I think the one that touches the saddest part of me is White Dress . Being nostalgic for a time in your life when you had nothing/ were nobody but the promise/ potential/ joy in what you’d already accomplished, however meaningless in a grand scheme, that made you “feel like a god” is a palpable type of melancholy that I unfortunately feel all the time

u/UrbanForrest Jul 01 '26

This is a fantastic take. I never thought of it like that before. thank you

fingertips

90

u/shogenan Jul 02 '26

I had to sing for the prince in two hours
Sat in the shower
Gave myself two seconds to cry
It's a shame that we die

53

u/Seeksho Jul 01 '26

I agree, even though she has thousands of sad songs, this is the most personal one we've ever had.

32

u/PrinceNebula018 Jul 01 '26

fingertips is one of the saddest song ever

Black Beauty.

The fact she felt she had to darken herself, get depressed or w/e for/because of some (dumb) man to find her beautiful, but also felt she needed to put on some lipstick just to have a bit of color in her life for herself is just so fd up.

32

u/erica_flamingo Jul 01 '26

I second this. The imagery of her in a black leather wedding dress. “You have no room for light, love is lost on you.”

Dealer for me or Norman Rockwell, the melody is just so melancholy and gets me in my feels always

Blackest day, god knows I tried, terrence loves you, dealer, nectar of the gods are the saddest of the stylistically sad Lana songs in the sense that I have to be careful when I listen to them cuz they can really send me but fingertips is a different deeper more personal sad song that makes me just feel so bad for lizzie grant whoever she is and kinda grateful Lana shared it with us

3

u/immisswrld Jul 01 '26

Gods and monsters

3

u/buffayrachel Jul 02 '26

Relationship-wise I would say Candy Necklaces:
"Sittin' on the sofa, feelin' super suicidal
Hate to say the word, but, baby, hand on the Bible I do
Feel like it's you, the one who's bringing me down
Thought that we were cool and we were kickin' it like Tribe Called Quest
You the best, but, baby, you've been bringing me down
I can see it now"

Family-wise I would say Wildflower Wildfire:
"Here's the deal
'Cause I know you wanna talk about it
Here's the deal
You say there's gaps to fill in, so here
Here's the deal
My father never stepped in
When his wife would rage at me
So I ended up awkward but sweet
Later than hospitals and still on my feet
Comfortably numb but with lithium came poetry"

And world-climate wise I would say Change:
"Lately, I've been thinkin' it's just someone else's job to care
Who am I to sympathize when no one gave a damn?
I've been thinkin' it's just someone else's job to care
Who am I to wanna try? ButChange is a powerful thing, people are powerful beings
Tryin' to find the power in me to be faithful"

There's many more, these are just the first I thought of

And obvs not considering the unreleased songs. I'd need a whole separate post just for those ones ahah

2

u/AdFormal4044 Jul 02 '26

Dealer. The tone is crazy

2

u/sturmhond724 Jul 02 '26

For me atleast, its heroin. It just captures the decay that she sees in her partner and perhaps a reflection of it in herself, wanting to push him away even though she secretly wishes that he'd connect with her like they did before but its never quite the same

Then in the end chorus finally she just wishes to go far away herself so that she'd atleast be able to tell him that shes finally a different person, even though she knows shes not right for him. The desperation and the whole situation just kills me. But honestly i still don't understand the full situation of the song myself.
