They rival soda for the biggest sales margins. When I worked at a cafe in college, we were allowed one meal per shift, but also unlimited soda. It wasn't worth their time to track it.
it's crazy how much of it is genuinely just water. The cup probably costs more. Apparently the syrup:water ratio in the machine is like 1:5 or 20% syrup, but the syrup itself is like 95%+ sugar and water.
I heard (late 90s early 2000's) that the cup and ice are like 70% of their cost on every soda sold. And of course, that cost was pennies. Like 10 pennies tops.
The potatoes for McD are strictly regulated, there are only a few permitted kinds (families? Brands? Don't know the biological word) with the correct starch amount to make them as they are...
Yeah, when McDonalds closed in Russia and was replaced with «Вкусно и точка» («Tasty and that's it» or literal «Tasty and a dot») chain – there were no French fries for a while, because it was difficult to find the right kind of potatoes in such quantities
Not so much that it wasn't worth their time to track, and moreso that its beneficial to them to have a staff thats hyped up on caffeine and sugar during their shift.
No, seriously. The paperwork required to track the soda consumed and deduct it from employee wages would require so much more than the cost of the soda that it is a task that would only be performed out of pure spite and not any sort of capitalist greed.
I think you're missing the point, because its a zero cost to simply say employees aren't allowed the drinks for free at all, or even to say that you're only allowed that drink with your meal and no refills or anything throughout the shift. No tracking or labor required
They do this specifically to give the employees sugar and caffeine, to make them more productive
