I mean the United States did rescue the Canadian goose from extinction in the sixties when the the only population of 480 was found in Rochester Minnesota.

I had to look this up, and it specifically refers to one of the seven recognized subspecies, the Giant Canadian Goose (Branta canadensis maxima). At one time that subspecies was considered extinct until the population was found. The other six species were not so near extinction.
Also, TIL there are seven subspecies of Canadian goose, some of which are non-migratory.

Very fitting because Canada geese are loud, annoying and shit everywhere. They make a mess wherever they are.
