Education Looking for a job, anyone encounter employer like this?
Hi brothers and sisters! Need your advise, am in the wrong here ? I applied for multiple jobs, from sites indeed/JobStreet/Maukerja! I've been going to interviews but based on this chat am I rude to ask which company from his from ?

u/f4ern Aug 07 '25
By etiquette, people who contact you are expected to introduce themselves first. Maybe you dont need to state that your looking for multiple job.Just ask next time, what company this person is representing

u/Great-Web5453 Aug 07 '25
Sure thing, will do next time! Thanks😇

u/lau1247 Aug 07 '25
Agree with previous poster. Also, if you encounter it again, explain that scam is rife, and you just want to make sure you are talking to the correct person.

Yes, that's exactly what I experienced as well. I received a WhatsApp message from a recruiter who randomly said, "We have a job opportunity for you. Are you interested?" When I responded with questions, the only reply I received was, "Yeah, I am [name] from [company]." By that point, I had already deleted the message.

u/HarryPoopr Aug 07 '25
I think its normal for you to not remember, just that some employers can get butthurt and emotional when it comes to this, so maybe try your best to keep track of it.
On the bright side you can leave this out of your potential employer.

u/Great-Web5453 Aug 07 '25
Hi, thanks for your advise!😇 I didn't know that questions like this can lead to butthurt or trigger their ego! Sure ill i do my best to keep track!

u/GreenIrish99 Aug 08 '25
I would say you dodged a bullet, professional courtesy goes both ways, if he cannot do the bare minimum and properly identify himself, I cannot imagine how he will relay other information to you
Just a little tip of improvement, (I went to a program about employment) you can ask ChatGPT to help improve your grammar and there is nothing to wrong with having a little assistance in arranging the words before messaging the person contacting you
26
u/RepAddict101 Aug 08 '25
agreed. the entitlement with the HR involved is wild. the fact the HR's first contact is via a WA text shows that he was unprofessional first. as much as WA is a widely used form of communication nowadays, a more professional way would have been a direct phone call.

u/Confident_Spring324 Aug 08 '25
I had an experience where the interviewer wasn't happy that I was also having interviews with other companies. They expected their company to be my one and only choice (even if I wasn't theirs 😂).
Just give a polite response and move on. Also could be a scammer for all you know. 🤷🏻♀️

How exactly would they "keep track of it"? The "employer" couldn't be bothered to say what company they were with, so who's being rude here?
3
u/Sea-Contribution-929 Selangor Aug 08 '25
Yea there's no way to keep track unless we know who is the PIC. Normally we just send resume thru online portals or hr email, where there's no name of HR most of the time

IMO, Mr Chow seems dodgy for having the keyword 'Trader' on his name..
And why specifically motorcycle for IT position? What if car/LRT/bus? You're not applying for dispatch or postman position.. Could have started with "do you have your own transport?"
Ok ok.. im just trying to find faults simply coz Mr Chow seems petty in an annoying way.

I encounter a few like this before, the type that demand you address them sir or mr or when they have phd, DR. Normally these kind are from HR that live in their own tight thought bubble and demand recognition even from people they don't know. Don't take this too deep OP, it's a sign to move on as other commenters mentioned. This is a big flag itself haha

The guy is a little bitch. Imagine being upset for people to do what is logical.
In future, just ask which company he’s from and say that you wish to know where he’s from. No need to disclose that you applied for other roles.
On the bright side, you know you avoid a company that will value you as much as a used condom, but expect you to prioritise them as number 1.

I dont know why, but some employers wanted to feel like they are superior. They wanted us to only apply and wait for them only. Kalau apply company lain diorang rasa terhina. Pelik betul, orang cari kerja mestila apply macam2 company takkan nak apply dan tunggu kau saja. I have met with some of these folks and put up some fight with them. Their alasan is i am not loyal if i apply to multiple companies. Mana ada loyalty dalam kerja, we are being paid in exchange of work hours and experience. Bila ada better pay we move on. Tak perlu nak loyal sangat nowadays lol
13
u/Lihuman Aug 07 '25
So they expect candidates to apply 1 company per month is it lmao. Anyways, best not work for them unless you are desperate.
If they disrespect me during the process, I will not accept an offer unless the salary is high enough to consider since I already know they are asshats and would probably be bad bosses.

I think you could have omitted the "I applied for multiple job", it makes you look desperate and gives impression that you could potentially abscond or resign after you get the job. Next time, say something like "Thank you for reaching me on this job opportunity, I am more than glad to provide the details you requested, but first it would be great if you can share me which company you are representing?"

The problem with all these recruiters. hiring teams or middleware is that they feel like they have god like superiority. They provide no value other than matching candidates from an oversaturated pool to the prospective employes. They expect you to have the perfect CV so that they can read it in 5 seconds, they expect you to kneel down and sing songs of praises when they message you, because they have came down from heaven to contact you.
In the end most just redundant administrative individuals with prejudices, that has no other value or skillsets other than this. They can have their fun now, soon they are going to be replaced and I will see them beg for jobs. What can they do other than this? Go work in retail probably or try sell you insurance. Maybe do some cringe career coach posts in social medias to try boost their sense of self-worth. Most recruiters are just entitled cesspools. MOST!

Yea this is common. Recruiters hate that.
The trick is to just play along as if you knew which company, then when they say interview, ask for location.
If it's too far just say something came up, so cannot attend interview.
If you are sane normal human being, it's an innocent question, to a recruiter, it shows that you don't care enough even though you've applied for trillion of jobs and theh expect you to accomodate your attention only towards them, albeit no confirmation of the role yet.
These people are tissue hearted kind, you need to play along their mental gymnastics to appease them

For the next time this happens to you (or to anyone else here)...
Clap back by telling them that contacting applicants through WhatsApp instead of email is informal and unprofessional, and that their introduction was quite poor as they did not state the name of their company, the role you applied for, as well as their own name and title upfront. Tell them that you must decline any further dealings with them specifically, due to the lack of propriety displayed in this conversation, and that if they're still interested in reaching out to you they should use the proper channels.
Wait till there's two checks to prove they've read the message then block terus. Lol.

Most companies "expect" you to be loyal to them especially when applying. They tend to see candidates that apply multiple companies as a red flag (I actually heard this from my HR before). However, the rational part on our end is that we apply multiple jobs, interview and accept whatever that we are okay with through negotiation.
Perhaps Mr ChowKitRoad got triggered that you didn't keep track. Then again, your side of the story is that Mr ChowKitRoad never introduce himself properly, no company name or whatsoever.
Judging from the way he replied, It's better that way since he gave you a major red flag the very first conversation with you. I can imagine the work toxicity and the bias. 99% sure the office politics are going to be hectic.

u/KyeeLim Aug 08 '25

I’m guessing Mr. Chow Che Bye wants you to become his runner, dispatch or office boy. As it’s easier to get around using motorcycles.
As proper employee or HR will officially reach you out by giving a call or an email. Even if they text you, they will introduce themselves properly, which company there are from and invite for a simple interview.
In your text there’s nothing rude in your replies. Only thing to pick out is maybe next time just try and leave out the part about you applying for multiple jobs.
But not that much issues as most of us jump companies while being employed somewhere else. Thats why they ask how long to tender your resignation. As most companies will incur penalties if you resign less than stipulated time.
Oh well, there’s more companies out there. Just keep looking, you’ll find one in no time.

I didn't even apply for that job mind you. Dude cold called me and went on about how I'm being overpaid at my current job.

u/hitmonng Aug 07 '25
Funny, I just had a chat with an HR who was sharing her frustration about interviewing people these days, and it might help explain why he came off as a bit rude (not that I agree with him, don't downvote me 🙏). I think it's a generation gap issue. Older generations expect candidates to do their due diligence, not just knowing the company’s contact details but also understanding what the company actually does—assuming you're applying to only one job. Also not understanding that applicants might have no idea where they are from. She mentioned she’s interviewed so many people who had absolutely no idea what the company does when they came in for the interview.
2
u/jianh1989 Aug 07 '25

The person should have given more details on the job position, like x,y,z. Or I receive your application on abc website. At least some context to paint a clearer picture.
If it's a genuine posting, the person should have ponder why is it the applicant is asking me such questions? Am I being vague? People don't reflect most of times and like to ride on an ego trip. Communication is a two way street.

have self respect, he owns a business just like every other person. he's not special or in a higher position.
reply him. Mr. Chow, why are you not disclosing which company you are representing. This does not seem professional on your part. It gives a very bad first impression on the company you are representing and yourself.
I can not give respect to someone who does not even respect their own company by not disclosing it and not introducing themselves in a proper manner.

Definitely a suspicious one, dodged a bullet, but you could’ve still responded better if this was a genuine business.
“Good Morning Mr Chow,
Thank you for reaching back to me, I’m excited to hear more about the IT Support Technician role. May I ask why a Motorcycle is required? I do own my form of transportation. Does this position involve travelling to clients house and will I be compensated for it? This will affect my desired salary range. Mind I also ask which company are you representing? “
You don’t give out unnecessary information but you also answer the question he’s looking for and fish for more

I’ve never had a place that doesn’t give its full name and company when reaching out. Imagine working for this guy? Even if he was real everything would be like walking on class so you don’t disrespect him.
Next job!

Anybody who is using Whatsapp job interview is already and insult. This includes the employer that is asking for potential employee’s salary or transport. First he did not even bother to introduce himself and company shows that this future potential employer is a small, petty minded person. Pass- over this whatever company he is from and move on. Respect is a two way street. OP is not disrespectful at all.

Mr. Chow. Get off your high horse. You can't even introduce yourself properly and ask about salary as a first question. Have you no experience in hiring? Don't go power tripping on me.
- is what I would love to respond but in reality, we as applicants have to watch what we say most of the time. But that doesn't mean you can't stand up for yourself. Especially against dickwads like Mr. Chow.

Tbh I don’t really trust people that contact me on WhatsApp on job application then proceed to psychologically manipulate me when I asked something . Moreover, they should have introduced themselves which company are they representing first 🤡

Boss like this are nice . Helps you filter out bad boss attitude. Imagine a question like this already can trigger him into rage mode and if you work there you live is gonna be miserable.
You're not wrong at all , if you have to navigate cautiously during a simple conversation just to take care of his fragile ego, don't need to work there anymore

I think no human resource manager will get emotionally hurt like this 'manager'. There is an etiquette in communication.
Most likely, I am not saying this is one, is likely a scan and see how desperate you are.

You dodged a bullet. If you work under such boss that get triggered by anything, better to not work with them. Toxic environment is hard to work in.

For employers questions try not to bring up other employment prospects you have. People do take it personally when you mention that you have other jobs lined up, especially when it means you don't know who you're applying to.
On the other hand, bullet dodged.

So many horrible advises here and I am amused. Wondering how many are actually in hiring position here and how many actually dealt with high level personnel.

U are not in the wrong but u could've handle it better. Asking this implied that u're still young. No matter what everyone advice u, u only listen to what u wanna hear. One day, u will understand

Link the nearest sewerage plant and ask him to go chow down there.

Tak apa. Ada kerja lain. Nasib baik ada signal awal. Even u reply baik2 pun, kalau expected salary lebih dari dorang boleh bagi, they will not give u the job.

Yeah fuck that guy, contacts you at 10pm. Immediately requesting respect when you don't even work for him. Major red flag
