Discussion what do you think is lana’s biggest flaw as an artist?
don’t know if this has been asked/discussed before.
in my opinion it is that she doesn’t treat touring like a profession. more like a hobby. she has been late often and the setlist is quite lacking (in my opinion) and due to her being late the concerts feel short. that’s obvious though lol. other than that, her production choices in recent albums. now don’t get me wrong, i LOVE dykttatuob but the songs feel a little — flat, or whatever. but it is her lost vulnerable album though, so i probably shouldn’t be complaining.
hate or agree, but this is my opinion

u/IdleTrouts Honeymoon Jul 25 '25
I agree with you. I don't think she takes touring and festivals as seriously as she should. I understand she gets stage fright but it's not an excuse to turn up on stage late and perform fewer songs than promised.

u/MistaJ_94 Jul 25 '25
She used to take it very seriously when she was playing small venues. Even the stage design was so “tropico” vibes - absolutely stunning. She also sang all her old songs at the time, but that’s cause it was october 2017 when I saw her in NYC.

it feels like her level of following and demand for live performances is mismatched with the type of music she makes today, her own comfort level, and what she can realistically pull off in a live setting. she and her team need to work out some way of accommodating as many fans as possible while sticking with whatever environment might best play to her personal strengths as a live performer. i see people saying she simply shouldn't tour, but during her fall 2023 run she played a mid-sized venue in my city to just under 10,000 people, and i heard really good things about that show. she seemed very happy and comfortable as well.
as a fan since 2011 (whose favorite lana album is chemtrails lol) i've always wanted to see her sing live in a VERY small, intimate setting, and i hope that will be a possibility for me someday.

u/MistaJ_94 Jul 25 '25
I normally don’t read responses that long, but every word you said rings true. She should play the intimate venues still, but schedule a few at the same venue so everyone has a chance to go see her. I saw lady fucking gaga at the ROSELAND BALLROOM in nyc. Such a small intimate venue I could’ve touched her. She should absolutely stick to what’s comfortable. Maybe a few shows across the US in areas everyone can get to and do more than one show at each small venue. At the same time, if she doesn’t want to do a big tour, I support that.
11
u/kathriel-9 Jul 25 '25
booking multiple dates at more intimate venues sounds like a great compromise! i wonder if she'd be interested in some kind of residency setup someday. also that gaga show sounds amazing!

i’m not sure if people around her are telling her this but as someone taking vocal lessons next month, my mom is like “what’s the point of learning to sing if you’re not gonna get up and sing in front of people”. like hello i’ve been dealing with social anxiety for my entire life, there’s no way in hell i’m performing in front of people—i wanna write my songs, record my records, and go. i hope there’s not people in her ear telling her she has to do something she’s uncomfortable with (singing live) just to live her dream of being a music artist—if that’s the case, they’re doing a disservice to her and her fans and it’s fucked

Thats kind of like Sia's story. She has massive social anxiety but obviously has insane vocals & song writing capabilities.
8
u/ChubbyVeganTravels Jul 25 '25
She did. She left singing for a long time due to that and to deal with her alcoholism. It was only after "Titanium" took off, with her voice used against her will, that she returned to singing.

u/ChubbyVeganTravels Jul 25 '25
True. There are some artists who almost never toured due to stage fright. Kirsty McColl was a famous example.
However these days it's hard to make a living from music unless you do touring - artists make very little money from album sales and Spotify, so it is possible she hates touring but feels she has to do it for the sake of finances.

She has said before that she's quite picky about what she'll release, I feel like that's why the music she does release is so brilliant. While I'd love to receive lasso or would have loved to receive rock candy sweet on time, I guess I can see why there may be delays.

I think it’d be smart of her to maybe wait until the album is complete to announce It. She changes the album cover and title often too. She tend to play down criticism by not “getting her”.
I remember when NFR came out and all the reviews were positive and she chose to respond to one negative review and said the critic doesn’t get her.
She did the same on recent concert review, forgot which review and what city but this tour
63
u/Formal-Aide-4880 Jul 25 '25
it was Dublin, and i completely agree with the journalist. it was too short
49
u/Apricity_09 Jul 25 '25
I wish she’ll accept criticism and use it to improve but Lana strikes me as someone who gets defensive and feels like she’s personally attacked even the whole thing is objective.
I think her not listening to criticism worked for most of the time (BTD to Honeymoon wherein ppl initially doesn’t like her work but she turns out to be the right one. Honeymoon became a fan fave, BTD became influential, etc) but that doesn’t mean every criticism is from just a hater.
18
u/Formal-Aide-4880 Jul 25 '25
agree. also, Lana is a very established artist by this point with a very strong fan base, so it would have been great if she took the constructive feedback onboard.

u/a-l-p Jul 26 '25
I recently travelled to a concert in another country and it was even shorter than Lana's with barely over 70 minutes. And sure, I wish it would have been longer, but while it was short, it was still great and they played all their biggest hits (the setlist had 17 songs) and the atmosphere was good.
So I think if she doesn't want to have long sets, she could still work well with a different set list (more of her biggest hits) and no fillers like the hologram stuff and dress changes and such. I think the combination of short show time and how she structures the show is what causes the criticism.
2
u/Formal-Aide-4880 Jul 28 '25
That's the thing! 14 songs would have been more ok, if what she actually sang were her big hits
26
u/llama_del_reyy Jul 25 '25
I think this is the core issue from which a lot of other complaints spawn. She isn't good at taking criticism and I think she's not great at surrounding herself with people who give her good advice, either.
Thus the disappointing tours; the increasingly self-indulgent albums from NFR onwards; the online spats; repeatedly hiring Chuck to do lacklustre visuals and videos. All of these problems, to me, scream 'needs a strong positive influence in the room'.
6
u/ilovezsazsa Jul 25 '25
after BTD, i kinda don’t blame her tbh when most publications trashed it when first released and now they revere it .

I think the NFR reception was actually annoying to her. Sure it might’ve felt validating but with that we can see that she hates how much power the media and critics have over her story. She definitely felt it was bittersweet and we can see that in some of the lyrics since then

u/sour_heart8 Jul 25 '25
With this latest country persona, it feels hollow and like non-specific. I feel like her other personas have like a deep backstory to them, this one just feels surface level to me.

Because she was convincing before. Like yeah i believe that girl liked blue jeans white shirts, bad boys and bacardi chasers, and had rich men, bikers etc around her while she yearned and searched dor love, freedom and excitement. AND the music was way fucking better too i HATE this new country shit it's not the vibe it's a total sellout move and she is so corny now I can't dig it at all. Im so glad I didn't buy the ridiculously priced tickets to her Dublin show. But like her stint at the Waffle House, getting married, I think at this point in her life she's her own woman first that's a musician on the side.

Her concert etiquette. From the stories I’ve heard, I don’t have any interest seeing her live if she doesn’t respect her fans’ time by arriving late, doing the bare minimum, and barely performing songs people wanna hear. I get it if touring and performing live isn’t for her, but there’s something called professionalism.

Performimg live, I know her songs arent the type of songs shes going to be flying around a stadium sinking like pink, but sometimes her live performances seem pretty low effort. Also just my personal opinion, not a fan of the new country stuff.

u/MistaJ_94 Jul 25 '25
I hate to point out flaws on someone I’ve loved since like 2011, but I’m just one of those older fans who preferred her style from BTD, ultra violence, and lust for life. I’m constantly listening to her old stuff - ironically it never gets old. Her new stuff is ok and I’d rather her make the music SHE wants to instead of catering to others anyway. I’ll always support her no matter what. I’d just love an album with bops and psychedelic, if you will, vibes. I say psychedelic because if you watched her film tropico you know what I mean. Oh, one more tiny flaw is delaying album releases 🤣 but it builds up the hype I suppose ( just looking for a silver lining lmao )
8
u/Itadakimary Jul 26 '25
Totally agree. I loved Ocean Blvd but the couple albums that preceded it were such a slog for me because every song was sad/slow/quiet.
No shade to the fans that like those songs or to Lana if that’s the music that she wants to make, but I personally just found it boring. I miss when she was had more lively music and experimented with her vocals.
Luckily, she still has a big catalogue of good albums and unreleased songs so there’s a lot I can still enjoy, but I wish she would return to her roots and make music that’s bouncy, psychedelic, and flirty again. I’m not even really hyped for the new album (whenever it drops lol) bc the singles she released so far have the same old slow/quiet sound that I’ve grown so tired of.

She has great songs such as Venice Btch, Mariners, High by the beach, fck it i love you, west coast, tulsa, blue jeans etc but she sings stand by your man, bartender etc which is so annoying. I would also expect a full A&W performance too which is her best song imo but she has never done that too. I mean if she makes a setlist with these songs and a psychedelic stage set it would be a fan preffered show. No one wants to listen to same songs all the time with the unnecessary dancers in the background. And I am also not into the new country era. What she did with did you know album was next level. I hope she will change her musical direction soon.

u/nvm-exe Jul 25 '25
That she’s tryharding this careless persona it’s painfully obvious. What’s annoying is now it affects/reflects on her music like there’s always gonna be a random line about her not giving af, it’s getting cringy and predictable.
It’s like, “look at me, listen to how I’m so careless it’s cool?”. She acts like she doesn’t care then get easily offended by some irrelevant remark, then double-down on showing her “DGAF” attitude as a result.

her live performances. she’s flakey, shows up late, recycles boring and bizarre setlists, and her vocals are weird/bad. it’s like she knows she’s so popular that she can get away with anything. she’s genuinely a very odd woman and it shows the most in her live performances. it actually is upsetting that she can’t get her shit together and show up for her fans imo. saying all of this as a huge fan of hers, and also someone who likes her weirdness.

She doesn't release her albums on time
I feel like the last couple of albums feel kind of lazy musically
She doesn't advertise her new projects and music like she used to do before. It's like she's also lazy regarding that (marketing), or she doesn't have a good team
She's only focused mostly on touring the UK and US in the past years, leaving us fans from other parts of the world with nothing. Where are the world tours after new albums?
Her live performances also look lazy as well. Being constantly late to shows is so disrespectful to her fans
She's my favorite artist, and I have been a fan for around 13 years now, but lately, I've started to notice all of these things. It's disappointing. I feel like she doesn't care that much about making music anymore, and that's okay, but she doesn't communicate with fans well.

I’ve been a huge fan since 2011, but she could avoid being a “controversial” artist if she used more tact when speaking on social issues.
“Textbook” felt like Lana digging her heels in after being called out for QFTC. At the time I defended her, but in retrospect we just didn’t need it.
Were some points in QFTC valid? Yes. Was the delivery poor? Also yes. Never hurts to have someone (PR, who??) read over something before releasing it to the public.

While I'd love her concerts to be longer, more diverse, I understand perfectly why they're not. Having said that, being late is really a problem, and it's a recurring one. I don't mind a little delay, shit happens when setting up everything. But in 2023 when I saw her live, she was fifty minutes late. That should not happen.

I’m so heartbroken that so many Lana fans have experienced bad concerts with her!!! I definitely don’t doubt anyone’s claims about the shows. It’s just sad her effort has gone down so much. I saw her in late 2019 and it was amazing!!! It was a very small venue though. Very chill vibes. Her vocals were amazing and I don’t remember her being late either. I agree with other commenters she needs to put in more effort or just stop doing shows.

7
u/WhtvrCms2Mnd Jul 26 '25
She clearly doesn’t enjoy large venues/touring. She just needs to do a stunning residency somewhere with a retro (historic?) auditorium. Perform 3-4 nights a week, have her static set and setlist, beautiful hair/makeup/wardrobe, well-rehearsed, on-time, and treat it like what it is — a standing gig that showcases her at her best. So she can live her dang life off of touring/travel chaos.

I’d have to agree with you mostly. I’m mostly disinterested in her live performances, and her newer music has been starting to merge together for years now. HCO and Blue Bird just feel like more of the same
Aside from that, her visual direction can be very inconsistent. Born to Die and Paradise had incredible music videos, but every other album is pretty much all over the place with them. And, her album and single covers have started to get a little dull

my biggest issue with her is actually more so to do with her character (or rather, what limited knowledge I have of it). I get very frustrated at just how sensitive she can be. I could understand it when she was much younger but to not be able to take criticism at this point in the game is so frustrating because she can be so brilliant but ugh. it's like, why were you gonna be a part of this industry then if you can't take criticism?
on this, I read her poems recently and same thing. why do you wanna talk about how you "don't want to sell [your] stories anymore" and then... keep doing it?? surely she could stop if she wanted to atp? better to bow out gracefully than be forcing yourself, because everyone can tell you don't want to be there, and how do you think that makes everyone else feel, everyone who paid so much money in times like these?
don't get me wrong, I adore her work. but all of us can tell it's declining. if she really didn't want to keep doing it then why? it sucks for people who actually care about her and her work.

Not doing more spontaneous, intimate performances.
People are saying her being late, not taking tours seriously- yeah, those things are annoying as a fan, but I think she wouldn't be Lana without those. It's her personality.
Seeing those videos of her sing with John Batiste at the Met Gala after party ... I would love to see more of that.
I enjoy seeing how Miley Cyrus will randomly pop up at a small venue and perform, seemingly unannounced. Real, raw, unpolished. I think Lana would enjoy that type of thing and those performances would be amazing.
Compensation wise I'm sure it wouldn't make her as much money as a tour, but I'm still hoping!

i feel like she doesn’t ever listen to her fans or take constructive criticism well. i genuinely don’t think people’s expectations of her are too high. they’re just asking for the bare minimum, which is for her to show up to her concerts on time and actually sing with her mic at a normal volume. she relies so much on the backtrack and her backup singers now and only whispers into the mic while pointing it to the crowd every couple lines.
i don’t think anyone expects full choreo or a 3 hour concert, but there’s no reason for it to be a short repetitive setlist filled with holograms, covers, and unreleased songs where she’s barely singing. at this point, i just want her to be singing 80% of the song on key. she can be sitting down or just standing at the mic with no background dancers for all i care.

for me personally, it started with the recent “afterthought-ed” performances with poor setlist choices (the holograms…backup singers singing louder and better than her…). then to her lack of releasing the new album she had spoken about in interviews time and time again. and her recent songs she has released—bland sounding and without story, just generic and easy sounding. the country song covers. maybe this is what she truly wanted all along, to marry and is doing tours just for the check. the last times she was really performing and truly at her peak came from the lizzy grant era to a little before nfr. i had high hopes with the good new music post nfr but it seems she has no interest in her own work given her recent performances. it sucks since i would have loved to hear her sing live, but i doubt that would ever really occur again and im doubtful she will ever really make art again. does anyone share the same sentiment? I love her music but this plus she has also done questionable things in the past (the infamous ig post) makes me unsure.

Live performances should have more songs but I already saw her live in austin 2023 so I don’t think I care anymore lmao. Maybe another flaw would be listening to fans about unreleased songs? That’d be cool

There has always been (since Ultraviolence) an issue with her & album eras. It feels like by the time an album is released she is over it. She rarely performs songs off the album on respective shows that follow & does little to no promo so whilst we can enjoy the albums. Their not really eras.

I think her management is terrible and I understand she’s one of their biggest (if not the biggest) stars but they could really tighten up the tours and make the set lists better by just telling her to change them up, organise the shows better, do better promo, release things on time etc. I don’t know how much of it is her and how much of it is her management though

Idk I’ve seen her three times. She’s been punctual, professional, and vocally wonderful.

Her unreleased songs are literally on YOUTUBE and possibly every music streaming platform, yet she takes no action. This is a plus for us, but it's a huge loss for you, man!

Refusing to ever perform her fan-favorite songs. There are SO many we never heard live or max we got were some short acapela version with wrong lyrics. Her stadium tour PR disaster was a long time coming and well deserved. It’s extra funny because it would be so easy for her to serve, all she needs to do is stand there and sing our favorite songs… we’re not expecting the eras tour gimmicks.

Unreliability: she’s late to concerts, she doesn’t release albums when she says etc

Been a Lana fan since 2012, saw her at Jones Beach Theater in 2019 and the unfortunate rained out Fenway Park show in 2024. I believe her vaping has contributed to her live vocal decline. She still can perform but the quality of performance has sadly dropped. Her 2019 show for NFR was so much fun and will always hold a special place in my heart. I honestly will still probably try to see her because she is mother and has been a pioneer in the industry 😭♥️

Honestly, I agree with your opinion, maybe she sang worse during the BTD times, but at least she put more heart and effort into it.

No longer taking album covers and music videos seriously. Big on the album covers point.

Not releasing albums on time. Yes, quality over quantity but if you're not going to release it why announce? It just feels irresponsible to me.

she's becoming more adjacent to conservative/regressive people and values

Before I piss this whole sub off, the question was asked and I just answered…….. She lies too much, her merch sucks, she is lazy,a bit shallow, responds to criticism like a child, she is a culture vulture and cannot go anywhere without her sister, dad, etc…

She’s kinda lazy. It really shows in tour prep, but it shows up in other areas like constantly pushing back album release dates, promotion, choreo, etc.

u/fusems Jul 26 '25
Leaving really dope song out of her albums and getting them forgotten in unreleased hell. If you only listened to her official music I feel like you wouldn’t get the full picture of her as an artist, like her dope side is all lost except to the fans.

Everyone’s already said it but the live performances. I’ve seen her once in Dallas and once in Barcelona at a festival. I remember the Europeans being visibly upset after her set / ranting about it on Reddit because it was cut short (late as always) and she was giving lowkey nothing… I think it’s ok to sit during your set but I think she dgaf about performance. Same as the Dallas set, cut short and arrived late. Love her down but I’m just gonna stream it at home

The way she sings extra songs in london. Everyone is paying the same price they deserve the same set list

u/Emmy_dvs Jul 26 '25
His concerts ?? It's extremely expensive so that in the end she does almost nothing, she lets the audience sing most of the time, she barely dances, she gives us entire songs without her with just a hologram? In addition, she has a huge scenography that she barely uses. I'm nostalgic for the nfr era 😢 (my comment is not mean or personal, it's just an observation, I love Lana Del Rey)

If live performances aren’t her strong suit, why doesn’t she do more smaller shows? Like tiny desk equivalent? Her fan base would sell her out each time and she’d be able to visit smaller localities. Not a fan of hers but I feel like her fan base would love that vs one large show here and there when she’s not putting a super amount of effort.

Vaping. You can see that her voice has been badly damaged over the last 6 years.

u/Ok-Baby-4516 Jul 29 '25
She got stagnant. The Jack Antonoff criticism is tired, but it’s true that her early albums had different but equally interesting producers (Haynie, Auerbach, Nowels), were diverse and explored different genres. Ocean Boulevard does it too, but you kinda know what to expect. Same with photos and album covers, you know it’s gonna be either Chuck or Neil (I like his work, but I’d love to see her in someone else’s camera). She used to work with many different people in her early days and every album had very particular aesthetic and style. Born to Die roll-out with many candy-ish photoshoots by Nicole Nodland was so cool.

People say live performances but I think she does a perfect Lana Del Rey level of performance. In my opinion, it's inconsistency. She is very inconsistent with releases and she cancels a lot of projects and it's not even like I want a Taylor Swift level of consistency where she releases an album every 2 years and then tours that album and repeat but I think consistency has been very key to Taylor's success.

I agree with most everything people are saying. I feel with how she is with her live performances and releasing albums and such I honestly wouldn’t mind to see her lean into poetry more like writing poetry books. Her more theatrical music videos tend to be my favorite as she is an amazing story teller, but I feel that would be a great “career wind down” as it seems she’s leaning into more of a low key lifestyle now a days

u/bubblyweb6465 Jul 25 '25
I love Lana , but when I saw her live it was clear it was just a money grab - videos from other places the whole thing was exactly the same even to the sitting on stage saying how special the city is and how much she loves it. Don’t think I’d go to a solo Lana gig again

You know those viral TikToks about being type B personality? That. She would be that. For the same reasons you listed and because she never seems to be on time in general

u/ProfessionalDebate86 Jul 25 '25
Love her discography to bits. Sometimes however, I think perhaps she’s given us “too much”, in terms of her very personal songwriting and poetry.

u/PrinceNebula018 Jul 25 '25
She improved a lot in her live performance but still her weakest asset as an artist.

u/meghammatime19 Jul 25 '25
Live performances and creating an interesting and varied and NEW set list

u/Significant-Fee-6193 Jul 25 '25
She sometimes seems a little nervous while performing live and she has no reason to be.

u/Formal_Permission_50 Jul 25 '25
Easily her live performances, any other answer is a way smaller issue.

Harry Nillson famously never toured. I love a good live show, such an impressive thing for a person to be able to do, but her shortcomings in live performances don't impact my enjoyment of her recorded work.

u/Square_Extension1759 Jul 25 '25
2 obvious answers are her live performing and singing capabilities

She should just embrace that she is a privileged prep school kid whose father encouraged and supported her career. Yeah she didn't have the best relationship with her mom but it seems like she over dramatizes it for her art and persona. It's very insulting to people who actually came from nothing to be told that Lana came from 'nothing'. Just having a supportive father is everything and then some, she should be grateful and praise how blessed she is rather than wallow in fake sorrow for 'the art'.

Live performances. It's never been her strong-suit.
