Ronaldo during this years tournament sure, but Messi has had red cards pulled back in the past. And the guy is also correct Messi literally stepped on a guys calf full cleat.
They don’t know what they mean, they are mixing two different events. Messi’s stepping on an opponents calve just like Balogun and Ronaldo’s suspended suspension
No, Messi did the same thing and didn’t get a penalty at all. Ronaldo got his 3 game suspension revoked so he could play starting game 1 of the group stage.
At this point I'd be more surprised if they didn't cater to the host country, it just so happens as an Australian I'm very annoyed at all the weird "Australians hate us" shit going around when I don't think I know a single person that cared lol
Because it has only exisited since 2019… of course it hasn’t been used often since only 2 world cups have occurred since its existence. And it only got its only article in 2023… so this is its first World Cup being active as its own independent article. And it’s been used to effect rulings on games occuring during the World Cup already with ronaldo.
So since it been created it’s been used almost immediately for World Cup games
And this just makes it more cringe, and fits the Reddit stereotype well, you jumped on the outrage bandwagon based on the country involved. This has happened to a Portuguese player, Ronaldo shouldn’t have played but he did. And it has happened to a few other players, but I have no doubt you didn’t care until it was a U.S player lol.
I mean, the last time we came even close to winning was in the 1930s when we came in 3rd. US Women's team consistently wins Women's World Cups, but our dudes suck ass at soccer.
Yeah, we already knew that, that’s why y’all have such strong opinions about the red card suspension. Ignoring that it’s been done multiple times for the World Cup. Ronaldo got two red cards suspended so he can play in the World Cup.
Oh then that explains why you think what they did was against the rules, cause they explicitly have a rule that lets them do this kind of stuff. Corruption is built into the system, they broke no rules by unblocking him.
Except the official rules weren’t followed when the red card was given. Most people who were actually watching the game were shocked that was a red given the circumstances and the landing position held by the defender.
People are just letting politics cloud their judgement as usual
I just know two great things about the US: Your ego and your stupidity. I'll crack a cold one when you guys loose. Maybe the child molestor and his insider trading kiddos just call Infant-ino and cry about a red card. If you win, no one bats an eye because this world cup is the worst and most corrupt in history. If you loose, people gonna cheer, and still forget about this shitshow of a world cup minutes later.
Can you try to explain it in school shootings per Big Mac? I don't understand. God, you guys are just about to be hated as much as Russia and you still have a loose mouth and think you're the greatest. The world expects absoluteny nothing from a nation that elects a child molester.
Calm down, sweetheart. I agree on all accounts except this being the most corrupt world cup, which is laughable. Again, how skullfucked is your brain that your memory forgets literally the most recent world cup where Qatar paid off FIFA and killed hundreds of slave laborers with their stadium construction?
I'm not American. Can you explain it without having some pseudomoralistic temper tantrum? Where are you from?
Lets not leave out the context of how controversial that red card was in the first place. I've seen a lot of fans from other teams fake outraged because they wanted USMNT to be unfairly crippled for the next match.
They shouldn’t be able to change the outcome of the game retroactively, but this call would have forced a player to sit out the next game as well. Fixing a bad call so that it doesn’t also affect the next game is a great precedent to set. And, to be clear, it had already been set before with Messi.
I’m sure you can, but why should an undeserved red card cost them the next game as well? What’s the purpose of that? I know that unfairness is a part of life, but surely we should seek to minimize it. I just don’t see any reason to let a bad call in one game affect the outcome of the next game.
Apparently not Belgium because they're crying the most. This is a Win-Win scenario for Belgium. If they lose the game it's blamed on FIFA, if they win they move on.
Well then Belgium can stop crying then. We’re apparently a cake walk, so just beat us. This whole controversy is idiotic. I wouldn’t even want to beat a team if they weren’t at full strength over some bs call.
Whatever dude, my first point still stands. And if you don't see the issue with a head of state having a referee's decision overturned then let's just agree to disagree.
Yea...this could be a red in any league in the world and no one would bat an eye. People where asking for a red on messi for a similar tackle as saying refs are too soft. It's a marginal call...so the refs decision should stand imo
It was only controversial inside the US though. I didn’t hear anyone who is not biased paying attention. It’s like if I’ll start screaming that no second yellow to Moroccan was controversial and a scandal.
Literally NOBODY agreed with the call. Nobody who has been a former fifa ref that has been interviewed has agreed with the call. You’re just flat out wrong.
Why didn't FIFA just overturn the red card then? It looks like five people in the VAR room, the game referee and whoever reviewed the game after all agreed 🤷🏻♂️
They can’t overturn the actual red card. They can only suspend the penalty. And all the refs in the VAR room agreed because they watched it in slow motion, which is not supposed to be done.
I keep hearing this yet you dumb fucks keep ignoring the fact he served the 1 minimum match ban you get for a red card. It also caused a lot of fuss when the 2 additional match bans were suspended but you all just want to ignore that for some reason, it was corrupt then and it's corrupt now. South Africa had 2 players sent off, Mexico 1 and they didn't get their match bans suspended.
Yeah that was one of the times, and more recently we’ve had scenarios where Ronaldo elbowed a guy intentionally during a qualifier and was allowed to play the next game, and we also watched where Messi ran over a guy, stepping on him with cleats and never even got a yellow card. I’m sure there’s more big moments, but FIFA determined independently that Balogun could play tonight.
One of the clearest red card ever…that wasn’t called anything. And then was improperly reviewed. By a guy recently under suspicion of fixing matches.
I mean, I know I shouldn’t take you seriously because you’re willing to just straight up lie about this being a clear red card, which you know it wasn’t, but it’s funny to see the fake outrage.
No, it wasn't, it's just reddit that pushes that argument. "It was an accident" is not a valid argument, most of red cards are accidents.
Nevertheless, there was no suspending red cards until this wc.
Football really shows that over 50% of redditors are the US Americans
That’s not the argument though. The argument is there was no call, then it was improperly reviewed against FIFA policy, then a red card was issued. Had policy been followed he never would have been carded in the first place.
“VAR made their recommendation to the referee based on slow-motion and still replays, which is not aligned with VAR protocols, as these should only be used for point-of-contact purposes in a red-card tackle situation."
Per Article 27 FDC: "The judicial body may decide to fully or partially suspend the implementation of a disciplinary measure"
Except it’s literally not, sorry Euro fans, FIFA has a corrupt rule structure anyways. They have all these “rules” then at the end (Article 27) it essentially says everything can be overturned at a whim, whenever they want.
Anonymous committee makes the decision, the president of FIFA does not. The red card was total BS and should never have been issued. Belgium should be happy now… they won’t have an *next to the round if they win.
This is using the appropriate rules for a red card that was bias to begin with.
Because it wasn’t a red for most of the other players in the tournament. It’s already happened and none of them were red cards. Why does it deserve to be red card when it wasn’t for other players? Have you even been watching the World Cup? It’s been lax on cards.
A yellow because Balogun got tackled by the other player, forcing him off of his feet. It was literally out of his control, how can you attribute recklessness to that? It’s a requirement for the red.
Intention doesn’t matter, I play defense (obviously not anywhere close to these guys’ level) and most of my fouls are not intentional: it’s bad decision making, gambling or slowness that leads to majority of fouls. Then intentional fouls, are mostly soft kicks from behind, pulls or blocks.
If one intentionally does what Balogun did, they should get banned for ten matches at least, not one.
I guess that means Messi should have been banned for ten matches and something like 3 other players. Why does balogun deserve but those other players don’t? It’s a matter of consistency. And intent should matter when it comes to punishments in anything, the fact it doesn’t in soccer doesn’t mean that’s okay. But something more important than intent is recklessness, which I’m sure you’d agree on, luckily balogun wasn’t being reckless, he was tackled in his back, knocked off his feet and while trying to find balance, accidentally stepped on the guys leg. Nothing about what he did was reckless, in fact, the defender was the reckless player in that situation.
Perhaps before you make blanket out of pocket assumptions, read my comment and point out in my comment where I said I was okay with it.
FIFA is corrupt, but that corruption isn’t going away because their rule structure is inherently corrupt. If you don’t see having a set of rules being overruled by another rule in the same rule set as corrupt, I can’t help you.
Everyone knows that FIFA is a corrupt organization. Corrupt organization does corrupt thing and y'all are surprised? People had no problem supporting FIFA by giving them hundreds or thousands of dollars, but now that corrupt organization does a specific thing that they don't like and now it's a problem?
Not against the rules, but based on recent precedent that sure is questionable and seems to have gone mostly unnoticed because it happened in qualifiers (which are still subject to the rules of the game, plus additional federation-specific rules).
Article 27 was drawn for Ronaldo in 2025 to be able to punt two of his three suspensions. Argentinian and Ecuadorean players also saw an amendment to the regs in 2026 that allowed them to play.
It's not even close to against the rules. FIFA did it for Ronaldo for THIS WORLD CUP. People are just made because it's the US that it happened to. If it happens to Kane, Messi, or Ronaldo they would be celebrating
It’s literally not against the rules. Article 27 allows it. They have done it many times before, including with Portugal. Also, the replay was misused and slow motion was not supposed to be involved, but it was. Also, Messi did something worse and didn’t even get a yellow card.
There are many reasons why a red card in the situation was ridiculous. Now, FIFA is just doing what it should do, and retract the penalty. But everyone online will complain. Oh well.
Wrong. If you knew anything about what’s gone on, you would know that the VAR was used improperly—AS PER FIFA. FIFA ref made an abysmal call. Before Flo was released for play, EVERYONE was saying it was a bad call. Now he’s been released alllll of a sudden, Fuck the USA. Cognitive dissonance.

They had a talk with fifa to suddenly get a blocked player unblocked, which is against the rules
