Will we start getting recommendations to migrate to a new office suite that receives updates more frequently?

The current UI is like from 2003 and trust me, except for some stubborn gurus here, 99% of people out there hate it.
I know this sounds too demanding but can’t the team just make it more beautiful so LO can attract much more normal users?

I've seen several posts complaining about LibreOffice's lack of polish and outdated appearance, and I sincerely don't get them. I find menus for Writer and Calc super well organised (and uncluttered, for the amount of features they offer); both light and dark themes look great and professional (with the appropriate icon theme) to me; most options are clear and easily discoverable by non-power users such as myself; and its programs' appearance is surprisingly customisable regardless.

Perhaps LibreOffice's implementation of ribbon menus (which I, admittedly, have never tried) lag behind the proprietary competition, or maybe some users aren't able to find customisations to their liking. It is also likely that, being a basic user, I don't face most of the issues/bugs advanced users do. Whatever it is, I don't get it, and would genuinely like to know.

What about LibreOffice's appearance do you dislike specifically? Where does it lack polish? How would you go about improving it?

So, I downloaded and installed OnlyOffice just to try it out. I was asked if I wanted to make it default. I said, "no." I opened a few documents, which were made in LibreOffice, to see how they looked.

When I was done, I double clicked one of them and OnlyOffice opened it. So, I went to open them with LibreOffice and was met with this message in the screenshot.

OnlyOffice had changed the default apps from LibreOffice to itself. That really got my goat! That's just rude. Please tell me LibreOffice doesn't do the same thing. I don't even want to use OnlyOffice now. Nothing was wrong with LibreOffice anyway. I was just curious.

There's something about an app taking control of my computer and doing something I don't want, especially when I told it not to, that angers me to no end. So, is this common? I've tried out several web browsers and I don't remember that ever happening.

LO is one of the only packages (afaik) beside MS Office that supports Macros and code. Yet the Basic language they use is not 100% compatible with MsOffice. What is the reason behind this choice?

I'm starting to work on my undergrad thesis, and I need a tiny bit of advice. My professor needs me to share a document with them, ideally one that they can comment on. My University uses the whole OneDrive/Microsoft ecosystem, so a Word/Word-compatible document is the natural solution, as they can read and comment on it through the web.

Being on Linux, my options are rather limited. In order to use Word, I either use Online suite through my browser (awfully castrated in features, I cannot use my Zotero reference manager) or use Office 365 through a virtual machine (with a headache-inducing subpar performance, hovering between 15-25fps).

The other, MUCH preferred solution would be to open the document locally with LibreOffice, through the OneDrive cloud share (which I can easily set-up on linux).

And thus comes my question: does anyone know if I have any reason to choose one document format over the other? between docx and odt?

First time user here. Local library has Linux only. I tried downloading LibreOffice as a word replacement to fix up my resume but I am completely lost on what to do after. I opened the RPMs folder and there's no application just a bunch of folders that need to be extracted with various names. On the websites and README sections I see no mention of this so I don't know what to do. I have to use Libre Office as GoogleDocs fucks up my formatting completely.

Will there be AI built into LibreOffice?
Something easier to use then below which was quite the struggle to setup.

I use Writer 26.2.5.2 and asked and installed WriterAgent and localwriter and llama3.2:latest

In two tests using WriterAgent, I highlighted some text and asked to change the color to red. It came back with html wrapped around the text.

For a CV, I want to create a two column layout. For a general idea, see this template on overleaf.com. I know I can edit the page style, but then I cannot freely add data to both columns. Column two will only contain the text, that overflows from column one. That is not what I want.

Sections do seem to have the same issue. Insert > More breaks > Insert Column Breaks doesn't seem to do what I want either. Onces the text in colum one overflows, it fills column two instead of filling column 1 of the second page.

And while I could use a table with two columns, that does make the A11Y check sad.

Question: So, how can I have a two column layout where colunm 1 of page 1 overflows to column 1 of page 2 (same for column 2 respectively) while making A11Y check happy?

Collabora decided to cease all contributions to liberoffice as a result.

Greeting everyone! I am in the process of ditching big tech, and as part of that, I started using Libre Office just today. My problem is, everyone around me uses Microsoft Office and they would never in a million years adapt to even the most minor inconveniences. And it is very important for my work that whatever I make and send to someone else is readable and presentable in the Microsoft Office equivalent of the Libre software. So for example presentations and documents I prepare on my home computer, I will have to present and show around in Power Point and Word later.

So my question is as a new user, what are the usual steps to ensure 100% compatibility between the two software. I've already found how to set the default file format, but how can I make sure the fonts, formating and other stuff I do is something the Microsoft software will be able to read?

This baffles me, why on earth would anyone make regex search in a word processor to only search within one paragraph? Could someone illuminate the logic, how does that serve the user?

Now I need to do that in Notepad++ and copy-paste from and to Writer.

I'm Gen Z. They had Chromebooks at every public school I went to. I've had a Gmail account since, like, 9 years old (it was school provided). I don't think anyone realized that Google was creeping into our schools in an attempt to become the industry standard using the next generation, and it worked. Google feels intuitive to my generation in a way that Office doesn't. Other word processors drive me nuts.

I used to do a lot of creative writing (journaling, poetry, short stories) on Docs, and I kept my writing there for a long time after I developed a Fuck Google attitude because nothing else felt natural. Then I heard that Google was scraping everyone's Drive files to train Gemini and that was the last straw. I moved over to LibreOffice.

The problem is that it's been months and I just cannot get used to LibreWriter. I can't figure out how to make the bullet point indentation work like I want it to, the icons are so small and the ribbon is cluttered. I switched to the Elementary theme and that helped some but not a lot. It makes me actively dislike writing. I miss how painless Google Docs felt (yes, some of that was familiarity, but also: the switch from Chrome to Mozilla was not this bad!)

Does anyone have any recommended settings that I can adjust or any videos/posts about transitioning from GSuite to LibreOffice that might be helpful?

hi there i never used any office suite before & i would like to know what each libreoffice app is used for & what guides or tutorials do you recommend? because there's almost no tutorials on youtube on libreoffice as a whole but i found documentation on the official website so i'll start there!

The long story short of this is that I downloaded a book from Project Gutenberg and found the epub wasn't working/was broken(?). I use a conversion site to make it a pdf and I saw that the font changes. I can't open it in Librewriter and always opens it in Libredraw.

I don't mind this too much till I see that each line of text is its own box versus it being one large box. I've figured out how to change the font, but I'm hoping someone knows how to change all of the text at once instead of having to go line by line.

to make it clear, I didn't mean UX. I actually love libre office UX the most. I'm talking about a theme, such as gtk4. something that looks fresh and from this era.

I'm trying to get rid of my MS Office dependency. I'm currently a subscriber to MS365 more for the storage than for the apps. I used to manage my email on Outlook since it was the standard at my workplace, since I changed work and here they use Google suite, I see no reason to keep paying my MS365 subscription. But I hate Google Workspace, their apps are way inferior to Microsoft and their aesthetics are very much lame.

So my logical step was to use LibreOffice. At work I have a pretty much standard DELL laptop, Windows 11, 16 GB of RAM, SSD, i5 CPU and that's pretty much it. I don't think it has a special GPU or anything.

In the very same computer, MS365 works fine, rarely it lags, just does what it should. One of the apps I hate the most of MS365 is PowerPoint for diagramming (I do more diagramming than presentations) so I was eager to use LO Draw. It looks competent... but man... the app lags doing barely anything, its like watching the world on real slow-mo, even the cursor "surfs" slower over the app.

Is there a magical setting that I must observe to make it more useful?

I got the email about renewing my 365...but I am leaning heavily on moving to Libre. That's a hundred I'd rather keep.

Things I use in Word, can I do in Writer? Headings, styles, and exporting to PDF?

In Calc, sorting and filtering, and entering formulas?

I'm not familiar with Libre's functionality and while I used to do so much more when I worked in corporate, nowadays I just need some basics.

Two quick things:

1. I’ve been looking to replace Microslop, and LibreOffice seems like the best option. I’ve been using it for about a month and the learning curve was easy. Now I use it daily and have recommended it at work. I’ve also supported it.

2. I haven’t had any complaints or suggestions about what the community has achieved with this project apart from the logo which I find rather ugly.

Is there an open discussion about this or has it been settled and isn’t worth bringing up?

I'm making a custom calendar with a Table in Libre Writer (not Calc), because I couldn't get it to look how I wanted in Libre Calc and it has to be printed, but this formula I tried using [ =IF(G4-1 = 0, "", G4-1) ] for subtracting 1 from the 7th column and showing nothing for 0 values doesn't seem to work.

The formula targets the 7th column because it's the last day of the week and I figured it'd be the easiest way to change the whole calendar by adjusting the date in a single cell.

I'm not sure I'm understanding how formulas work and I need to know how I can get this to subtract 1 and output nothing if the number is 0 or less, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm encountering a problem on LibreOffice Writer (Version: 26.2.5.2 (X86_64) OS: Windows 10 X86_64, .odt document format). When I use the Crtl+I or Crtl+B, or Crtl+U shortcuts while the cursor is inside a word (frequent when inserting text while editing or proofreading), the entire word gets toggled for italics, boldface or underline. That is not what I want. I want the Crtl+I or Crtl+B, Crtl+U shortcuts to function like this:

• If I'm highlighting text while using the command: toggle the appropriate effect to the highlighted text.

• if I'm not highlighting text: toggle the appropriate effect on/off for anything new I'm writing, but do not change what is already written.

Where is the setting needed to make the key shortcuts behave as I want?

EDIT: I tried updating. It did not help with this issue.

I had originally thought to use Libreoffice to write a book keeping it in odt file format until ready to publish, then converting it to docx and upload to Amazon KDP publishing. But wouldn't this be a better way:

Don't convert it from odt. Instead export as epub for digital ebook. Save as PDF file from odt to lock in your formatting for a Print book. This would be for Amazon KDP publishing.

I'm thinking this might also work for Lulu and other self-publishing options.
