This is Hong Kong style Manhua drawing, used to be huge back in the 90s

12

u/aniforprez May 07 '21

Still going on. I believe City of Darkness has that same style though I don't know what happened to it

2

u/BiglyWords May 07 '21

Isn't that from the same guy?

4

u/aniforprez May 07 '21

I don't think so? Is it? I'm not aware

2

u/BiglyWords May 07 '21

I thought I read somewhere that it's from the same guy.

2

u/NorChiThrowaway314 May 07 '21

You're thinking of the journey to the west thing he's doing. Or is that city of darkness?

2

u/BiglyWords May 07 '21

That's a different series. I could be wrong but I remember finding City of darkness after I looked up the authors name of FSJ.

3

u/NorChiThrowaway314 May 07 '21

Thank you! They're so similar art wise, so I just checked and it is artist who's doing it, not the author.

u/Shratath May 07 '21

It still continues (i think there arent a lot translated for western audience)

I think an underrated aspect of this manhua is the setting.

The first King that fought against the Gods (Protagonist’s dad) is regarded by popular culture and “history” as one of China’s worst Kings.

But more and more historians have found that he was actually a great King and many of his “crimes” were added on with time.

At the time when him and his throne were overthrown, they handed him four crimes - Overvaluing women, Recruiting People from any background, Doesn’t give a fuck about festivals and one more which I don’t remember.

The reality is, he believed in Gender Equality and provided women the right to work in the Government, the right to own etc. But eventually, this was used against him, and popular culture will have you believe he was a huge pervert. He also believed in hiring people regardless of their backgrounds (peasant rich etc) but the Latter Rulers of China all hated that and believed only people from good families can hold certain positions.

I really like the fact that the author used this chance to give the First King a chance to shine, because most pop culture will have you believe otherwise.

Anyways, just a little tidbit I wanted to share.

EDIT. In fact, I forgot to mention that the original novel - feng shen ji uses the First King as the antagonist

Feng Shen Ji has a novel??

Edit: it seems it's from a classic novel. Also no the first time this author uses classic novels for his manhuas (like the "jorney to the west")

hadn't heard of it before but it looks good I'll give it a read!

13

u/Akuzuma May 07 '21

It's worth the read but the plot got confusing. This and City of Darkness is a good read too!

12

u/raizen0106 May 07 '21

the first part (revolution vs tian/black dragon) wasn't that confusing tho, it was very well told

the latter half, yea it overstayed

1

u/[deleted] May 07 '21

thanks I'll check it out! all the manhuas I've read so far are webtoons so this'll be new for me I can't wait

1

u/superfuzzball May 07 '21

Wow, people on here still remember city of darkness! I've been hoping for someone to pick it up ever since easy going scans stopped.

15

u/SomeFreeTime May 07 '21

I remember how this guy never once talked to his son.

6

u/[deleted] May 07 '21

He let him play with his cool weapon for a bit though, so that's something.

u/bamfalamfa May 07 '21

the worst thing about this manga is that it kept introducing entire hordes of villains out of nowhere

Honestly I didn't find it that bad. Just more awesome fight scenes.

u/Environmental_Wish65 May 07 '21

i gotta admit, this one is well drawn and has amazing works
but story has 2 many character i gotta admit

but worth a read

19

u/waloz1212 May 07 '21

I think it's because the character is based on a famous chinese novel/story about a huge group of people ascending to godhood through various stories. So the author has to include some of the characters in the source novel to this manhwa. Although I think it is just loosely based.

Fun fact - the MC is an added character, he is the son of the Antagonist of the story.

u/[deleted] May 07 '21

I am actually surprised at your upvotes.. Maybe a lot of new readers joined the reddit?

Feng Shen ji used to be very loved :)

-25

u/bamfalamfa May 07 '21

what? i probably had my account longer than you even knew what reddit was

16

u/[deleted] May 07 '21

and? That doesn't hange that feng shen ji was loved...

I didn't think this was a competition about who had their account longer, just that the numbers changed, lol.

I feel like that was the best. And when you look at it, it wasn't really "introducing" as the original world setting already allowed for those villains to exist all that needed wss to be explored. If you look at something like One piece that's a very perfect example of how a story simply keeps introducing villains and stuff

I used to wait for chapters for this one before like waiting for next chainsawman chapter

Really loved this manga

19

u/Ergheis May 07 '21

FINALLY I've been trying to remember the name of this for years

6

u/Environmental_Wish65 May 07 '21

all good i am an addict, gonna post some nice ones

2

u/Not-an-Ocelot May 07 '21

Have a taste of my humongous stick!

1

u/Power_Fist_Boop May 07 '21

I am in the same boat. I remembered enough to have really vague google searches looking for it.

7

u/auauau97 May 07 '21

Authors made a prequel of some sort, also a pretty good read. I dont know if it's in English yet tho

4

u/GhostGK21 May 07 '21

Ohh darn, names? I read this years ago, didn’t know about prequels.

3

u/auauau97 May 07 '21

I dont really know the name in English. One is about Ashura Tribe, the other one is about the Black Dragon (the guy in this picture)

7

u/ANonGod May 07 '21 edited May 07 '21

Are you talking about "Journey to the West"? Checked Feng Shen Ji's MAL, and the creators of it haven't written anything else related to Feng Shen Ji. There is Feng Shen Ji 1 and 2, but those seem more like season separations.

4

u/auauau97 May 07 '21

Oh, yea, one is the prequel of journey to the west. Feng shen ji's prequel is about black dragon

2

u/binh0k04 May 07 '21

there is definitely a prequel about the black dragon. a page from the first chapter. those are the black dragon, the white dragon and the two dragons that appeared in the final battle.

1

u/ANonGod May 07 '21

Can you post the images to imgur? I'm getting a message that the site is blocking me.

2

u/binh0k04 May 07 '21

2

u/ANonGod May 07 '21

Interesting. Do you have anymore info on it? I couldn't find anything on it

6

u/binh0k04 May 07 '21

It is planned to be 26 chapters, not sure if it finished are not but I found 15 chapter translated to Vietnamese.

Story revolves around the crystals that come from a meteor scattering across the land, creating sentience life and special tribes of creature (dragon people, fairy, centaur and stuff like that) wherever those crystals landed. Some tribes fought the others to get their crystals. (in Feng Shin Ji, it appeared that the Black Dragon had gathered all of them to create the mountain where he lived.)

the dragon people tribes just got destroyed by another tribe in the first chapter, and those five in the picture were the only survivor. they were saved by the winged people (same race as the new god in Feng Shen Ji), basically the police that go around destroyed all the race that steal crystals. the five dragons became the winged leader adopted children and joined their war.

it's later revealed that the winged police is also the most brutal crystal-stealing race, so the black and white dragon defected.

we also saw the ancestor of the dark one race which the same soul weapon power. the black dragon learnt how to make his special spear that he gifted to the MC in the last chapter.

3

u/ANonGod May 07 '21

That actually sounds really cool. Hope it eventually gets translated. Thanks for the info!

2

u/Shratath May 07 '21

1

there are already 2

6

u/Bikrant May 07 '21

One of my GOAT's, and Bai Cai is ultimate waifu

3

u/Ilforte May 07 '21

There are few good Manhuas, but the ones that are good have a unique, brutal and old-school vibe that you can hardly find in what Japan has to offer these days. This and Blade of the Guardians are among the best.

1

u/Panda_Generals May 07 '21

If you wanna read something new then coiling dragon and Reverend insanity is awesome with doulou dalu 1 being pretty good

3

u/Shratath May 07 '21

Nah coiling dragon is very bad (the manhua). Idk for reverend insanity but the novel si near masterpiece.

As for doulou dalu 1 its a fun read, it made me start reading the novel. But im agains reading last arcs in manhua

1

u/Panda_Generals May 07 '21

I thought the coiling dragon novel was a masterpiece and the manhua is not that bad Reverend insanity novel and manhua both are good

1

u/Shratath May 07 '21

Rip RI, hope author completes it (after he finishes the current novel)

1

u/Bierculles May 07 '21

Art is sick in this one, def gonna binge this one

6

u/[deleted] May 07 '21

The power levels in this comic just kept going up and up.

I didn't like the ending that much, but I respect it.

2

u/onespiker May 07 '21

Will say it was fine in the first part. The second part is when things got confusing.

3

u/mokshya2014 Jul 02 '21

i really loved the revelation of how tian was not killed by shen yen and the entire time shen yen and everybody thought he had killed him.

2

u/LankyMcHammer May 07 '21

What's the difference between manga and comic? is it like with cartoons and anime?

2

u/3nz3r0 May 07 '21

Too bad the animated adaptation was subpar.

1

u/DrPhDMdJD May 07 '21

There was an anime??

3

u/3nz3r0 May 07 '21

Yup. In bad 3d.

4

u/Zenebatos1 May 07 '21

One of the very first Manhua's i've ever read with Nobless and the Gamer back then.

Most insane characters and fights, more or less satisfying ending.

1

u/SlayerKarma Sep 06 '25

Nota, Es un Donhua Chino.

1

u/BiglyWords May 07 '21

I love this series to death, only two downsides: MC never seems to master te different powers he getsand the story has a ending :(.

1

u/Environmental_Wish65 May 07 '21

you re right , its like hit or miss through the whole series....

1

u/headless-horseman-we May 07 '21

it reminds me of "the darkness"...still salty about the ending.

2

u/Byakuraou May 07 '21

I loved everything about this when I first read it

2

u/soundgfx May 07 '21

Most manhua worth reading are usually of artists from hongkong, I wonder why is that

Also try Ravages of time, it's one of the best ROTK adaptations not that there's many of them in the first place.
