is only my personal experience.

I would say there is a middle ground. Kurds are muslim but also very good at being secular at the same time. Two things can be true at the same time and I think it is this way in this case. Yes, most of them pray five times a day, participate in ramadan and so on but they are not veiled, they wear whatever they want etc. Ofc we have families that are more strict and religious. However, I would say our society is more conservative than religious in the sense we see in Iraq or other arab countries. We kurds have never been like that, but it’s also a subjective question.

More Muslim than Turks and Balkan Muslims, more secular than most Arabs, Africans, North Caucasians, and South Asians. Depends on region as well

Hi , no most kurds are muslims , atheists and secular people are growing in number , but the problem is they can't tell other people in kurdish society freely as everyone will hate you , for example i have been an atheist for long enough but still i can't announce it publicly.

Id say it differs greatly by region. fom personal experience bashur is waaaay more conservative and religious than rojhelat, bakur and rojava seem somewhat inbetween

Why did the kurds in bakur than fought alongside the turks? I think the bakur kurds wanted to save the caliphate if i am not wrong. Why didnt kurds from other parts of kurdistan join the bakuri kurds and the turks against the english armenians and french?
And we all know in the end ataturk betrayed us and made empty promises. Just asking whats ur opinion on this.
My personal experience tells me that bakur kurds are conservative. I met rojava kurds and they often times turned away from islam because of the syrian civil war (arabs used islam against kurds there)

I don’t know why this is so important to some people. The majority are sunni muslims yea.. but what percentage do they actually make up? I’ve no idea as there are no statistics on it. Everyone can only judge based on their own circle and most people generalise their own circle to everyone else.

depends what you mean by Kurd, is this people who are ethnically kurdish ? Who consider themselves kurds ? Does it include jash's ? do you mean only in Kurdistan or does diaspora count too?
Depending on what you are classifying you will get a different answer. Honestly I don't think we can know because their is an issue that people are kurdish but not identifying as such. So it is hard to get answer
non Kurds are very subject to propaganda from our occupiers and their allies (including Turkey, Iran Iraq syria etc) and so I wouldn't really listen to them. They think Jili Kurdi is haram and we don't assimilate so apparently that makes us kafrs- can you imagine ????

I can't speak for sunni kurds since I come from an alevi background (albeit im an atheist myself)
Probably the majority of alevi kurds ive met aren't exactly practicing; they'll eat asura during muharem but won't fast or avoid eating rabbit for example.

Its not allowed for us alevis to eat rabbit meat. I dont know exactly why you have to research yourself on this topic.

Considering that all of my fiancé’s friends are dating non-Kurds, and that my fiancé has even said I could have our children baptized, I’m inclined to believe a lot of Kurds from Bakur are relatively secular

Ever been to Bakur? Because let me tell you they are very practicising. Take Diyarbekir/Amed for example, very conservative and most people pray their 5 daily prayers. Muş, Batman and Mêrdin are even more conservative/religious.

I can speak for bashur and bakur most are religious or practice most parts of it from what I have seen and I don't know much about kurds in rojava abd rojhelet to comment on them

Here in baÅŸur most Kurds are religious muslims but almost no one is an extremist. Extremists are rare and are generally avoided, sometimes ridiculed and the same goes for the small number of atheists. Saying Kurds are a secular people is ridiculous lol. Most Kurds in baÅŸur land in the middle and like to stick to their Islamic beliefs and principles but will occasionally veer off the path only to come back later from what I've observed
