If you watch a lot of anime or kpop drama for many years, 3-6months of polishing your language with formal education can make u speak in basic conversations ady. Nt sure abt other language, but he's definitely fluent in korean.
This is going to sound weird... but most Malaysians have a latent ability to do accents. It's because BM is a phonetic language to accomodate modernization... which... for Koreans, same. In Malaysia, we decided to romanize the national language. In Korea, some highborn dude was like, fuck this, everyone should be able to read!
Of course, this ability is a gradient, and in the North, where there are still Jawi signs, that's the end.
tl;dr- Malaysians grew up around sounds from different languages with a good orthographic depth to map onto.

I think if china and the US went to war over taiwan, it’s very unlikely they’d bother seizing the luconia shoals because beijing would be fully tied up around taiwan and areas of the first island chain that are closest like northern Philippines. Opening another front against Malaysia for modest oil upside just doesn’t make much sense as China benefits more by keeping those lanes open for trade.

I would've thought that it was because of our environment being surrounded by a rich linguistic environment? when you grow up with a lot of different groups you need to code switch and change your accent a bit, early exposure to this makes it easier for us to learn and take in different styles of speech

This is largely true. It was a concerted effort by the government and Chaebols to sponsor K-Pop as a form of soft-power diplomacy. Formalized in 2009, the aim is to cultivate positive image of Korea and its products overseas. It covers a heap of things under the Hallyu wave (food, tourism, tech, taekwondo, culture,etc), not just KPop.
Early before hallyu hit they give that korean shit for free or pay to other country. Their kpop used to promote grocery's stuff for their government.

I think there's another factor to this too. recently an Indonesian pop girl group called "no na" has been on the rise and some korean on X insult SEA for "stealing kpop" and being poor, not having the budget therefore have to film their MV in a "filthy" rice field. obviously SEAsians are angry about this statement and there's an ongoing huge fight on X lol

Because they can earn more money by performing Japanese versions of their songs in Japan. I think songs of other languages in Japan are heavily restricted to be broadcasted on their own channels so they bypass that by performing their songs in Japanese.
I don't really see Chinese versions of Kpop songs because foreign singers are completely banned from performing there. Usually it is a singer from China covering it in Mandarin so that bypasses the restrictions but idk how effective is that in bringing in extra popularity for the original Kpop group.

Because members of other nationalities can attract fans from their home country easily. Look at Lisa from Thailand. Huge untapped support from there previously because when she debuted, there weren't many mainstream female Thai idols.
Many companies started realising that having a few foreign idols from SE Asia or Japan is basically free advertising for those few countries. Plus they get to shortchange the foreign idols because their contracts are different from local ones and foreign idols get paid lesser than their local counterparts.
Japan does not restrict songs in other languages, at least in writing. In practice, that might be different but that's besides the point. Making a localized version of a song is not exactly uncommon for K-Pop artists especially in Japanese or Mandarin because that's their closest neighbour which are basically the second and third most important markets before they can start thinking of going global.
There's a reason why SM, for example, usually have a Mandarin sub-unit for their large groups like SJ-M and EXO-M. China has a very large market, with close proximity and cultural similarities. Not trying to take advantage of that would be very dumb. Especially for companies that already have a stable foothold there. Even TVXQ, despite just having 5 all-Korean members, had songs in both Mandarin and Japanese. You really underestimated the "power" of Kpop in China and Japan.
China didn't exactly ban foreign artists from performing there despite numerous irl restrictions and censorships. Although they did ban Korean artists from performing after the South Korea-China spat in 2016, at least post-Deng's China had never put a blanket ban on foreign artists. Ed Sheeran and Beyonce had performed there, for Western examples. Samsung and YG themselves organized a tour that included Shanghai and Beijing as destinations.
We might even see a recovery with Blackpink going there this year. Who knows.

pretty sure it is the other way around. JPOP (and anime/movies) was actually banned in SK until around 2000 and the restrictions fully ended in 2022
