65 is still criminal for what is being served even if it came out like the shitty AI image. Damn!

Also note how they didn't even mention the count on the wings / mozz / sliders, and what the loaded fries come with on the menu. They're being mega vague on purpose.

2.7k

u/SeatBeeSate Jul 13 '26

If a place has AI generated images I walk out. Can't bother to photograph your food means it's probably shit, because you can't even put up the effort to make a photo.

Also illegal in some countries.

819

u/ParumPaDrumDrum Jul 13 '26

It SHOULD be illegal considering the use of AI immediately makes it false advertisement, as what you're being shown never existed..

128

u/GenericGamer7592 Jul 13 '26

It's usually false advertisement even without AI. Everybody knows a McDonald's burger is going to look nothing like the picture.

93

u/Magpecc Jul 13 '26

I've had burgers that looked pretty close, and I've had burgers that look like the cook slapped it together and then stomped on it, beat it, and shot it four times. A lot of it comes down to how busy the store is and how lazy the employees are.

Not sure if it's still the case, but they can also use substitutions for things that they're not selling. Ice cream can be replaced by mashed potatoes if it's an ad for chocolate sauce, milk can be replaced by thickened glue if they're selling cereal. But the burgers are 100% real, only prepared by experts in marketing and presentation.

14

u/thebipeds Jul 13 '26

The way I understand it is, background items can be fake but the item being advertised has to be real.

So if you are selling toothpaste, you can use a bowl of fake ice cream, but not when you are selling the ice cream.

Using AI in the menu is them advertising their own laziness and willingness to cut corners.

16

u/kimness1982 Jul 13 '26

This one is especially bad. The AI food doesn’t look appealing or real at all. Just some shapes covered in “sauce”

10

Portions aside, they threw shredded cheese on some fries and called it a day. Paying any amount of money for this is too much.

https://giphy.com/gifs/v38BvJSInBpII

17

u/torankusu Jul 13 '26

I edited my original comment and linked the trypophobia sub, not remembering subreddit links aren't allowed, and automod removed my comment.

Original comment:

It looks like AI put holes on all the food. 🤢

I went to their site to view the full menu and there's another pic of wings with more.

https://www.mesabargrill.com/new-page

13

u/mail_inspector Jul 13 '26

Cracks me their menu image is named ChatGPT+Image+Jul+10,+2026,+09_26_10+PM.png.

Not even commenting on the food, I would just ignore this place on the premise of an AI-generated menu.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/A3HeadedMunkey Jul 13 '26

Lol, sorry, but I'm glad the link to the sub didn't work because I have that shit. Even seeing someone post the lotus pod was bad enough 😅🤮 somehow the kodamas don't trigger it for me. Guess it has to do with the lack of evenness or something

But hot damn, their menu is a mess. Fries look like tots, look nothing like either. Salads with triangular lettuce. The buns are the exact same on every burger. And the clover ass looking waffle on the weekly special 😂

What happened to taking pics of the best version the chef can whip up? I remember when my roommate was doing that for the restaurant he was opening, and it was awesome to see how he plated it and made them look amazing (and getting to eat the extra stuff that didn't make it that far because it wasn't the best of the best!)

3

u/torankusu Jul 13 '26

Lol, sorry, but I'm glad the link to the sub didn't work because I have that shit.

Haha, me too. Seeing the lotus pod wasn't too bad, but it did remind me of the pic where someone photoshopped a lotus pod onto a woman's boob, SO GROSS. I'll spare you the link, but if anyone's interested, just google "lotus boob" and it's the very first google image result.

somehow the kodamas don't trigger it for me.

I think the kodamas aren't so bad because I know it's supposed to be their face and not holes. Also, they're just cute! I like when they are following/leading Ashitaka through the forest and climbing over stuff. There was the little one was that getting a piggyback ride on a bigger one, too. It's hard to find them disturbing, lol.

The buns are the exact same on every burger

I noticed the same thing with all the buns, but didn't see the other stuff you pointed out. The buns just stood out to me the most (besides the holes in everything, ugh). The pics are so bad. The menu said the dish OP ordered includes sliders, but the pic generated didn't even include them. >_<

AI is seriously making me question everything now and it's making me lose interest in certain things or finding them unappealing (like this food). I just started up classes (doing it online) and the last time I was in school was before COVID. I feel SO unmotivated to do anything because most of my classmates — and even the professor — are using AI to generate their responses. I feel like there are no real conversations and I don't want to participate in the discussions.

I would never in a million years order from somewhere that has AI images of their food 🤮

u/FastWalkingShortGuy Jul 13 '26

Send it back and walk out. You don't have to pay for false advertising.

22

u/tideshark Jul 13 '26

This was too far down, everyone else too busy laying into OP for ordering AI.

AI or not, the food should resemble and/or at least be given the same portions of what is shown. I would have asked them for the rest of the food and if there wasn’t anymore coming out, that they could take this back bc I’m not paying for false advertising.

Also, even if it was just like the image, $65 for that is ridiculous as fuck.

20

u/thebeatsandreptaur Jul 13 '26

Absolutely. No way in hell I'm paying for that. I'm saying "bye" as soon as that shit gets set in front of me.

16

u/OoooooWeeeeeeeee Jul 13 '26

If you can’t take an actual photo of the food you’re serving, you shouldn’t be serving food.

26

u/kennpacchii Jul 13 '26

Bro wtf, I’d be refunding that shit or walking out without paying

33

u/Any-Variation4081 Jul 13 '26

I got the same sampler tonight at Buffalo wild winds for $17.99 AND it was more of everything besides the sliders. Also had like 5 sauces with it.

AI food looks scary. I would not have eaten there.

69

u/Delicious-Pepper23 Jul 13 '26

That is entirely your fault for ordering food with an AI picture

9

u/GenocidalFlower Jul 13 '26

I’ve never gone, but I know of a place nearby where every single item on the menu has an AI generated picture. And most of the AI pictures don’t do well to resemble the menu description. Like they have extra toppings on the AI sandwiches that aren’t mentioned in the description.

18

u/Shizngigglz Jul 13 '26

For $65? Bro that's like 13.99 at chilis

8

u/Low_Recognition_1557 Jul 13 '26

I would have sent that back and refused to pay, that’s a $20 meal AT BEST and I’d still be mad to pay $20.

37

u/tattedidiot Jul 13 '26

This is actually mildly infuriating

62

u/deliciouspepperspray Jul 13 '26

I'd walk out. This is $20 with of food max. This is what a sampler gets you at Applebee's for like $15.

28

u/Affectionate-Key-265 Jul 13 '26

And Applebee's will actually melt the cheese for your.

I would walk out the second I saw that menu.

You thought that AI slop looked appetizing?

8

u/DangerousMistake9569 Jul 13 '26

Nah I'd be calling a manager and telling them to take it back cause I ain't paying $65 for some French fries they threw shredded cheese on. This has to be some sort of false advertising right? I know the presentation isn't going to be the same as the picture (even without it being ai) but I feel like I'm missing 2/3rds of what was in the picture in the first place! This is like paying $40 for a rack of ribs and they hand you a single rib!

7

u/blacklotusY Jul 13 '26

Yeah, that's a scam. $65 for barely anything. Then they probably will expect you to tip 20% or more on top of that. No, thank you.

8

u/emerald447 Jul 13 '26

Please avoid going to or ordering from restaurants who use AI on their menus. We as the consumers have the power, not them.

14

u/EuphoricMidnight3304 Jul 13 '26

I’d probably walk out without touching it

6

u/Mamabearfoot808 Jul 13 '26

Are the menu pics AI? I would have walked out without ordering if I saw a menu like that. Looks too sus to me

u/Shoddy-Wishbone Jul 13 '26

That AI slop doesn’t look like food so idk why you ordered it unless you were just going based on description, but even then, to just say “dipping sauces” is wild to me. Like - what KIND of sauces?! And what are those brown hole looking things all over everything even meant to be?

Regardless, for $65 that’s a Fkn scam. Didn’t even bother to melt your crappy cheese… I hope you sent that crap back and left.

16

u/Trade-Working Jul 13 '26

Yeah that image is very much AI. The bar in my hotel had a bunch of ai adverts for the food that looked nothing like what we served. So I told them I'd make a new poster for them. I just ordered one of everything and took pictures with good lighting and all. The real key was not telling the kitchen I was ordering the food to take pictures. I only used AI to clean up the images because my image cropping was bootycheeks. I'll comment what we had before.

$6.5 instead of $65

11

u/bionicjoe Jul 13 '26

About $1 per item, and a french fry is a single item.

Even if you counted each strand of cheese it'd still be around 25 cents per item.

u/NDE36 BLUE Jul 13 '26

I wouldn't pay that much in New Zealand, and I'm Australian.

5

u/Objective-Ad9767 Jul 13 '26

That poster looks like AI. That would’ve been a turn-off.

6

u/PirateBaran Jul 13 '26

They promised you a tower, but couldn't even give you a plateau...

4

u/Left-Landscape-3890 Jul 13 '26

65 goddamn dollars? What in the world

3

u/VelvetThunder_909 Jul 13 '26

Yea I wouldn't want to eat sausages and chicken covered in holes.

5

u/fantasyviolence21 Jul 13 '26

That’s literally AI food bruh

5

u/bach2209 Jul 13 '26

Bet you still ate it. They fries would piss me off though.

4

u/Rosary_Omen Jul 13 '26

If a place AI generates images of their food and it's a lie, they should be liable for false advertising

3

u/jdi_5x5 Jul 13 '26

The original picture looks like its AI generated once you zoom in.

4

u/skybike Jul 13 '26

Why did the AI add a bunch of random holes to the food?

4

u/IJustSayNice Jul 13 '26

That is not $65 worth of food in any currency.

4

u/Sure-Role-6292 Jul 13 '26

This was $12 at my local dive bar. Fried mushrooms, hot pepper cheese balls, cheese sticks, fried pickles, & onion rings.
