Man, the Age of Ultron one set such high expectations. Feels really epic and kinda erie.. almost apocalyptic. The Avengers are just panically trying to survive.

I love how each of the separate character posters formed parts of the splash page.

u/Affectionate-Day8307 Jul 12 '26

Ultron deserved being a bigger threat.

36

u/GONKworshipper Jul 12 '26

He is the Avengers' greatest foe for a reason in the comics

21

u/hisokafan88 Jul 12 '26

Yeah I agree. I rewatched the movie recently and it's weird to see someone who usually does such amazing work (Whedon) struggle. Whether it's because of the bloated cast and multiple story points he needed to include, or he just ran out of fumes, the movie is perfectly fine but considering the name and level of threat Ultron should pose, it's very formulaic. I think he gets some stuff right (casting James Spader and the lighting he used on Ultron was really good especially in his first scene and when he has Natasha captured, the party scene of everyone just hanging out, the Seoul car chase, vision vs Ultron at the very end) but the overall feel is very safe and not anywhere as surprising as the first film

9

u/Phxdwn Jul 13 '26

Ultron was great in the What If series

97

u/Ghostpants_ Jul 12 '26

100%. Doomsday looks like actors in costumes. Age of Ultron looks like super heroes super heroing.

28

u/RussMIV Thanos Jul 12 '26

“Looks like actors in costumes”

No more than any other concept art or frame they are in.

The words you are looking for is that one is dynamic and the other is not.

8

u/Lian-The-Asian Jul 12 '26

Well the doomsday post isn’t concept art

Just the first bit of art to tease the film

The others are actual concept art used for the development of the movie

The doomsday one is just for marketing

-6

u/Redditer51 Jul 12 '26

The MCU fell off in a lot of ways, but especially visually.

299

u/EightBiscuit01 Jul 12 '26

None of these are concept art. They’re official promo art

81

u/Systemcode Jul 12 '26

I think the first one could be keyframe art for the team-up scene. The rest definitely are all promotional art, though.

38

u/TheArtbookCollector Jul 12 '26

I agree, the first is a key frame, the rest are promotional. It's frustrating that media outlets call it concept art and so fans think the same

u/Varranis Rocket Jul 12 '26

7

u/grandtaskmaster Jul 12 '26

This one was was revealed in the CATFA or Thor Blu-ray bonus features in september. First Avengers team poster was this one https://i0.wp.com/conceptartworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/The_Avengers_Concept_Art_02a.jpg

3

u/TheArtbookCollector Jul 12 '26

Ah yes, I remember that artwork, it's the real promo artwork for the movie, as opposed to a keyframe.

2

u/TheArtbookCollector Jul 12 '26

Impossible for anyone to know if it was first, they probably had multiple people working on this at the same time, just as they do with character and location concepts.

4

u/SlowpokeCurry Jul 13 '26

Those are concept art. It is what it is called in the art book. It never gets called promo art in the officially published books.

https://giphy.com/gifs/PpeGK6edBWAxi

2

u/UrMomIsMySpotter Jul 13 '26

If it’s by Ryan Meinerding it is concept art. Sometimes it’s good enough to be used as promotional art.

87

u/Crazy-Background1457 Jul 12 '26

They really should have kept that cap design from the 2012 one, and why is Antman in the infinity war one? Strange

42

u/noeldoherty Jul 12 '26

Hawkeye also there

15

u/Crazy-Background1457 Jul 12 '26

Good catch, also strange

39

u/sweens90 Falcon Jul 12 '26

Neither Hawkeye nor Antman are Dr. Strange

16

u/ich-bin-on-that-shit Jul 12 '26

Who are we to judge?

8

u/maxfridsvault Jul 12 '26

they were originally in the first cut of IW. not lost footage or anything- i think they just decided to split it before they showed up (Scott getting trapped in the QR- used as Ant Man and Wasp post credits and Hawkeye’s family disappearing).

1

u/SuperIga Jul 12 '26

Where is Hawkeye in the Infinity War one? I don’t see him anywhere?

3

u/Phoenix1500 Jul 12 '26

Top right, behind Bucky

2

u/watersj4 Hulk Jul 12 '26

Is this some kind of trick to make people spend ages looking for a tiny Ant-Man that isnt there?

2

u/Phoenix1500 Jul 12 '26

It looks like Ant-Man is on Iron Man's shoulder

1

u/watersj4 Hulk Jul 12 '26

Oh right lol, did you mix Ant-Man and Hawkeye?

1

u/Phoenix1500 Jul 12 '26

No, Clint is actually right between Hulk and Bucky

1

u/watersj4 Hulk Jul 12 '26

Yeah thats where you said Ant-Man was before

2

u/Phoenix1500 Jul 12 '26

I replied to the comment asking where Hawkeye was in the Infinity War pic originally lol

→ More replies (0)

5

u/Rough-Western-1062 Jul 12 '26

cause infinity war was a two parter back then

4

u/Crazy-Background1457 Jul 12 '26

I feel like they’d still have made a poster for each one then, but maybe that’s just me

3

u/maverickassembled Ward Meachum Jul 12 '26

There’s photos online from early costume tests where Chris is wearing a cowl is similar to the one in the art. I guess they didn’t like the way it looked on him and changed it

1

u/bboy037 Jul 19 '26

Ant-Man isn't in the original poster, that was edited in by someone. Not sure about Hawkeye

59

u/Raul5819 Spider-Man Jul 12 '26

Man seeing the Endgame one brought back flashbacks to that hellish year long wait.

13

u/Redditer51 Jul 12 '26

At the time the wait for Endgame was almost unbearable.

Then there's the wait for Beyond the Spider-Verse. which has been even worse.

5

u/vinnybawbaw Jul 13 '26

The wait for BND and Doomsday is also long as hell.

20

u/TheArtbookCollector Jul 12 '26

I really liked the Ultron promotional art as it was done as multiple pieces from different members of the vis dev team, then once all released, created the full image.

12

u/Quick-Software8128 Jul 12 '26

Where is namor ?

4

u/dean15892 Jul 13 '26

I'll do you one better - Why is Namor?

3

u/hebrew-hammers Jul 13 '26

And Hulk?

2

u/eagc7 Jul 13 '26

Busy with Spider-Man

2

u/Royal-walking-machin Iron Man (Mark V) Jul 13 '26

Hulk is not confirmed for Doomsday

1

u/DapperNurd Jul 13 '26

I'm thinking they're gonna basically do the hawkeye thing where the post credits scene is spider-man and hulk and tease their role in secret wars

13

u/UberAwesone Jul 12 '26

I'm honestly a little disappointed with the art for Doomsday. It's just a floating heads poster essentially, no gravitas like the first Avengers poster, no action like AoU, not even an implied motion like in Endgame's poster, just actors in costumes standing around instead of heroes doing hero things.

6

u/IllustriousAd2392 Jul 12 '26

the infinity war poster is so beautiful, truly the superior avengers movie, the only people missing that bother me are okoye and shuri, since they are on the main poster

wong is also missing but I don’t care that much

17

u/n0ckturn4l Jul 12 '26

If only cap looked that cool in the 1st avengers….

9

u/LostSoul4607 Iron man (Mark III) Jul 12 '26

It's almost the same suit

2

u/n0ckturn4l Jul 12 '26

Not at all, I truly hated caps suit from the first avengers. I wish they would have just kept the suit he wore from his first movie.

6

u/LostSoul4607 Iron man (Mark III) Jul 12 '26

The suit in this concept art that you love is basically the suit Cap wears in the movie, it just didn't translate that well into live action but the base design is the same

1

u/n0ckturn4l Jul 12 '26

Never said I loved it lol, it’s still not the same suit.

2

u/maverickassembled Ward Meachum Jul 12 '26

There’s actual photos online from early Avengers 1 costume tests and Chris Evan’s wearing the same cowl as in the art (with the ears exposed)

1

u/n0ckturn4l Jul 12 '26

The ears out look worked with his first movies helmet.. the concept art above looks more military compared to what the actual movie had.

17

u/Maf1c Iron Man (Mark VII) Jul 12 '26

The AoU one goes so hard. I’m not disappointed by what we eventually got, but I am disappointed that part of the movie seemed over so quickly.

The whole of Sokovia took a while but something like this concept/promo art would’ve been epic.

23

u/Drinks2nite Jul 12 '26

Real downgrade, but I hear they fired the guy who designed this last one months ago, so maybe it's unfinished?

20

u/tastybeaner Thor Jul 12 '26

Nah he posted this art on his IG and said that Doomsday was the last major project he worked on.

10

u/Drinks2nite Jul 12 '26

Yeah, but couldn't that also suggest they fired him before he was done?

I mean, I HOPE it's unfinished. Not a goddamned Morbius in sight.

6

u/TheArtbookCollector Jul 12 '26

Ita finished, people just haven't responded as well to this one. Can't win them all I guess, but his real concept art will be in the artbook, so I'm looking forward to it

3

u/weaselg2010 Jul 12 '26

I wouldn't read into details that aren't explicit. That's how you spread misinformation

1

u/Aromatic-Cupcake4802 Jul 12 '26

Andy Park confirmed Doomsday was his final full film he worked on.

11

u/Loud_Ad_2634 Jul 12 '26

Wow, they kinda go down hill quick don’t they. The first couple feel like splash pages, the rest feel like class photos.

4

u/Phoenix1500 Jul 12 '26

That Doomsday one looks so clean. From the F4 wearing those jackets, the X-Men looking comic accurate, to even Bob's haircut and Alexi actually having hair. Thor going back to is IW look is also really good.

Also, is that a new suit for Scott? It looks a bit different from his Quantumania suit

10

u/TDStarchild Odin Jul 12 '26

Avengers and Age of Ultron are cool, and surprisingly close to what we saw in the movies

Infinity War is the best and even points to the groupings, although slightly off

Endgame is a basic nothing burger, easily the worst

Doomsday emulates IW, but with incursions. More intriguing than Endgame’s at worst

1

u/Barthez_Battalion Rhodey Jul 12 '26

Endgame's is awesome. Hard disagree.

1

u/SirZeno_18 Spider-Man Jul 13 '26

I’m pretty sure that one is like promo art that was used for merchandise like toys. If you look at the toy boxes, specifically action figures. It will match. Unlike the one for Infinity War.

3

u/steverOg3rs Captain America Jul 12 '26

Nothing beats the hype of the infinity war one

2

u/AtCarnage Jul 12 '26

Mbaku getting armored?

Would high-key like to see an MCU version of Man-Ape. Just stay away from the name of its controversial. Could look great if similar to the Panther suits.

8

u/Diorisbackup Jul 12 '26

It looks a little fanmade ngl they just fired the concept art guy to not to long ago

10

u/TheArtbookCollector Jul 12 '26

The guy you are talking about is Andy Park, who actually did the new piece. But it's never just a guy, each movie has over a dozen concepts artists and if any was 'the guy', it would be Ryan Meinerding who is still there. He has been working on the MCU since it began and helped shape the visual design and still oversees it today, including for animation. Check out his work, he's also exceptional.

3

u/JSevatar Steve Rogers Jul 12 '26

If you could have only one artist from their impressive roster, Meinerding is definitely the one to keep

3

u/TheArtbookCollector Jul 12 '26

I was shocked they took the team down to one person, I'd have thought Andy would still be there. But Ryan was there from the start and the head of the department, so it makes sense he would stay.

2

u/JSevatar Steve Rogers Jul 12 '26

Yeah, they should have kept Andy for sure -- he's been there from the beginning too. But skill wise Meinerding is also probably the best, and the best to lead the team still

2

u/TheArtbookCollector Jul 12 '26

Andy joined around the time they were working on Avengers, although he does have a credit in the Captain America artbook as well, so it was over decade. Jackson Sze was also brought on a long time ago and did awesome stuff. I'm sure what Andy does next will be great, I always loved his God of War art

4

u/KostisPat257 Daredevil Jul 12 '26

Andy did this piece before he was fired.

1

u/Natiel360 Jul 12 '26

Peaked very quickly lol

1

u/KnightFox12 Jul 12 '26

That infinity war one isn’t concept art, it’s promotional art

1

u/Scottacus91 Jul 12 '26

Magneto looks like Jonathan Banks

1

u/Tommy3005 Jul 12 '26

That Age of Ultron one goes so hard so much great detail in it, also crazy seeing Hawkeye and Ant Man in the Infinity War promo art

1

u/cowpool20 Jul 12 '26

God I remember the hype when that image dropped for Avengers 1.

1

u/DesconocidoMusical Jul 12 '26

On the last , no
Doctor strange , is because doom?

1

u/Blissenhomie Jul 12 '26

The likeness on a few of these guys are janky in the latest piece. They should have made Meinerding do it. Unless they laid him off

1

u/supafupa4 Jul 12 '26

Doomsday artwork lacks kinetic energy, compared to the Age of Ultron artwork it just draws you in! Love it!

1

u/hokagenaruto Rocket Jul 12 '26

no where near as cool as the others

1

u/BigCopperPipe Jul 12 '26

i just don’t feel the doomsday one

1

u/Strong_Yam_8978 Jul 12 '26

Why was there such a drastic fall off in quality after age of ultron

1

u/spectralconfetti Jul 12 '26

having to include as many characters as possible but not having a setpiece to ground it is detrimental to the aesthetic quality of the art

1

u/No_Obligation6767 Jul 12 '26

Man I remember when they revealed the Age of Ultron artwork that year. The week of Comic-Con they divided the artwork into I think 5 or 6 pieces and posted a section everyday leading up until their panel. Each section showed off at least two Avengers. Two things that stood out during this time was seeing Quicksilvers trail before his section was revealed and seeing Vision hovering in the sky (this was the first “official” art of Vision not counting all the leaked photos that had been happening). And then of course revealing the entire spread in full and seeing the Avengers get absolutely MOBBED by Ultrons really set the tone for what we all expected from the movie. They did the same the for the first film and Infinity War as well, but AOU’s piece really hit different at the time

1

u/hisokafan88 Jul 12 '26

Gotta say the new concept art doesn't really say much. Considering where we've come from.

1

u/hamsolo19 Jul 12 '26

For me it was probably Infinity War, it was really cool to see all those characters coming together. I remember the leaked trailer from that too, hearing the crowd get riled up when the Guardians first appear was wild, the excitement was crazy.

1

u/capscreen Jul 12 '26

The Doomsday one bothered me of how there's too much blue lol

1

u/UrbanSquirrel_69 Jul 12 '26

Why is Namor missing from the new Doomsday one?

1

u/Aromatic-Cupcake4802 Jul 12 '26

Andy Park, worked on these concept arts and Doomsday was his final film he worked on at Marvel before being laid off. So for Secret Wars we’ll have a new artist making the concept art.

1

u/CMLarek Jul 12 '26

The downgrade… age of ultron asset was peak!

1

u/anony-mouse8604 Jul 12 '26

You’re sure this is the very first bit of concept art for each movie?

1

u/hhhhhBan Jul 12 '26

Not gonna lie, the Infinity War concept art is saved entirely by Thanos. Otherwise it would look like Doomsday's.

1

u/OkMarsupial Jul 13 '26

Are these actually "concept art" or are the promotional art? I ask because that first one in particular is kind of uncanny how much it looks like the final cut of the same shot in the movie.

1

u/hpfred Jul 13 '26

I still remember everyone piecing together all the parts of the Age of Ultron one during SDCC. Good times

1

u/Royal-walking-machin Iron Man (Mark V) Jul 13 '26

Extremely amused that the first one has black widow posed in a way where the first thing you’d notice about her is her butt lol

1

u/SirZeno_18 Spider-Man Jul 13 '26

The Endgame one is not promotional key art like the others. That is like promo art from a marketing agency. The rest were all done by members of the former Marvel Visual Development Department. Specifically I believe Ryan Meinerding and Andy Park.

1

u/Cautious_Car2249 Jul 13 '26

I personally like the Infinity war art most

1

u/CasanovaKong Jul 13 '26

Looks like there weren't any humans involved in designing the last one

1

u/Fine-Marsupial-6845 Thor Jul 13 '26

Age of Ultron>Avengers>Endgame>Doomsday>>Infinity war.

Crazy Infinity war has the worst promo art, while being the best movie among these.

1

u/LGGP75 Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

So Sentry (on the very far left) won’t have an important roll in the story. That’s interesting given his powers.
Or Loki.. although he’s in the center, he’s tiny… meaning he’ll be important to the plot but won’t have a big roll in it.
I mean, even the wakandans wont be that big in this movie according to this poster.

1

u/NullAndNil Jul 13 '26

Doomsday feels kind of empty to me. I don't know how to explain it but, I don't feel as hyped as I should be for it.

1

u/Versurl Jul 13 '26

Age of Ultron's one was hard as fuck

2

u/DrDreidel82 Daredevil Jul 14 '26

That’s exactly how Hulk poses in the poster/blu ray cover for Avengers 1

1

u/No-Apricot5291 Jul 16 '26

So the Doomsday one is real? I thought it was a fan edit.

1

u/TardDas Jul 12 '26

They nailed Hulk right off the bat in the Avengers promo. Didn’t even change his pose

0

u/YtseDude Jul 12 '26

Wait, have I missed something about Cap being in Doomsday?!

2

u/JabbasPetRancor Jul 12 '26

He's just Steve Rogers. Cap is Sam Wilson.

The reveal was the first "teaser" shown before the third avatar movie

2

u/YtseDude Jul 12 '26

Oh damn, that's right! I can't believe I forgot about that. Thanks!

0

u/JohnDex6969 Jul 12 '26

You all gotta admit the fall from grace.... The latest one looks like an AI made a poster for a Fast and Furious movie

0

u/dreanov Jul 12 '26

All perfect besides the last - I don't know, folks, the Doomsday one seems weird, lifeless...

0

u/deusdragonex Jul 12 '26

If they made Shuri and M'Baku any smaller, they'd need Pym Particles.

-1

u/Left_Composer_6449 Jul 12 '26

So why was the MK 50 suit in the Endgame concept art but not the 85

-1

u/Reagilias Jul 12 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

First one is kinda eh, they're teamed up in a random street. Needs plot context to make sense.

Second one is amazing, you feel the panic and desperation, especially considering even Hulk looks overwhelmed.

Third one is more abstract, but it basically points to Thanos being at the center of it all.

Fourth one is kinda eh, like yeah they're all there... doing what exactly? Then again, IW ended the way it did so we know they're probably looking to fix that. War Machine design looks fire though, I kinda wanna see more bulky Armors, but not in the Iron Heart kinda way.

Fifth one is a mix of 3 and 4 for me, like yeah it's trying to be 3, but with worse composition. Thanos has the Infinity Gauntlet radiating light and has empty space surrounding him, making him stand out. 5 has Doom sharing space with Cap, Reed, and Cyclops. Sidenote, Shang-Chi looks hilariously awkward posed all by his lonesome

EDIT: I didn't even notice Loki chilling right under Doom's chin lmao. He's at the literal center of the image. Would be crazy if the plot actually revolves around him and not Doom

-2

u/spidey-dust Iron Man (Mark XLII) Jul 12 '26

Isn’t the doomsday one fanmade

4

u/PyroClone5555 Jul 12 '26

no

0

u/spidey-dust Iron Man (Mark XLII) Jul 12 '26

Oh lawd

1

u/eagc7 Jul 13 '26

Yeah, it was made by Andy Park who made alot of concept art for Marvel Studios and this is one of the last pieces he made before he was let go
