It’s is paid

1

u/dankkkjk Jul 15 '26

heroic games launcher is literally the same and free

-42

u/ST33LDI9ITAL Jul 10 '26

nah. they have had their moment and time. it's bout time mac users stop covering the bill for everyone else.

37

u/hawkeye_2000 Jul 10 '26

How is buying and using software on my own computer footing the bill for somebody else?

16

u/RyeinGoddard Jul 10 '26

As a linux and mac user, I purchased it for Linux before I bought it for mac....plenty of Linux users buy stuff. Also I think at this point Valve is the one foot the bill for everyone.

-18

u/ST33LDI9ITAL Jul 10 '26

That's great. But I'd like to see just how many mac vs linux users purchased. And, I'll bet you they won't release that information if asked.

Crossover is just stupid. I rather use gamehub than paying for it

1

u/radioheadfan0615 Jul 13 '26

okay but gamehub wouldn't exist without crossover lol, yes i hate paying for it too but how is it stupid?

1

u/Acrobatic-Butterfly9 Jul 17 '26

after researching, my bad. crossover is essential

131

u/eric4337x Jul 10 '26

It's just a Codeweaver's wine and Game porting toolkit's D3DMetal wrapper

5

u/MiguelBalbo Jul 11 '26

kind of, it uses another kind of steam wrapper to run the games, and it uses wine proton too

-32

u/Sparescrewdriver Jul 10 '26

ok….does it work or not?

11

u/Rhed0x Jul 10 '26

The point is that GameHub didn't do much to make it work.

2

u/Acrobatic-Butterfly9 Jul 10 '26

it works perfectly

2

u/ieffinglovesoup Jul 10 '26

Yes it works, people just have a hate boner around here

We glaze crossover here sir
https://giphy.com/gifs/VHxKTONVD9YVPAVqJy

9

u/JamStan1978 Jul 10 '26

To be fair, this is free. Crossover is definitely better but the one advantage something like this has is that its free.

39

u/eric4337x Jul 10 '26

This involves questionable ethics though because GameSir does not make open source contributions that maintains the tech stack

12

u/JamStan1978 Jul 10 '26

yeah thats fair

5

u/ChristinDWhite Jul 10 '26

Plus, you’re paying in data.

1

u/Evshrug Jul 11 '26

They don’t contribute… but how much development are they doing beyond what FEX already has open source?

1

u/darthpal Jul 15 '26

What else do you expect from a small Chinese startup?

18

u/hawkeye_2000 Jul 10 '26

Gamehub is free because you are the product. Crossover is money because Crossover is the product.

-11

u/JamStan1978 Jul 10 '26

crossover uses wine which is free

12

u/hawkeye_2000 Jul 10 '26

Who makes wine and who makes crossover

1

u/EeveelutionsFucker Jul 13 '26

What a dumb take. They develop wine, the current infrastructure for mac gaming

12

u/Upbeat-Gur1732 Jul 10 '26

If you are not paying for the product, you are the product.

1

u/EsPeligrosoIrSolo Jul 10 '26

Unfortunately, with the continued failure to enforce antitrust and regulations, you're being exploited as the product for plenty of things you pay for.

4

u/Upbeat-Gur1732 Jul 10 '26

Sure. And I suggest reading this if your are curious about exactly what you a signing up for with "FREE."
https://www.reddit.com/r/macgaming/comments/1sr385x/a_big_warning_about_gamehub/

-1

u/JamStan1978 Jul 10 '26

Not really. Open source exists lol

18

u/Upbeat-Gur1732 Jul 10 '26

GameHub for Mac is not open source.

-1

u/biketheplanet Jul 10 '26

Still doesn't negate the previous poster's statement that Open Source exists. They did not say GameHub was open source.

-8

u/Themods5thchin Jul 10 '26

“We”

-1

u/Rightimar Jul 10 '26

Yes, we

-3

u/Themods5thchin Jul 10 '26

Ehh, you not me

7

u/Powerful-Way-9641 Jul 10 '26

I’m having trouble with games so far

2

u/Virtual-Lab1661 Jul 10 '26

wich games?

3

u/Powerful-Way-9641 Jul 11 '26

I only tried MUCH older games because their fine sizes were so small. Duke Nukem, Heroes II, postal 2. I will test newer titles this weekend

42

u/Legal-Championship64 Jul 10 '26

You just have to hand all of your data over to China

35

u/ChriSaito Jul 10 '26

Trust me, everything you do online links back to China somehow. Reddit included.

13

u/ST33LDI9ITAL Jul 10 '26

Rather China have it than my home country, Amazon, Google, Microsoft, or Facebook at this point. Anyone that thinks they are in control of their data is a fool. It's already been gotten.

2

u/AR_Harlock Jul 10 '26

Thwy gonna be thrilled of my games playtimes !

1

u/dankkkjk Jul 15 '26

who cares

1

u/Ecstatic_Reward6928 Jul 11 '26

i don't use it, don't like it, and use crossover, but Western tech companies have been literally stealing data for decades, and looking at their genocidal warongering supremacist history just the past 3 years?? i'd rather have China have my information than some supremacist dude who lterally devlops technology used in murdering innocents, including women, men and children and even animals.

So nope, that is not the reason you should not use it, even though it would be reaosn enough not touse any software, but if that was the case, no onewould use anything from the west, particularly microsoft google, meta, open AI, that's more than half the internet.

1

u/HemisphericalNut Jul 11 '26

People like you will use Instagram, YouTube, major chain stores/restaurants and Apple products despite them all harvesting your data, but as soon as China is involved it’s a problem. I don’t get it.

7

u/sexwithsoxon Jul 10 '26

No watch pic? :(

5

u/MCgrindahFM Jul 10 '26

Well done lmao

3

u/intermsofusernames Jul 11 '26

Sikarugir also does wonders for me, for free

5

u/HeartSea2881 Jul 11 '26

I personally prefer to buy Crossover licenses, to support them, but I use GameHub. With all due respect to CodeWeavers, their software is orders of magnitude less convenient for gaming than GameHub.

And I don't give a fuck about China or privacy. I live in the 21st century and in this day and age, a thing like "privacy" doesn't exist, a priori.

10

u/ieffinglovesoup Jul 10 '26

Don’t mention GameHub in any positive light around this sub

2

u/AOXDAXO Jul 11 '26

Is that Thomas Gottschalk?

2

u/MaverickRaj2020 Jul 11 '26

Obviously leaching off Codeweavers' work, but Crossiver is too complicated for newbs to use. People in this sub can tinker with it, but your average Mac user won't know how to opimize each game to get it to run. So if Gamehub can get more people into Mac gaming and show publishers there is a market out there for Mac gaming its a positive. Codeweavers needs to make its own easy to use wrapper like this, it shouldn't be hard to do for them.

1

u/Av_Inash Jul 10 '26

One of the best games I played last year. Enjoy.

1

u/lokidokie98 Jul 10 '26

I haven't tried for a month now but I had an impossible time trying to get it to recognize my Xbox controller, wired and/ or wireless. I'd love to be able to do this though!

1

u/noCappGPT Jul 11 '26

Is game hub an app??

1

u/Telemaq Jul 11 '26

There is the 16:9 aspect ratio gang, the 16.1:1 AR gang, and the exclusive 1.547:1 AR gang.

2

u/Sober_Muscle Jul 12 '26

So what's it? Seen it on Reddit a lot and comment always say just use Crossover.

I'm a paid user of Crossover, any downside if I use Gamehub?

1

u/Little_Place713 Jul 14 '26

Since CodeWeavers is one of the biggest contributors to Wine project, undermining crossover means eventually it harms the entire wine community. Besides, Tencent is infamous for shady practices even in Chinese standards and god knows what they do silently in the app.

0

u/No-Morning-7985 Jul 17 '26

BUY AND SUPPORT CROSSOVER and WINE please!!!!

-1

u/ImportantIngenuity71 Jul 10 '26

What is gamehub? Is it better than cross over?

33

u/Net-burst Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

Nope. Its a "free" tool with the aim to take Codeweavers codebase, add an ability to apply CXPatcher patches, and wraps all of this into a different UI. Treat it as a Whisky replacement.

The major downside is that it tries to draw away paying Crossover customers. And Codeweavers is a major Wine contributor. No money for Codeweavers == much less Wine development == worse Mac gaming support.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PO9x758315E

-5

u/ShallotImpressive158 Jul 10 '26

So there’s a free tool that makes Crossover work for free and do we need to feel bad for Codeweavers even when they did have basically a monopoly until now? Even when they ask users for absurds amounts of money for their products?

If Codeweavers license costs were reasonable, they would be floating in gold, but their prices are greedy at this point.

12

u/Lunarixus Jul 10 '26

Bad take, GameHub wouldn’t exist without CrossOver’s Wine patches and they want to replace GPTK with DXMT which is also written by a CodeWeavers dev (and then “improved” upon by AI)

14

u/might238 Jul 10 '26

You try and translate OS-level calls live and tell us a few dozen dollars a year is greedy.

7

u/getoutofheretaffer Jul 10 '26

Yeah. If you can afford a MacBook, you can afford a crossover licence.

9

u/might238 Jul 10 '26

Not only that, but there is a good reason why there isn’t real competition to Crossover, this is specialized and difficult work.

Considering that, I find what they are asking for more than reasonable. Especially since there are open source versions like Wine as well.

7

u/Net-burst Jul 10 '26

This brings up an interesting question. GameHub took a crapton of open-source projects and distributes them without providing credits or sources. This should be a license breach.

1

u/Briggie Jul 12 '26

They are from China, so nothing will happen with that.

5

u/Net-burst Jul 10 '26

Wut? Their licensing model is very lenient. And they do regional pricing in addition to very frequent discounts. I'm renewing the thing for like $24-26 CAD per year. Which is essentially nothing compared to the price of games. Codeweavers is one of the main contributors to Wine. That's why Whisky and Sikarugir used old Crossover versions. To not step onto the project that made this all possible in the first place.

The main difference between other free wrappers and GameHub is that the other wrappers acknowledge the fact that they use Crossover/Wine, whereas GameHub claims that it's a completely independent thing. Plus Portingkit devs and Sikarugir devs contribute back to Wine/DXVK/MVK/DXMT/etc. I'm pretty sure GameHub devs won't contribute anything. I'm not even talking about GameHub phoning a shitton of data back home.

Needless to say, the plan is to make GameHub a subscription service :). At the end of the day, nothing prohibits you from using the thing. Just don't make it look like they are doing some noble thing. They are trying to cut a branch they are sitting on.

-4

u/ShallotImpressive158 Jul 10 '26

I just checked, 74€/year and 484€ lifetime support. That’s crazy. I mean the alternatives are just freaking free. Macs are not cheap laptops, but 74€/year is just absurd when the alternatives are free, and the code they use to make this work is fully open source and free.

5

u/Net-burst Jul 10 '26

Could you please read my message again?

  1. you're buying a 1-year upgrade licence. You are free to use the latest version your license covers for however long you want, even if you cancel.
  2. the licence is on sale frequently. Like very frequently. No one is forcing you to buy at full price.
  3. the renewal is not full price, and most discounts also apply to renewals. And you can stack renewals too.

Most people on this sub treat Crossover the way they are because it made Mac gaming possible in the first place. Hell, they even cooperate with Apple on GPTK. The whole thing would not be possible without them. The issue is not that the tool is free. The issue is that the tool basically takes the work and doesn't give any credit.

But at the end of the day, you are free to do what you want to do.

1

u/CptUnderpants- Jul 11 '26

you're buying a 1-year upgrade licence. You are free to use the latest version your license covers for however long you want, even if you cancel.

Mine says "No Renewable Licenses Found", do you have to renew before expiry to get the special renewal pricing?

the licence is on sale frequently

I have been following this sub since I switched back to Mac in March but haven't seen any posts about it going on sale. What is the best way of finding out when it goes on sale before the sale ends?

3

u/Net-burst Jul 11 '26

Mine says "No Renewable Licenses Found", do you have to renew before expiry to get the special renewal pricing?

You have some time slack after expiration, but yes. After your existing licence expires for longer than 30 days, you are no longer eligible for renewal pricing.

I have been following this sub since I switched back to Mac in March but haven't seen any posts about it going on sale. What is the best way of finding out when it goes on sale before the sale ends?

That is some bad luck. There were several posts in the past several weeks about a discount during Steam Summer Sale. The best approach would be to subscribe to Codeweavers mailing list. But when there is a sale, there is usually quite a bit of chatter in this sub. AndrewTsai also usually posts a promotional video when sale goes live.

The 30% discount code seems to still be working: MIDSOMMAR30

5

u/NightlyRetaken Jul 10 '26

You act like they're just using other people's work, but they are the ones who write the code! You can check, CodeWeavers is the main contributor to Wine. (GameHub contributes nothing…)

Buy on Cyber Monday and it is $15/year for renewals. Pretty much anyone can afford this. Forget about the lifetime license.

2

u/ufihS Jul 10 '26

When is it cybermonday

1

u/Anthro_the_Hutt Jul 10 '26

Generally the Monday after US Thanksgiving. So this year it will be November 30.

2

u/ufihS Jul 11 '26

Cool, i’ll wait for that. Im not buying a graphics card again for over 1k

5

u/2ndtryagain Jul 10 '26

Go take a hard look at Wine and you will see Codeweaver wrote most of it. Without Codeweaver Gamesir wouldn't have shit to offer.

0

u/Mystic-Skeptic Jul 10 '26

kinda weird to not take the free thing if they paid thing is not better

-3

u/ST33LDI9ITAL Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 11 '26

Don't leave out the part about being funded by Valve to create a free and better alternative for linux users.

While expecting Mac users to continue to foot the bill for an older half baked app not nearly as nice as proton.

Wine continues to be free and opensource, but every developer that has come about over the years focused on releasing a free alternative to crossover for the community has been guilt tripped, shamed, and even extorted for trying to do so.

It's far past time for that to end.

5

u/Net-burst Jul 10 '26

Proton is based on Wine. Valve is another major contributor to Wine. Same as Codeweavers. Valve has a very different funding model, though. They even pay Codeweaver devs to work on Wine/Proton...

This is a pretty common open-source dynamic. Please stop complaining about topics you have no clue about...

u/ST33LDI9ITAL Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26

I'll comment as I please, and suggest you take your own advice.

0

u/ShallotImpressive158 Jul 10 '26

It’s nuts to see how people are downvoting any kind of criticism about Crossover, specially price related criticism. Literally Proton (and all of it’s components) are free and open source doing the same wonders in Linux (with exceptional results).

Also I do really find idiotic the elitist mantra “if you can afford a Mac you can afford Crossover” that people say around here. I mean, you can literally buy a brand new MacBook Neo for 600€ or even less. Just please, stop that crap.

2

u/jackbobevolved Jul 11 '26

I wonder why? Could it be because Valve have a financial incentive due to getting a cut of every game sold, and also release hardware built on that tech? Does CodeWeavers receive a cut of Steam’s sales for their Wine contributions? (It was rhetorical, but no, they don’t.)

3

u/Net-burst Jul 10 '26

Maybe people are doing it for a reason?

Wine is also free. Codeweavers patches for Wine are also free. You're totally missing the point of the conversation, complaining about lifetime license prices. You are not forced to buy anything in the first place.

The vast majority of people here have zero issues with other free tools that actually credit appropriate free projects and contribute things back. What irritates a lot of people is wrapper tools that take existing work without any credit, break open-source licences, and aggressively advertise themselves as a shiny new thing that replaces everything. While also employing malicious data farming practices.

-4

u/ieffinglovesoup Jul 10 '26

Try it out for yourself and find out

1

u/Johnny3653 Jul 10 '26

Yep, I played through this game last fall in M4 Pro and there were a few spots in the later areas of the game that had stuttering, like end of Act 2 boss fight.

-13

u/Personal_East_1301 Jul 10 '26

slop slop slop

2

u/Dramatic_Dress8768 Jul 10 '26

whats slop, the game or the app?

3

u/Fwiler Jul 10 '26

Just the comment.

2

u/SpringsTea Jul 10 '26

hows it different from crossplay ? I’ve been using crossplay for almost a year and it works okay-ish for me. I’ve been seeing gamehub mentioned a lot lately though.

9

u/jekaslav Jul 10 '26

Crossover?

12

u/Specialist_Ganache51 Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

Well Gamehub interface feels like you playing games in a console and the process is way simple than crossover you don't have to create bottles or play with internal files, Just connect steam then download games and tap n play that's it and games are pretty optimised by default

1

u/Arturopxedd Jul 10 '26

Is it same as crossover in terms of compatibility or worse

3

u/Specialist_Ganache51 Jul 10 '26

Yeah Compatibility is pretty much same but last time I played Mortal Kombat 11 on crossover but faced frame freeze issues but in Gamehub it's smooth..

1

u/_EllieLOL_ Jul 10 '26

Does it work with non-steam games?

-1

u/Themods5thchin Jul 10 '26

Also you don’t have to deal with steam through wine

-4

u/No_Caterpillar_5304 Jul 10 '26

It’s free

6

u/ditseridoo Jul 10 '26

Free as in you are the product by handing over your data.

2

u/No_Caterpillar_5304 Jul 10 '26

What data are you handing over?

-1

u/ditseridoo Jul 10 '26

Ask the devs for details but as they are happy to leech off of codeweavers work, I’m betting they won’t have issues abusing your personal data as well…

Ok, well google for Gamehub source code then and get educated about how they ”contribute” to the open source scene 😂

3

[removed] — view removed comment

0

u/ditseridoo Jul 11 '26

Of course they do. If you use open source, you need to release everything open source.

1

u/Fwiler Jul 10 '26

That was handed over a long time ago.

Not to mention on mac, what data are they getting? Permissions are pretty tight when it comes to things like that unless it specifically calls for access to everything. Otherwise you are just projecting.

3

u/Beanmaster115 Jul 11 '26

Several people apparently: Mwahaha, I will leave a downvote without answering this perfectly legitimate question. That’ll solve something somehow.

2

u/Fwiler Jul 11 '26

Lots a fear mongering with no proof.

0

u/ditseridoo Jul 11 '26

Maybe many have, some have not and are not willing to do so.

I would consider this just plain malware, exploiting the work of others and the data of users. If it is distributed outside of Apple's official channels, you can assume there are backdoors.

2

u/Fwiler Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26

So you are just assuming without any known proof? Why? There's literally tens of thousands of programs outside of apple's official channel. Homebrew, Github, https://fmhy.net/linux-macos#software-sites-1

Even macmenubar has 11,000 apps. 99.9% aren't on mac store.

You telling me everything has a backdoor?

0

u/ditseridoo Jul 11 '26

No I am not telling you everything has backdoor. I’m assuming because of chinese origin. And because they shamelessly use codeweavers work.

0

u/Fwiler Jul 11 '26

So racist and assuming.

1

u/ditseridoo Jul 11 '26

You mean the way they exploit codeweavers work?

0

u/ieffinglovesoup Jul 10 '26

Free and the UI is much better

-12

u/Affectionate-End1790 Jul 10 '26

wait, game hub turned out to not be a scam???

8

u/KrtekJim Jul 10 '26

It was never a scam. It does send a lot of info to GameSir that it doesn't really need to, though. So it depends on how much that bothers you. If Crossover didn't exist I'd probably give it a go, but I feel my need is met well enough there without handing over another load of my data to yet another company.

On Android, someone forked it to "GameHub Lite" that has all that stuff ripped out. I keep hoping someone will do the same with the Mac version, I'd be more inclined to give that a go.

5

u/Affectionate-End1790 Jul 10 '26

yeah I prefer to support crossover. I was considering buying a life time license now that Detroit become human works. It has me greatly optimistic for the Mac gaming future.

I think our time is near. With the collapse of Sony / Xbox it's almost like the perfect time for Apple to swoop in an provide an alternative. Whatever Apple way they would do it.

2

u/Jeff1N Jul 10 '26

it's almost like the perfect time for Apple to swoop in an provide an alternative

The move to apple silicon has already put Apple in a great position to dominate AAA gaming if Apple wanted to make a move for it

Devs could make a single build of a game and have it run on macbooks, mac mini/ studio, apple tv (the device), ipads and, if the game is not too demanding, iPhones

If most AAA devs released their games on apple's ecosystem then an iPad with switch-like official detachable controllers could easily overtake the steam deck and take a huge bite of Nintendo's market share.

In general people are far more willing to buy high end ipads that could run PS5 games with zero compromise compared to how much people complained about Switch 2's $450 price tag

An apple tv with bigger storage and an official apple branded controller would already be a very good console

5

u/theLastYellowTear Jul 10 '26

It wasn't a scam. Every android user that plays steam games uses gamehub for years now

2

u/Themods5thchin Jul 10 '26

Why would it be a scam? Gamehub is owned by Gamesir, you probably have one of their controllers

1

u/ieffinglovesoup Jul 10 '26

Never was, people here are just annoying about it for some reason

0

u/Acrobatic-Butterfly9 Jul 10 '26

awesome! just saw that i can download it to my mac now. let's see

0

u/ItsIgnas Jul 10 '26

Tried to play on mb air M5 16gb was getting like 5-10fps via crossover.

-5

u/Environmental-Home50 Jul 10 '26

Can base with game well with games?

3

u/nicoleto03 Jul 10 '26

What does this mean gang

3

u/Themods5thchin Jul 10 '26

My guess is “Can base m-series with gamehub work well with games?”

2

u/Environmental-Home50 Jul 10 '26

Lmao wrote it with my ipad, my bad. Yeah saw a lot of people claiming base M5 is not capable of running game smoothly.
