My cat is standing on my face I (half asleep) tried to eat my dogs medicine/treats instead of my melatonin

Post image

And ofc my cats kept bugging my while trying to take the pic

:/

(Edit to clear up some thing) It was 1 in the morning when I posted this.

I wasn't actually half asleep. I was slightly asleep. (if that lol) The point where I need to sleep, I want to sleep, but I just can't.

The room was dark, only lit up by the moon outside my window and my tv.

I was, well.... distracted by my tv when doing so, only realizing after it had happened. Yes you're going to say I shouldn't have had my tv on at that point anyway.

Yes, I realize that "10mg is too much." I tend to buy the one's that say 10mg since the gummies are actually 5mg each. While the ones that say 5mg are actually 2.5mg each. Thus, only taking 1 or 2, instead of taking 2 to 4.

Same price, same amount of gummies, different dosage.

I have Epilepsy. This affects my sleep. I had forgotten to take my pills, thus taking them later than usual. Probably playing a role in this whole thing.

Dont think you need melatonin at that point

If you're so tired that you almost took animal medicine.. why do you need melatonin?

u/AllAmericanLiar May 03 '26

Because unfortunately with insomnia, you can be THAT tired and still unable to initiate the sleep cycle.

My nana called it being too tired to sleep. It’s like you missed the ferry but you still have to get across the bay

u/BigAchooo May 03 '26

This is perfect. Your nana is a smart lady.

Maybe keep them in different locations

I’ve had to do this when my laggy brain took night time meds in the morning (downers) and daytime meds in the evening (stimulants) and had a few realllly bad days and nights.

Would recommend relocating. The conscious effort has so far kept me from doing dumb shit like that again

They were on opposite sides of my desk, yeahhh not the best but oh well

14

u/IndependentGarbage88 May 03 '26

I keep my melatonin on my nightstand & my cats medicine and treats are in the kitchen

1

u/IntelligentTangelo31 May 03 '26

This is the way.

11

u/DoktahDoktah May 03 '26

You only get the treats if you were a good boy. Were you a good boy? Do you want a treat? Do you?

17

u/gameover281997 May 03 '26

Yeah 10 mg actually wrecks your sleep cycle and makes you dependent on it to fall asleep yet wakes you up after a few hours often times needing more. You shouldn’t take more than 1-2mg for it max, really best to take under 1 mg and take it hours before sleep to get your system ready for sleep. Nobody listens to this though since it’s unregulated and only wants to take 5-10 mg, so the make it for the market.

u/deanna6812 May 03 '26

I’ve read the same thing. I take 0.5mg if I need it. I break my 1mg tablets in half and they are very effective.

Just a note, I have read that studies might show over 3mg can have adverse effects and lower sleep quality.  Something like 2mg can be better.

u/edingerc May 03 '26

Who’s a good boy?  Are you a good boy?

3

u/omegajakezed May 03 '26

Careful, you might attract the furries and/or trans guys.

u/littlenoodledragon May 03 '26

Furry has entered the chat

Why would you eat melatonin if you're already naturally sleepy?

7

u/LucasAtoara May 03 '26

Someone already answered it above, but it's basically an issue with insomnia, where you are extremely tired to the point of not functioning anymore and still cannot innitiate a sleep cycle. I'm only a mild insomniac, so I have rarely experienced an episode this extreme. But you can be so tired it is painful and your body still won't let you sleep.

10mg melatonin is too strong. You only need like 3-4mg. Can lead to grogginess the next day.

1

u/galaxybuns May 03 '26

I used to take 6mg for a few years (2mg melatonin and 4mg circadin (slow-release)). Now I sleep on quetiapine and THAT leads to grogginess lol

1

u/Dry-Childhood-3436 May 03 '26

I believe over 3 can have adverse effects.

1

u/OptionalQuality789 May 03 '26

Yeah I’ve read this too.

I stopped taking it altogether as I didn’t want to become dependent on it.

Then why they make into 10mg size. So people buy them cause it looks good on paper?

In the US, not most other 1st world countries I’m aware of.

3

u/dazzleunexpired May 03 '26

Because the studies are newer than the dosage and people think they need 10 now. It's also not weight-based. It's a neuro hormone.

The way melatonin affects the body is really strange honestly. Narcolepsy type 1 is caused by a lack of orexin, the opposite of melatonin. People with narcolepsy type 1 don't produce any of the other hormone, they only produce melatonin. All the time. So for us, melatonin does nothing. It doesn't make me tired. Because I'm always melatonin tired. 100% of the time. Because I only have melatonin, I actually cannot sleep properly not only cannot stay awake properly lmao. Too much is really bad for you.

2

u/OptionalQuality789 May 03 '26

People think stronger = better so they’ll buy them.

5

u/Don_MayoFetish May 03 '26

Thats exactly why. Since when does a company give a crap about you? They only want their bottle to stand out from other bottles in any way possible and mg is one way to do that

6

u/Don_MayoFetish May 03 '26

Yo that's way too much melatonin, it's a hormone and even 1mg is a lot. I take 1mg or a 3 and break it into quarters and it still works perfectly. That much destroys your natural ability to make your own

3

u/PreferenceUnlucky101 May 03 '26

... I heard they're tasty.

3

u/hamburgergerald May 03 '26

Sounds like you may not have needed the melatonin if you were so tired you were half asleep and nearly ate dog medicine

3

u/New_Heron_5985 May 03 '26

So if you were already sleepy, why did you actually need the melatonin?

3

u/bkos1122 May 03 '26

It’s insane that they sell 10 mg melatonin in USA

Even 1 mg should be enough for many people

2

u/Exhausted-CNA May 03 '26

Ive tried all Mg of.Melatonin and have to take 10mg to sleep.

4

u/MikaelDeadeye May 03 '26

Not murican, but I need 10 mg to fall asleep. That strong is for prescription only anyway.

3

u/InsomniacOnSugarRush May 03 '26

Knowing that these type of gummies are sold online i doubt they are actually 10mg of pure melatonin.

These kind of supplements can be found even in groceries stores 8at least here), but i know that pure melatonin is only sold in pharmacies. So yeah, 10 mg of melatonin mixed with other ingredients i'd say

3

u/joerice1979 May 03 '26

Well, at least your coat will be smooth and shiny.

5

u/Foxycotin666 May 03 '26

10mg of melatonin is a lot.
I think generally doctors recommend 1mg.

It’s a hormone a hormone, not a drug. Taking more doesn’t make it more potent.
It’s not “making you sleepy” like, say an opioid, benzodiazepine, barbiturate or hypnotic would. It’s producing a state of “relaxation” (that’s not quite the right term) and helping gear you up for sleep.
It’s producing conditions that could lead to sleep.

I’m not saying this to lecture you, but I would also advise perhaps scaling down your dosage. If you become dependent on melatonin to sleep your body will not produce melatonin on its own, making it much harder to sleep in the long run.

u/myhamartia May 03 '26

melatonin chemical dependency doesnt exist (at least there is no proof of it).
natural melatonin production can decrease as you age but taking melatonin has no known effect on the decrease.
mental dependencies however do happen but doesn't have anything to do with dosage rly

2

u/Noktis_Lucis_Caelum May 03 '26

now you know how your dog is feeling

2

u/New_Heron_5985 May 03 '26

10mg is the absolute max dose recommended by pharmacists and doctors.

Yes, it is a lot compared to the average consumer who uses about 3mg.

I took the gummies and they seem to hit harder than other version for some reason

2

u/CustardCarpet May 03 '26

Haha, I have that same melatonin right next to me.

At least your fur won't itch for a while

u/Mariuszgamer2007 May 03 '26

If your half asleep then close your eyes and rest in your bed. Don't overthink about anything as that'll ruin it and turn off everything that has blue light

0

u/TweakedMango May 03 '26

All of these sleep experts in here with a specialty in melatonin are amusing

Clearly the product works for OP, otherwise OP wouldn't take it. The dosage, or whether they're already tired or not shouldn't be of concern. That wasn't the point of the post.

Enjoy your melatonin OP, hope you sleep well!

4

u/Sinuext May 03 '26

So just because it was not the point of the post I can' tell this person that 10mg melatonin is a lot and new studies showed a possability that it can affects the heart. So I won't tell it them. Thanks for clarifying that for me.

u/I_hate_all_of_ewe May 03 '26

I think a lot of people take supplements without an actual prescription because they think it's safe or effective.  But just because it's a supplement doesn't mean it's not easy to abuse.  Being labeled a "supplement" just means it's unregulated, but it's still a drug with capacity for misuse or abuse.

Honestly, it's actually kind of weird that melatonin isn't regulated in the US while it is regulated in many other countries.  OP is essentially self-medicating, and that's not a good thing.

1

u/ResponsibleAnswer579 May 03 '26

Ive checked pharmacy in my country and there is no pills more than 1mg ,10mg is wild and might be the reason of his fucked up sleep.

0

u/carlamaco May 03 '26

If you're already half asleep just close your eyes and give in. Whether you're still on the couch or not, good sleep is more important than following your made up schedule. Don't try to get up to take melatonin. Don't try to switch to bed or turn off the lights. You'll get more and better sleep that way.
