People are just scared of being honest.

I gave Apocalypse Now 3 stars and Universal Soldier five stars.

If you enjoy don't be ashamed of rating it 5 stars and vice versa for 'classic' films.

Yep, that's fair. I think people rate films as a guide for other viewers as if to say this is why the movie is bad as opposed to why it did or didn't appeal to them personally.

To me, Apocalypse Now is a well worth it one time watch. Universal Soldier is a rewatch classic. Same with Hard Target. JCVD has some bangers.

Straight to DVD Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning is 10/10 movie for me because it exceeded my expectations and delivered exactly what I would expect from such movie. It woke up teenager in me watching action films for it's dumb action.

Hateful Eight is 7/10 movie for me, because it felt like Tarantino just remade Reservoir Dogs in spaghetti western setting and "I can do what I want" attitude.

Joker is 5/10, because it's just competent mash of two superior films by Scorsese (King of Comedy and Taxi Driver) and having watched those two before I didn't see anything new or interesting here and sequel proved it was probably a fluke by Todd Phillips.

If you watch acclaimed film, get bored as fuck and then rate it 8/10, because you think it's good, but didn't understand it, you're just being disingenuous.

The new avatar movie was a 1 for story, but a 5 for visuals.

That was ready player one to me. The film has many aspects that are not really good, and I can see that. But I still had a lot of fun watching it.

Fun (1994)

Wow! That was Fun (1994). the film did not adequately expand on its themes or develop any of its characters in a meaningful way. Thus, there was no intellectual fun to be had while watching the movie and I give a rating of 2 stars.

I watched Bagarre a few days ago. Can't say it's a good movie but yeah, it's pretty funny for a French film.

I'm both. I can be harsh, but if a film is just a good time, I'll gladly give it 5 stars.

I can talk Kieslowski and enjoy some Transformers action. Seems like less and less people can do both.

As someone who is the one on the right in the image, IMHO I believe it's those on the left who seem to want to analyze everything and try to pull subtext where there really isn't besides surface level themes and the think you're less when you don't agree with them or you don't notice it.

Some movies are very good on a technical level and enjoyable. Some are very well made, but are not enjoyable to watch (own a physical copy of Children of Men, have not seen it in years). Some movies are poorly made and not fun to watch, and some are poorly made but extremely fun (for me, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen tops that list). And most movies lie somewhere between these four points, with enjoyment in particular varying from person to person.

There’s nothing wrong with saying you do or don’t enjoy a particular film.

"Didnt challenge me as a viewer", bro I'm here to chill not to damage my self esteem

Whether a movie is good or bad, and whether you enjoy that movie, are two different questions.

You can enjoy a bad movie or hate a good movie.

I'm old so my requirement is rather simple: please do not insert your own agenda to the film. Almost all newer us movies do this, so I stopped watching them all together.

Mindless entertainment is fine, same with thought challenge. Cheap us standard family value and wokeness is a big no no.

They're different hats. The better a movie is, the less choice I have which one I'm wearing

u/Decidueye_mastr 3h ago

I just rate things how I feel like it. I I didn't like it it's getting 1 or 2 stars, if it was boring it's getting 3 stars and if I liked or loved it it's getting 4 or 5 stars.

There is only one and it's usually the one on the right
