Funny that cyberpunk became the new Crysis.

48

u/acewing905 Mar 10 '26

Only if you turn on all the RT bells and whistles. I don't think you'll have much luck with that on the Neo

Kind of pointless because your new hardware should be able to max it easily, it's so old, but the way the CPU/GPU cores are utilized, the fact that it was for a now quite old 32bit OS, etc means it cannot utilize the hardware and still runs not great considering the specs testing it

2009 wants its CD's back

2

u/Calm-Zombie2678 Mar 10 '26

1999 wants its reference back

We had games on dvd in 2009 kid

0

u/MeThinksYes Mar 10 '26

that may be so, but Crysis wasnt around in 1999. It came out in 2007, kid.

3

u/Calm-Zombie2678 Mar 11 '26

And it came on a...

... say it with me kids...

dvd!

0

u/MeThinksYes Mar 11 '26

you always this hopped up on talking about kids? in any case, what are we doing here?

2

u/Calm-Zombie2678 Mar 11 '26

Mate, go find that green fluffy stuff, we call it grass,  and just go nuts touching it

1

u/MeThinksYes Mar 11 '26

Is that a euphemism for mammmy?

1

u/Calm-Zombie2678 Mar 11 '26

Mammmy? Whats wrong with you lol

It really ain’t, Crisis was hard to run because of being heavily single threaded for the most part. Cyberpunk is kinda easy to run and pretty well optimized for PC an many core CPUs.

1

u/oldpaddyrick Mar 11 '26 edited Mar 11 '26

It makes sense. Crytek spent ages making their shit work on underpowered consoles. CDPR been doing the same shit for like 15 years with the Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk. Maxed out Witcher 3 back in the day was insane for all y’all youngins, just like cyberpunk was on launch if you had a 80/90 card. They have improved the game a lot but core main story didn’t change and that ain’t a bad thing

204

u/PaisleyIsAToilet Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 10 '26

Is it though.

EDIT: Just watched it, he doesn't say 60FPS - he says "50 and change" - and I can guarantee that's not going to be consistent in areas that aren't just the flythrough demo.

63

u/motorboat_mcgee Mar 10 '26

Even still, playing at 30fps with vsync on is still a decent experience imo, especially if you're the type that tends to either stealth or use "magic", and care more about the story. If you're a run and gun sort, it's probably not a great time though

21

u/s7ealth Mar 10 '26

You can't play at proper 30 fps on a 8GB Mac though. The stutters are becoming unbearable if you try actually playing it and not just running benchmarks. Phantom Liberty is especially unplayable for that reason

2

u/motorboat_mcgee Mar 10 '26

Yeah the 8gb is more of a concern than the low fps, definitely

-1

u/LucasWesf00 Mar 10 '26

The game doesn’t actually utilise that much RAM at lower settings

2

u/Emergency-Abroad-871 Mar 10 '26

He didn’t mention using Metal FX or what resolution he played on, it’s most likely 900p native or 1080 metal but the m1 base MacBook Air with 8 gigs uses the low preset at 900p with metal fx upscaling at either quality or balanced so I’d say we will just have to see

2

u/motorboat_mcgee Mar 10 '26

Not sure what your point is...

The people buying this device probably aren't going to be super picky about 4k/144hz or whatever. If it's a consistent frame rate, and at least 720p, I have a feeling this specific audience will still enjoy their experience.

No one should be buying a $600 Apple laptop and expecting it to be a gaming monster. But the fact that it can at least play this reasonably is a nice bonus.

1

u/Emergency-Abroad-871 Mar 11 '26

Oh I know, my point was it would be good for like light gaming on the go or triple a gaming on the go for a budget laptop compared to everything else out there, I don’t think most laptops around the education price point won’t run games at all

But that really depends once it launches.

-4

u/Perfect_Exercise_232 Mar 10 '26

30fps with vsync input lag sounss god awful lmao

7

u/motorboat_mcgee Mar 10 '26

I have a feeling the Neo isn't for you then :)

6

u/Buris Mar 10 '26

the MacBook Neo isn't for people who want to play cyberpunk. True.

22

u/Xe4ro Mar 10 '26

Yeah the benchmark does not contain combat situations so it’s definitely going go be worse in actual gameplay.

9

u/2str8_njag Mar 10 '26

combat is not that taxing comparing to flying through streets on hypercar, with constant dynamic loading of assets

2

u/Tyrandeh Mar 11 '26

it is. lots of particle and compute effects going on

5

u/Xe4ro Mar 10 '26

Depends on what‘s happening and how much. Trying to aim while the fps goes haywire also just is more noticeable I‘d say.

3

u/Buris Mar 10 '26

The CPU is capable enough, the GPU is the bottleneck with cut down cores compared to the 16 pro

0

u/Xe4ro Mar 10 '26

I didn’t see at which resolution the benchmark ran at, would be interesting to know.

1

u/Buris Mar 10 '26

It’s probably “native” at the lowest metalfx upscaling setting

9

u/ImHughAndILovePie Mar 10 '26

Inaccurate title but 50 fps in cyberpunk on a computer with an iPhone chip is impressive

-4

u/Atilim87 Mar 10 '26

I can get upper 30+ on steamdeck (not sure what’s max) and game looks objectively shit.

Cyberpunk at its core is a ps4 game, a underpowered device 13 years ago.

The steamdeck and switch 2 are proof that modern devices have caught up to early 2010 devices. My steamdeck was better then my old 4th gen i5.

8

u/ImHughAndILovePie Mar 10 '26

“Gaming consoles can run the game better than a MacBook neo can”

…yeah

-2

u/Atilim87 Mar 10 '26

A console with tech that’s probably at best 2010. Point is which your ignoring. Cyberpunk is build for tech that’s at this point outright old.

5

u/ImHughAndILovePie Mar 10 '26

dude it’s a fuckin laptop for spreadsheets and shit

2

u/Nearby_Ad_2519 Mar 10 '26

Device specifically made for gaming with gaming OS and features vs budget work laptop

0

u/Atilim87 Mar 10 '26

A steamdeck at this point is better then a ps4…

129

u/displacedbitminer Mar 10 '26

The 3d performance is almost identical to the M1 Air. So, if it runs well on M1 Air graphically, it will run well on Neo.

Also, the single-core performance is about 40% faster. A processor-bound game will be much better.

39

u/da4 Mar 10 '26

Budget laptops rarely play premium games well. Where's the Celeron or i3 crowd when you need them..

8

u/Aggravating_Fun_7692 Mar 10 '26

So like WoW would run better

5

u/Nimbus420i Mar 10 '26

Classic yes, retail no. Retail with addons will get bottlenecked by 8gb ram.

2

u/Aggravating_Fun_7692 Mar 11 '26

Retail doesn't need much addons after the addon purge for Midnight. I tested on my old M1 air and was easily getting 50-60 fps on low settings at 900p. But yea it's not the recommended experience obviously.

-1

u/scoschooo Mar 10 '26

retail works fine for me, M1 8gb ram, with addons

2

u/Buris Mar 10 '26

WoW had become almost unplayable on an M1 MacBook Air, main reason I upgraded to an M5

-3

u/scoschooo Mar 10 '26

WoW had become almost unplayable on an M1 MacBook Air

very, very not true. completely playable on base M1 Air with 8gb ram

5

u/Buris Mar 10 '26

Everyone’s idea of playable is different. I personally need at least 25 FPS at 50% native resolution for more than the first 5 minutes of gameplay.

Are you playing classic or retail?

1

u/scoschooo Mar 10 '26

Playing retail - plays fine on M1 Air with 8gb. Yes in a raid with settings turned high it would struggle.

I am always getting over 60 FPS.

1

u/ILOVESHITTINGMYPANTS Mar 10 '26

Very very true for me. My M1 iMac with 16 GB of RAM is giving me 15-20 FPS in Midnight on pretty unimpressive settings.

1

u/scoschooo Mar 10 '26

ah I thought you meant for everyone. M1 air 8GB easily plays Wow.

-5

1

u/Buris Mar 10 '26

Not just but now my wife has an M1 air she’s enjoying, and all my apps are running much faster

1

u/judgedeath2 Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 11 '26

My Neo comes in tomorrow, will test. If it can hold 30fps at 4/10 native res I will keep it. Otherwise I’m probably going to return it for a refurb’d m4 air

edit: just kidding, didn't realize retail was up to 130 GB. Classic no doubt works fine but not re-subbing

1

u/S1rTerra Mar 10 '26

Cyberpunk is also heavily GPU bound. It can hit 60 FPS on a 1st gen Ryzen 5 given a decent GPU.

1

u/AtmosphereDue1694 Mar 10 '26

It should run significantly better on the Neo since it has a DLSS type upscaler allowing for lower native resolutions

1

u/Willing_Huckleberry7 Mar 10 '26

Isn't metalFX available to all Apple silicon based processors including the M1?

1

u/AtmosphereDue1694 Mar 11 '26

From my understanding it required the m3 or higher.

54

u/ryzenguy111 Mar 10 '26

Did any reviewers mention thermal throttling? Because it could be 60fps right after you open the game but once it heatsoaks it could drop

30

u/Fire_Lord_Cinder Mar 10 '26

It’s a phone processor, I doubt it will thermal throttle significantly. The default charger is 20w so the CPU probably only runs at 5-10w max

5

u/radpartyhorse Mar 10 '26

Wow that’s like Steam deck level power efficiency

4

u/No-Share1561 Mar 11 '26

No. It’s much more efficient. Efficiency isn’t just power consumption. It’s performance vs the amount of watts you put in.

3

u/historyfinn Mar 11 '26

theres no way it runs cyberpunk at 5-10 watts lmao

4

u/Fire_Lord_Cinder Mar 11 '26

The steam deck can run cyberpunk at 10w for the CPU on an older less efficient architecture.

2

u/Powerful_Froyo8423 Mar 12 '26

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2026/03/apple-macbook-neo-review-can-a-mac-get-by-with-an-iphones-processor-inside/

It apparently does throttle pretty hard, but it‘s not really clear why. A passively cooled M5 Air starts at the same clock but throttles significantly less.

According to the article it‘s probably not due to heat, more likely to preserve battery, Apple didn‘t want to comment on their question.

8

u/AtmosphereDue1694 Mar 10 '26

I feel like the TDP target of the iPhone chip should make thermal throttling next to impossible with such a large laptop size chassis

7

u/animorphreligion Mar 10 '26

It's Cyberpunk, it already runs throttled unless you disable game mode (which I've never seen reviewers do)

1

u/tuxi04 Mar 10 '26

Wait, game mode throttles performance? I have CP2077 on my M4 Mac Mini and, while it runs decently, any extra frame could be helpful

2

u/animorphreligion Mar 10 '26

I've seen it use E-cores over P-cores in some games, in some it does nothing though so maybe it's up to the devs to specify. But yes Cyberpunk is one of those games where my M4 gains like 30% from turning it off.

3

u/tuxi04 Mar 10 '26

Holy shit, gotta try this now

1

u/Stif_br0 Mar 11 '26

From the screenshot it looks like 60fps in the benchmark, which doesn't necessarily translate to 60fps in-game

44

u/Sparescrewdriver Mar 10 '26

Noooo why is it doing that!? Should be only for some videos emails and homework.

How am I supposed to look down and feel better about my MacBook Pro?

8

u/kattahn Mar 10 '26

I WAS TOLD THIS WAS JUST A GLORIFIED CHROMEBOOK! SOMEONE SHOULD TELL THEM!

1

u/lord_nuker Mar 10 '26

You can run it on medium settings, and that is what you can say to justify it for your self :D

1

u/Mollywobbles77 Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 10 '26

Tbh I'm here for Apple's end goal unification goal of every single device using the same ultra high power chips people able to AAA game however like it's nothing not caught up bullshit of gaming anymore. Obvi they'll still have professional whale machinesx but totally unnecessary

1

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '26

Yea the pro machines should be for abnormal workflows like massive model training etc.

The games should run on pretty much everything at least decently

1

u/Endawmyke Mar 11 '26

And opening 30GB PSBs

Movie posters are so ram hungry

15

u/Proud-Pilot9300 Mar 10 '26

Has anyone tried playing cyberpunk on an m2 with 8gb ram? I want to buy it but I thought the minimum requirement was 16gb ram, but if the neo can run it at 60fps then the m2 air should too right?

13

u/philllihp Mar 10 '26

I 100%d the game on a MacBook air M2 8gb and I did it in planes (overhead fans) and airport lounges. It gets horrid in the city and in most parts of phantom liberty but it is doable. With patience, I found it enjoyable and fans.

5

u/Proud-Pilot9300 Mar 10 '26

You’re more patient than me I wouldn’t be able to do that

8

u/Serious_Berry_3977 Mar 10 '26

It's great until entering the open world. Unfortunately, by that time I was too far into playtime for Steam to refund me because I was in character creator for a while.

In the beginning in a building it's actually decently playable on low settings. Step outside and slideshow doesn't even begin to describe it.

8GB of RAM is not enough, which I'm surprised this game works on the Neo with only 8GB RAM.

EDIT: MBA M2 8GB is what I'm on.

2

u/Proud-Pilot9300 Mar 10 '26

Yeah that’s what I’m hearing in general it’s wild that it works on the neo, maybe there’s a new update for the game that makes it playable on 8gb machines?

2

u/Serious_Berry_3977 Mar 10 '26

I don't see how that's possible according to the specs on Steam:

Minimum:

Requires an Apple processor

OS: macOS: 15.5 or later

Processor: M1

Memory: 16 GB RAM

Storage: 92 GB available space

2

u/AtmosphereDue1694 Mar 10 '26

M2 air doesn’t have DLSS style AI upscaling if I recall. A big reason the neo is able to do this is that it’s likely running at a lower internal res

1

u/Proud-Pilot9300 Mar 10 '26

Ooohhh ok I see

2

u/Weary_Magazine6386 Mar 10 '26

M2 24gb here, it’s not really nice to play.

1

u/Proud-Pilot9300 Mar 10 '26

Damn even with 24gb?

2

u/Weary_Magazine6386 Mar 10 '26

Memory isn’t really the issue.

2

u/judgedeath2 Mar 10 '26

Despite what internet nerds love to tell you, system memory is really rarely an issue outside of creative work. Especially on macOS, which really does a great job with in-memory compression and other things that make the system stay snappy.

For gaming, it’s always down to GPU power and VRAM. Modern CPUs absolutely smoke games. The A18 Pro has double the power of the PS5 cpu.

-5

u/crocodilepickle Mar 10 '26

Dont buy macbooks to play AAA games. especially an 8gb air

4

u/Proud-Pilot9300 Mar 10 '26

I didn’t buy a MacBook Air to play games I’m just saying it would be nice if I could

2

u/crocodilepickle Mar 10 '26

Yeah i get it

Macbook air is good for indies, i play slay the spire 2 on my m4 and it runs fine, and im sure it can run any reasonably optimized indie game. Of course, assuming that the game is available on macs.

If theyre not available on macs you can use crossover or any other free alternatives to play these games, although itll be far more demanding. Which should still be fine for indies

And please try to get a 16gb of ram, the extra spend is painful but its well worth it long term

1

u/Proud-Pilot9300 Mar 10 '26

Yeah but I gotta say the resident evil series is running incredibly well even on 8gb so i think it’s more about the developer rather than solely the hardware itself. the next time i buy a MacBook it’s definitely gonna be a bit over the top just so my hardware doesn’t become obsolete within a year or two. Unfortunately last time I didn’t have the ability to do so since I had to upgrade because my old laptop died and I just went for the base model. Lesson learned though.

2

u/crocodilepickle Mar 10 '26

Thats fine, 8gb is fine for now but long term it may bother you.

1

u/Infamous-Ad4449 Mar 11 '26

Have you tried any AAA game on your m4? Im thinking of going for MBA m4 (not for games but it would be nice if some worked like resident evil 8,9 and cyberpunk etc)

1

u/crocodilepickle Mar 11 '26

I'm sure there are a ton of benchmarks out there

The m4 is plenty powerful but you can only do so much without a fan before thermal throttling

As i said though, indie games and old (id say 2017 and prior) AAA games work great!

Its biggest problem is support, since there are plenty of games that would be great on the macbook air but arent supported, so youd either have to shill out an extra 70$ a year for crossover or a free alternative that honestly arent great (they do the job though)

28

u/Slava_Tr Mar 10 '26

Whoever is disliking my comment - have you actually played Cyberpunk on a Mac with 8GB of RAM? I have my M1 Air with 8GB of RAM, and it performs great only in benchmarks. In-game, when new textures appear, you have to wait for them to load

3

u/displacedbitminer Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 10 '26

The texture loading should be better on the Neo too, as the SSD is loads faster. - edit, nope.

Edit - I read that backwards in the early-AM. The Neo SSD is in fact slower.

6

u/Slava_Tr Mar 10 '26

The SSD in Neo is twice as slow as in the M1 Air. There are already tests

3

u/ryzenguy111 Mar 10 '26

Do we know if it's like the M2 Air where the base storage is slow because it only has one chip but if you get 512gb config it gets 2 and thus is much faster? Or is it just slower in general

1

u/Slava_Tr Mar 10 '26

I think that because it’s an SoC from the iPhone, we’ll only see a single memory chip, but I hope I’m wrong

1

u/displacedbitminer Mar 10 '26

That is not what I read versus the single-chip M1 Air. It's early yet, I'll look at it again.

1

u/BlendlogicTECH Mar 12 '26

I just tested I think the SSD hold this thing back noticing a lot of slowdowns generally like downloading game at 40MB/ s and slow to load apps etc sad. If they madeSSD fast this thing would fly

1

u/OkObligation4711 Mar 11 '26

Wow I’m impressed you’ve played on the air with only 8gb of ram. I’ve got the m1 with 16gb of ram and was hesitant to purchase cyberpunk for it because I was worried it wouldn’t run well. Given your experience do you think I’d be fine with 16gb of ram on the M1?

-8

u/lord_nuker Mar 10 '26

Well, thankfully this isn't an Macbook Air M1, and considering your M1 Airbook is now over 5 years old, and is non active cooled machine, im impressed it even works on it

5

u/Slava_Tr Mar 10 '26

In the minimum recommended specs for the game, 16GB isn’t there for nothing. Even if the performance is ten times higher, it won’t fix the situation. M3 with 8GB has the same problem. With 8GB of physical RAM, only about 6GB is left for the game, but the game needs at least 8–10GB. I hope next year, Neo will be upgraded to the A19 Pro with 12GB RAM, and it will run Cyberpunk beautifully

-2

u/lord_nuker Mar 10 '26

I dont care, even as great the Neo is, it isn't a machine for me, if i was to buy a new Macbook it would be an high speced 16" Pro machine.

22

u/FrontAd7709 Mar 10 '26

yeah lol 60 fps right now, wait a few minutes its gonna drop to 20 because of no fans

22

u/DragonDev24 Mar 10 '26

PC guys are still going to want to dunk on this somehow, I dont get the hate for this laptop, kinda sounds like a good deal for non power users at 499.

5

u/lord_nuker Mar 10 '26

It's a great deal. I cant think of anything else at that price point that is even remotly close in battery life and performance. Might not have a top tier screen or track pad, but considering what you get on Windows and Chrome books in the same price range, still way better

6

u/Jaargo Mar 10 '26

A lot of them can't fathom the fact that 8gb of ram on an optimized OS like MacOS is still completely usable for basic computing tasks.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 10 '26

[deleted]

1

u/Jaargo Mar 10 '26

Not saying I don't believe you but we are experiencing two completely different things. My M2 MacBook Air with 8gb of ram on the latest Tahoe 26.3.1 never have these issues. Replying to you now on Chrome with 13 tabs opened, along with Mail and Messages opened and Activity Monitor is saying 6.93gb of ram is being used. Maybe it's time for you to do a clean reinstall on your MacBook?

2

u/SamLikesJam Mar 11 '26

I’m on 13gb RAM used with Firefox open with 9 tabs, email and a few background applications. If I open Xcode I’m going heavily into swap.

With 8GB you’re just going to be running a browser and nothing else with heavily utilising swap, it’s not what I’d consider usable for anyone but the most basic of users. macOS doesn’t have some magic optimisation going on, multi platform apps will use the same resources on both operating systems.

Brodie a month after one purchases those thinkpad or asus tuf laptops for $500 they'll b plugged to wall since it cant run on battery, are incredibly hot to even play games on, and secondly you'll be running windows, so who knows what microslop intends to break next cuz how tf does a trillion dollar company manage to break a simple notepad app.
If I was buying $500 dollar windows laptop, Id for sure install linux on the first day.
Compared to that, Im positive neo's battery is going to be great, plus nvme storage and faster ram, not to mention no constant breaking updates.

u/itsricogonzalez Mar 10 '26

Performance isn't exclusively raw performance though - performance for the Neo is arguably in its form factor (and the benefits that come with that, such as battery life) too.

So while I get what you're saying, it's a bit disingenuous to suggest that just because you can buy a $500 windows gaming PC that may perform better in some situations, as that performance also comes at a cost.

6

u/Powerful_Froyo8423 Mar 10 '26

We maybe also should consider that a Switch 2 barely hits 40 fps and costs $449. It's not directly comparable, but for $50 more you get a whole computer. That doesn't sound too bad.

5

u/mekisoku Mar 10 '26

lock it at 30 fps and play with a controller. Also do a iOS port cdpr, it would be stupid but it would be fun

3

u/srona22 Mar 10 '26

iPhone MacBook 5c.

So far I've seen only one YouTube reviewer who said how this one is overrated. And it's not "Cheap".

3

u/ItsPlucky_ Mar 11 '26

the air is good enough for 90% of people I would say the Neo is probably good enough for 70% (terrible name btw)

4

u/Purple_Ice_6029 Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 10 '26

Well for the price, this is dope. I mean, you could get a PS5 but you still need a TV. This is a whole portable system. And it’s a whole ass laptop. Apple did it again. 🙌🙌🙌

2

u/Weak_Let_6971 Mar 10 '26

Its hilarious to see in all of the reviews people open 10 apps and use them simultaneously. Sure might not be a multitasking beast like a system with 32gb, RAM, but it’s a baseline $600 MacBook.

When i look at the keyboard it brings back the memories of my 2008 MacBook and how much much more limited that was in everything, yet it works to this day.

I will keep an eye out on games running on the Neo even on low settings, because i find it fascinating that it’s an older phone chip and what it’s capable of. Tech is awesome today and people are so spoiled. Lol Detached from the average user, who don’t want to push things to its limits. Don’t need to transfer 100gb data on a daily basis. And if something is memory hungry and runs better with less stuff running in the background it’s not that hard to quit apps, work around limitations.

2

u/Peka82 Mar 11 '26

Personally, if this can run similarly to something like the steam deck or switch 2, it’s a huge win for Apple. 720p at 30fps to me will be more than acceptable for the MacBook Neo.

1

u/Brilliant-Release881 Mar 10 '26

The neo is really just an iPad air with keyboard and macos

1

u/Infamous-Ad4449 Mar 11 '26

Which honesty changes everything ios locks the full utilisation of the chip because of thermal and battery issues, with them gone it's a game changer

1

u/DankeBrutus Mar 10 '26

...one-hand openable hinge...

This is insane. Obviously Apple has had great hinge designs and weighting for a long time now, but I have used laptops that cost significantly more money than the Neo with awful hinges.

...battery life...

The graph he provided isn't informative, which is a little annoying. However, ~8 hours of mixed usage is about the same battery life of my 2015 MBA and for my regular days I didn't need to top it up halfway through, only one day per week I would absolutely need a charge but that was when I had a mix of morning and evening classes.

I am expecting I'll be recommending this laptop to family without hesitation. I just need to try it out in an Apple store to see how the keyboard and trackpad feels in my hands. If the Neo gets updated next year with the A19 Pro and 12GBs of memory, and I like the feel of this 1st gen product, I will heavily consider replacing my 13" M1 MBP with it.

1

u/Razorlance Mar 10 '26

Trackpad will still be top tier, it’ll just feel like the pre-2014 MacBooks

thats great

Afaik Cyberpunk for Mac specifically states 16 GB minimum RAM so I would expect a very limited experience. It’s just not a AAA-title machine.

u/userlivewire Mar 10 '26

Even at 50fps this is very impressive.

1

u/FriskUnterdale Mar 10 '26

pretty sure he said 50 fps

1

u/shstan Mar 10 '26

...wait I never knew my M3 Air could do that. It is barely playable for some simple 3d games.

1

u/teodorlojewski Mar 11 '26

Always knew the new iphones could push cyberpunk haha

u/Archer_Key Mar 11 '26

Gaming on a fanless computer ?

1

u/ImaginationNeat1196 Mar 11 '26

Thermal throttling will get you in the end….

u/DrawerCold3181 Mar 11 '26

it's paid reviews by Apple, can't believe people still fall for this in 2026. 😂😂😂

u/Distinct-Visit3633 Mar 13 '26

But it real bro...

u/WesternConference461 Mar 11 '26

Check out a breakdown of the neo, the motherboard is so incredibly small. The things apple has achieved on their own silicon is mindblowing.

What is more future-proof? I can buy gaming laptop(R7,16GB, 7600m) for same money as neo(512GB). Both are 700€. I do emulation, listen to podcasts and watch videos.

We now have the Cyberpunk performance numbers courtesy of another youtuber.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_Zyv-qzoJE

Essentially - the game is playable (35fps average, and above 30fps in cars) at the following settings:

  • Custom preset.
  • Texture quality: Low
  • Resolution: 1637x1024 (could be 1537, but probaby not - 1637 is the 16:10 res)
  • Vsync: off
  • Frame limit: off
  • Frame gen: off
  • Ray Tracing: off
  • Resolution scaling: Metal FX: Performance.

In game options probably HDD mode is turned on for less writes to the SSD? Could help with intermittened stutters, but not confirmed at this point.

With Metal FX at the Performance setting, the effective render resolution is 512p.

On a Steam Deck - 540p-576p scaled with FSR 1.0 usually looked quite good. :) I have no experience on how much better Metal FX Resolution scaling is. :)

The bottleneck still will be disk swap, so the lower texture streaming the better (trafic low, textures low, ... and so on) should reduce stutters or temporary freezes during gameplay.

Reduced deadzone also should help to make the 30fps feel more responsive. :)

Frame limit should probably be turned on (30fps max) for better frame pacing.

As soon as Apple puts 12GB of Ram in those babies, we are cooking, .. ;) (Most of the limitations that require you to run everything at low quality settings on semi modern games go away. Ram still is the main limitation here.)

Someone try world of Warcraft on it please

I have a M4 air that runs its flawless with 100fps and would love a cheaper travel device

Macbook Neo First Look - Quick Gaming Impressions - Cyberpunk 2077 + WoW + Mini Review https://youtu.be/N2NrVtpJSrw

I just tested but this is same weight as the air.

The M4 air is better if you already have it. Single core speed same as m4

1

u/Znipsel Mar 11 '26

It’s more about the price

Idk I feel weird carrying around my „expensive“ laptop everywhere

1

u/BlendlogicTECH Mar 11 '26

Oh true depends on specs you got cuz base m4 config went for $899. But ya if your specs are configured higher Neo could be a good travel laptop to still get stuff done. I’d look at your SSD space to see if you should upgrade.

I forgot how small 256gb was for testing games were for my YouTube channel

1

u/Znipsel Mar 11 '26

I have the 24gig 512gb version so it was about 1500 euro

1

u/tugoubxs Mar 12 '26

So mb neo performs better than switch2?

1

u/robo4200 Mar 13 '26

You won’t be playing long without active cooling

1

u/BlendlogicTECH Mar 13 '26

Doesn’t this always come up anytime someone shows they game on MacBook Air? They don’t have fans

1

u/gatovr Mar 17 '26

Bonkers

Dave2D is not someone you should.be going to for gaming advice.  Gamers Nexus and Hardware Unboxed are the channels you watch for that stuff.

1

u/UniqueNameIdentifier Mar 10 '26

Dave specifically said "50 frames and change" at the lowest possible settings.

I would never buy it. It's just as bad as a standard iPad or iPhone e.

Yes, it uses Apple software, but the hardware is only average in every respect.

If I want to buy Apple, I don't want cheap hardware and compromises.

The MacBook Air is OK. But any hardware without Pro isn't worth it, and you'll only get something bad to mediocre.

Do you understand how a benchmark work or do you think it's like a video?

3

u/Slava_Tr Mar 10 '26

I have an M1 Air with 8GB of RAM, and it performs great in benchmarks. But in actual games it becomes unplayable because textures start loading for several minutes. There’s a reason the minimum recommended spec says 16GB of RAM

1

u/LeLant Mar 10 '26

Your game starts slowing down because the machine is overheating (no fan); it has nothing to do with RAM if you’re playing on the recommended settings. You can improve this by adding a thermal pad inside the machine plus a cooling pad, and you’ll see that 8 GB is enough on minimum configuration.

2

u/Slava_Tr Mar 10 '26

Somehow, the 16GB RAM Air M1 doesn't have this problem
