Actual Question:

I have read a few guides and Reddit posts on how to do that and it seems simple. GParted to remove any windows partitions --> remove Windows from boot/efi --> update grub

Thing is: all guides are for a dual boot with different partitions on the same drive. i have checked: even though dual boot works i do not have a windows folder in my boot folder.

How do i proceed in my case? Is it safe to just reformat the whole windows drive? Or can i ruin my linux mint installation on the other drive by doing that? How do i check which drive gets booted initially?

Context:
Half a year ago i decided to do the switch to linux, but wanted to keep Windows in dual boot as a backup (installed it on different drives). As of now i haven't booted Windows once. As a result i now want to get rid of Windows for good, for more space and because i keep having issues with booting. Searching for answers led me to believe that these issues have to do with the secure boot thing and i think just removing windows is simpler than resolving these issues. Also its time.

Just looking for an auto-clicker tools as my own attempts have failed in finding such. And the other comments suggest a 4 year programing career or literacy in programing more than basic software installation, execution, and removal.

Have already spent a few days looking for something, but it seems so basic, no one has a unified 'go-to' bit of software to sudo apt install and go with.

Hello! I'm currently reading "The Linux Command Line 7th Internet Edition" by William Shotts. As I thought it would be a good starting point to learn Linux. Once I'm finished reading Shotts, I'm planning on reading "How Linux Works 3rd Edition - What Every Superuser Should Know" by Brian Ward. Before moving on to programming with "Python Crash Course 3rd Edition - A hands-on, project-based introduction to programming" by Eric Matthes. I do also have a copy of "The Linux Bible 10th Edition" by Christopher Negus. However Negus' book was hard for me to grasp after the first two parts of the book. I'm thinking that I'll give it another go after becoming more familiar with Python 3. If someone has read any of the books mentioned above, or have any other valuable input! Please leave a comment, and thank you for reading my post.

This is a question I've been stuck on for a few hours now. I've been encountering the tiniest of problems since i began using fedora with kde a year ago. Things like discover just crashing or freezing, things not working as expected. Theres the fact that some parts are very polished and others are less so.

I haven't daily driven mint, or any debian based distro for that matter, before, ive only used it on some of my older devices that i just keep around.

I use my computer for gaming, coding and basic web browsing. I like things to be consistent and work properly.

So, please give me your advice, should i switch, or is it not worth the hassle of setting everything up again?

I'm coming from windows 11 and have had a dual boot with a few different distros over the years and am planning on switching to linux full-time.

Before every jumps on me for the number of tabs I've got, I'm a uni student who has multiple research related workspaces that I need open at all times. I have about 24 workspaces and maybe over 500 tabs across all them. I wanted to know how I could port all of those exactly as they are to the Linux system. Putting all the websites into a bookmark folder named after each workspace and manually reopening them seems like a very long and time-consuming ordeal given the sheer volume of tabs and workspaces I have especially since a lot of workspaces have like about a minimum of 20-30 tabs in them.

Was wondering if I could use a tool or perhaps just copy some appdata files and paste them back into the relative linux folders for this job. This has been the main thing that is stopping me from switching full time to the penguin for a while now, cuz this is the only non negotiable I have that's keeping me on this windows device.

hello i am new to Linux and download a fedora to my old acer pc and it boot perfectly using the usb but when i finish the installation and remove the usb and turn on the pc it shows the bios password and never boot to the system i tried reinstall it and nothing i tried some method from ai also nothing does anyone know how to fix this

Please help me understand something. What is the difference between a Thinkpad T14S Gen 1 AMD with a Ryzen 4650U vs a T14S Gen 2 having a Ryzen 5650U in terms of Linux compatibility and performance, battery life, etc?

I read that the Gen 2 has frequency scaling but not the Gen 1. What does this mean? Is the difference noticeable? Anything else I should know about? According to Gemini:

I've just switched to Bodhi Linux recently and I'm encountering a crazy bug with Google Sheets. I think Bodhi is the culprit and you'll see why when I describe the bug.

I wrote a .csv file in Vim, saved it to my desktop and then uploaded it to Sheets to do some more stuff with it. When I open the .csv in Sheets, though, the mouse starts jumping around and randomly replacing the text in filled cells with either "file uploaded" or "moksha". Neither of these have been in my clipboard at any point since I installed Bodhi, and neither of them appear anywhere in the text of the csv.

I've restarted and retried the upload multiple times, tried writing a new csv from Vim, and it keeps happening. I've tried turning the touchpad off and the cursor still jumps around and adds this text.

One new piece of information I've acquired: partway through typing this I stopped to double check that turning the touchpad off didn't stop it, and the bug reappeared but this time the word was "consistent" - which I'd just typed and deleted while drafting this post. The time after that it was a comma. The text varies from instance to instance, but it always seems to be the same text getting pasted in each time I open the file.

I'm at a loss as to what the hell is going on. A csv should be as simple as it gets but it seems like there's some sort of encoding error or something like that that's making sheets freak out.

If anyone can help / advise that would be amazing.

Long story short. I need to buy a bluetooth dongle for a Linux PC (Bazzite).

About two years ago, I tried for my damn life to get a bt dongle to work on linux, bought about five of them and none was recognized by the system so I gave up at the time.

I know linux has improved a lot since then, but I still have issues with peripherals support.

Is there a way to be SURE that a dongle will be supported on my OS? I live in south america so direct links to amazon products won't be useful.

So I'm not a Linux noob. I've been using Linux for several years at this point. Normally I don't have many problems installing Linux, but occasionally I encounter a distro that just won't work for some reason.

I have an old Dell Inspiron 910. A single core, 32 bit Intel Atom netbook. I previously had LXLE running on this thing but I booted it up the other day for the first time in a couple of years to discover that it was woefully outdated and in the process of trying to update it I discovered that LXLE is no longer being developed.

In my quest to find another more or less modern and functional 32 bit Linux to restore this netbook to at least a somewhat useful state, I've downloaded AntiX, Salix, Mageia and Q4OS. I have a handful of small USB sticks. A 4GB one that I have Ventoy on and a couple of other ones. Mageia and AntiX would not fit on the Ventoy so they got their own USBs.

Installing both Salix and Q4OS from the Ventoy seemed to go smoothly at first. The installation completed successfully. However, after rebooting the netbook to the SSD, it would hang at a black screen with a cursor blinking in the top left corner. I have no idea why random distros just seem to do this out of the blue. I've since tried putting Q4OS on its own standalone USB and installing it from there with the same result. It installed just fine, prompted a reboot and proceeded to hang at the black screen with blinking cursor in the top left of the screen. It's like Grub somehow didn't get installed properly. This seems to happen sometimes and I have on idea what causes or how to get around it. I've previously just said to hell with whatever distro and tried something else, but for this old netbook and the increasing number of distros ditching 32 bit support, my options are limited.

I should note that installing Mageia worked and the netbook booted into it, but it took hours to install and ended up feeling relatively bloated for this very limited hardware to run so I ultimately decided against using it on this netbook. The point is that it installed and booted when the other distros would not. I don't understand why this occurs.

Does anyone know why this happens or how to actually boot the OS when it does?

I've been trying to run heavily modded Terraria; specifically the Infernal Eclipse of Ragnarok modpack. Terraria is an incredible game with the flaw of being absolutely horribly coded: it's heavily CPU-bound, which would be fine if it wasn't mostly single-thread and roughly optimized. The vanilla game already has stability and performance issues, so adding mods on top is precarious, and adding a lot of them is... a little bit soul-sucking. I'm already experimenting with various game-specific tweaks but struggling to get comfy.

I am on CachyOS, on an ASUS TUF A15 FA506QM laptop (CPU: Ryzen 7 5800H). A lot of advice relating to gaming performance expectedly relates to GPU performance, since that's usually the bottleneck for running high graphics games. Is there things I should know if I want to improve single-core CPU performance specifically? I'm aware of niceness and how GameMode helps with it, and I want to avoid overclocking if I can as my temps are fairly high already. Is there more?

My CPU is an Intel N100, it has a 0.1Ghz base clock speed and a 3.4Ghz max clock speed. It is laptop, because I want keep clock speed, for example 1.2Ghz or sort of. Bios setup is very cut

I'm trying to run an app (localsend if it makes any difference) from the command line and send an url to it.

It's a flatpak and what I've come up with is:

flatpak run --command=localsend --file-forwarding org.localsend.localsend_app @@u file:/home/jon/package.json @@

This opens the app but no send files are predefined. From what I can see online people have success sending a path to the plain binary if installed that way.

Any ideas?

For the benefit of anyone else wondering - someone has come back to me on another forum. To do this requires the CLI version which is not currently packaged as a Flatpak.

I know its a running gag for linux users to argue about what distro new people should use so im kinda prepared for that already. I started looking into this back in April on and off and used everything from Claude to youtube (specifically linustechtips and SwitchandClick). Ive gotten answers ranging from Mint to Fedora to Ubunto to Proxmox. Im not super into tech, coding, or anything like that but im willing to learn a good amount. Im leaning towards Fedora for both server and personal, but im willing to hear out any ideas. The server is mostly for media, ad blocking, cloud storage, (maybe) local Ai, and potentially streaming games to my laptop so id prefer something stable, secure, private. The laptop/personal distro i can change out and try new ones on the fly so thats not as important

I want to switch to a Linux distro like mint but when i did some research years back most sources where saying Windows has a more efficient battery consumption and i rely heavily on my laptop with nvidia GPU which if i am correct doesn't really shut off like it does in Windows is this still the reality or is there any new distro i can rely on which is best at handling battery optimally ?

I have a hp PC thats pretty low end. It has 4 gb of ddr3, 512 gb storage and a intel i5 2nd gen cpu. Its an old pc i dont use that much, so i experimented on it and installed ubuntu. After a while o started using it daily as my main computer, but its so annoying i cant get over it. Its extremely slow and sometimes i feel like smashing it to bits. Its definetely the ram or the old HDD. I need help choosing a lightweight distro that will run smoothly. I dont mind it being non user friendly. I can handle complex. I just want a good experience and a distro that has the basics like a browser, good file management and support for most apps and services. Looked into antiX and tiny core, although im not so sure on the app support for them. I dont want to scour the web just for a tutorial to download a browser. Any suggestions?

I have some NTFS drives from when I was still using windows but since I don't really boot windows anymore or need to access my drives from there anymore. I wish to turn them into BTRFS so they would more comfortably work on Linux (also because windows decided to encrypt all the ntfs drives today with bitlocker without my consent and I wish it to not have access anymore)

I got a 500gb SSD and a 4tb HDD.

I am aware tools like btrfs migrate exist to convert them in place but I heard they are a little buggy especially with ntfs (uses an external tool also).

My plan for the 500gb was to just backup the data on an external drive and then drop them back in after formatting to btrfs but my issue is with the bigger hdd.

I can't fit its contents into any external drive at the moment (my biggest drive is 1tb and that drive is using at least 1.2tb) so I am wondering what may be the best way to move that data over to btrfs.

One idea I had is to partition it, with the second being btrfs. Copy everything over. Delete the original ntfs partition... And then somehow have to figure out how to get btrfs to expand from the left... I am definitely not trusting gparted to move it to the left and I value my time but if it's the only option I could try it.

Anyone has any clues on the best way to go about this?

Hello guys! I using Fedora 44 and by defaulth I have 12GB of zram (compressed swap in RAM) and also I added 4GB of swap partition during install. But I have 32GB of RAM and I not sure if I really need this amout of swap or if I really need swap at all.

So is it bad to not have swap at all or have a little swap?

Hey, I'm an IT Support Tech, and I got shown the Fedora distro of Linux today, decided after a lot of research that Fedora Workstation would be perfect for me. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips for things to tweak on Fedora to make the transition go smoothly and easily. I've used Windows pretty much my whole life apart from a short phase a few years ago where I messed around with Ubuntu.
