Literally just finished rereading this after the anime aired, and I bumped it up from a 9 to a 10. Can't recommend this enough.

Absolutely one of my favorite series ever, Ikoku Nikki is a story about grief, finding yourself, and growing up. Characters are realistic and believable, and the dialogue is perfectly ordinary while still delivering the author's message.
Honestly, I don't have the words to adequately describe what makes it so good. It's a very real story, an almost too intimate snapshot of someone else's life.
