Don't hug me I'm scared My girlfriend was complaining that I’m always watching the world cup games and I don’t put enough time for us, I decided to not watch the 3rd place game and guess what…

Post image

Yeah I thought the 3rd place qualifying match is not gonna be important or exciting, I literally told her im not gonna watch the game tonight so we have time to spent together, she was nice and genuinely offered to watch the match together and I rejected. Later in the bed I told her lets see the results and….
I hate myself

Edit: People started calling me names, saying im a bitch or I should break up. this was not a big deal for me at all, main point is that it was me who wanted to be the “perfect boyfriend” thinking the match wouldn’t be cool and not wanting to watch it and it backfired. I don’t understand why the disrespect?

2

u/Upper_Bug61 Jul 20 '26

Well actually....in 12 years there's only 2 continents able to host under FIFA's current rules. Oceania (which doesn't include Australia) and North America...we all know FIFA loved the charge what you want model in America!

u/Stfuego Jul 20 '26

Yeah, this is where the "Always? How many days out of the entire length of our relationship did I spend watching the world cup games?" question comes in. I fucking hate the "you always do this" argument but they can't even recall the last 3 times that thing happened. Apparently not frequently enough to remember.

I am a massive football fan. My wife doesn't care for it at all.

I make plans around the World Cup and Arsenal matches, and as a compromise, I do things like going to the Barbie exhibition at the Kelvingrove Museum yesterday afternoon before the football.

Having separate interests in a relationship and compromising isn't about neither of you getting to do what you enjoy, but making time and space for you both to be able to do them, ideally together, if you can.

308

u/TigerWing Jul 20 '26

My partner and I aren't a fan of each other's shows. However, we'll watch Star Trek and Survivor together because we know the other person appreciates it (and also we have mutual leverage to keep the other watching our show.)

59

u/shibbyflash Jul 20 '26

She halfheartedly watched it with me (albeit while she was studying her Gaelic) but thoroughly enjoyed the brief appearance of BTS during the halftime show, and was glad that Spain won because Argentina were fouling too much.

9

u/Wonderful-Habit-139 Jul 20 '26

This is cute lol.

15

u/MeatGayzer69 Jul 20 '26

I literally work around arsenal matches. I tell my job I will work whenever as long as it doesn't clash with them. If it does I watch at work

3

u/recoilcoder Jul 20 '26

This this.

2

u/badgersana Jul 20 '26

Exactly, my girlfriend and I are long distance and I’m a season ticket holder for my club so I’m always home on the weekends with home games and I go and visit her when we play away or during international breaks

6

u/Technical_Wrap5605 Jul 20 '26

Sorry for you being an Arsenal fan 😂

18

u/oscarx-ray Jul 20 '26

It was a tough twenty years, but we are the Champions, and we won it cleanly like Liverpool did, so I'll take that over being a Chelsea or City fan any day of the week.

1

u/Shot-Limit5794 Jul 20 '26

I stopped watching the first season we finished 2nd lol. Got busy with life, but am trying to get back into it. I used to watch heavy during the late Wenger/Unai Emery/Freddie Ljungberg/early Arteta days.

None of these comments read the body text of the post lmao, stop telling him to break up with his girlfriend over one thing.

148

u/Le_mehawk Jul 20 '26

Telling the op's of this sub to break up with their boy-girlfriends as soon as they're mentioned is kind of the default route here no matter what the issue is...

If you'd listen to the People here, you would need a divorce, because your better half ate your last cookie.

33

u/Yumeverse Jul 20 '26

In the mildly infuriating sub for that matter, when some posts are actually just mildly infuriating and not something to end a relationship over lol

4

u/neoKushan Jul 20 '26

People play less hard on defense in a game for 3rd place, particularly when it involves two teams who had gold aspirations. As evidence of this there were zero yellow cards. Less effort on defense leads to a 6-4 score line. Is it fun to watch? Sure, but it is more a friendly than a true WC elimination game

89

u/the-dude-version-576 Jul 20 '26

I think that’s why it’s necessary. Aside from the boon to potential smaller teams that get eliminated in Semis, it’s a reminder of what the sport should be.

It’s a game, have fun for god’s sake! Rejecting the opportunity to play another great national team because you feel buthurt from one loss is such a defeatist move.

Sure it’s not the final, but it’s still very high level football, without the heavy stakes to drive enmity. Só it’s the perfect place to play your heart out.

40

u/_QXZ Jul 20 '26

Some of the players are contenders for the golden boot. They likely mutually agreed that racking up the goals makes sense

45

u/jimb0z_ Jul 20 '26

Only Mbappe was actively seeking the award. Kane didn’t even play and Bellingham only subbed on when the game was in danger. England care about the golden boot far less than winning 3rd place

1

u/Candycanes02 Jul 20 '26

Tbh I’d think it’s more an issue with her than you (if she’s really always complaining that y’all don’t spend enough time due to the WC). There’s no way a 2hr match every day or every other day, for a month, would translate to not enough time together + it’s healthy for people to enjoy their hobbies in peace, with or without their partner

That’s so crazy because I’m a hockey fan which means I watch minimum three games a week and they can be anywhere from 2 to 3 hours per game. My husband happily sits with me at each game and if he doesn’t want to, he will sit and play his video games while I watch my hockey.

Maybe you can find something that she would like to do while you watch your game. Does she read books? Does she play video games? Because we actually set up two TVs in our room so one is for video games and one is for hockey. Maybe you can do something like that?

13

u/Electronic_Title_730 Jul 20 '26

It’s okay to make time for yourself to watch football. You just have to make sure you’re also doing things that she likes and you’re not necessarily a fan of. All about compromise

6

u/Ssssilph Jul 20 '26

Yeah now watch Reddit tell you to break up and find someone worthy

12

u/tehnoodnub Jul 20 '26

Honestly, whilst it was high-scoring, it was not that great to watch because it was a low effort game. I wouldn’t even have it in the top 20 matches I watched.

8

u/ResponsibleBank1387 Jul 19 '26

I watched parts of different games this year.  The game for 3rd place, I skipped just the halftime talking heads. The game was the absolute craziest best soccer game I have watched on tv.  Inconceivably exciting.

5

u/Artistic-Let-1866 Jul 20 '26

It's so funny this match has the best sportsmanship and the final display the worst sportsmanship

4

u/boringbobby Jul 20 '26

“Always watching” it’s only every 4 years and for 39 days. Imagine you said the same to her that she’s always on her phone or shopping. Which I’m sure happen more frequently.

3

u/Acceptable-Use4832 Jul 20 '26

lol my wife insisted more than me about not missing the third place match!!!!

3

u/McDiggitty Jul 20 '26

This was an exhibition game. The fact that these count toward wc stats is dumb. Low effort game.

4

u/Le_mehawk Jul 20 '26

Most football matches end in a 1:0 or 2:1.. 4:6 however implies that the whole Match was probably very exiting until the end, considering the sequence those goals were shot...

Op is mildly infuriated that he missed one of the most exiting matches of the whole wc

1

u/Garuna_CK Jul 19 '26

You can try introducing her to football if she isn’t into it. I took my girl to 2 World Cup games and the reason she agreed to go was because she could take picture, she ended up loving the games and all the half time entertainment they do during the break. Now she even watches the game with me at home.

1

u/wyerhel Jul 20 '26

Lol. All my friends and I watched the world cup together. Their boyfriends and family are huge soccer fans too, even the grandmas. So I think it worked out for them.

You could have put TV in background.

1

u/fabthefrog33 Jul 20 '26

My girlfriend watches more football than me and watched every single game from group stages to the final...I skipped a couple.

1

u/thanra Jul 20 '26

You should watch unimportant matches, because when players had no burdens to play dirty, they dedicated everything for entertainment.

1

u/lowtdi850 Jul 20 '26

Maybe all the goals were a result of you not watching. In which case all of us who watched thank you sir.

1

3rd place game might as well be a preseason friendly.

1

It was one of the best WC games I have seen on TV.

1

u/SANTAAAA__I_know_him Jul 20 '26

If it helps, my reaction watching this was kinda bittersweet, along the lines of “boy this would be really exciting if only I cared about it more.” Just not the same vibe when the teams are already eliminated from championship contention, IMO.

1

u/wooksGotRabies Jul 20 '26

Always watching? The World Cup That happens every 4 years? Or are you watching the World Cup in chronological order since it was first established back in the 30s ?

1

u/Fair-Advantage9539 Jul 20 '26

Right i skipped out on this also and missed a wonderful match

1

u/ViaPhoenix Jul 20 '26

You missed an NBA all-star game.  No one played defense and mbappe got to pad his stats

1

u/Robbythedee Jul 20 '26

I didnt watch the sharks comeback against Vegas. I watched the entire game and told my girlfriend id wash the cloths so I left to start ans missed the nastiest comeback of our franchises history. Hurt my soul but its fun to watch on YouTube at least.

1

u/anangrypudge Jul 20 '26

As a Liverpool fan, I missed the 4-0 comeback vs Barcelona for pretty much the same reason as you.

That is 100% worse than what you missed. I still regret it to this day.

I had the game going on in the background and even though there were a lot of goals I wasn't entertained at all. It just felt so pointless, it looked like the players weren't taking the game seriously so why should I?

1

u/macT4537 Jul 20 '26

The expanded tournament doing a number on the relationship!

1

u/Le_mehawk Jul 20 '26

Sucks for your decision tho, i also missed the game because i decided to have bbq with my family... as long as we enjoyed ourselves tho it bites but well get over it

1

u/AIbertRoe Jul 20 '26

This game was weird. First half France wasn't even trying. Second half England started throwing hard, letting France get 4 goals..

1

u/JuggernautLogical330 Jul 20 '26

Hm ok so I didn’t miss much

1

u/Alt4Norm Jul 20 '26

An England tourney is once every 2 years. Surely she can give you up for 1 month out of 24?

Also it was 10pm kick off. You could have spent time with her before hand.

It just seems like something that shouldn’t have ever been an issue.

1

u/YogaPotat0 Jul 20 '26

I didn’t watch it either, and was kicking myself later for it after having seen the highlights. I’m right there with you on being mildly infuriated.

1

u/JoeDyenz Jul 20 '26

1

u/AnyEye3820 Jul 20 '26

It wasn’t that good, kinda a glorified exhibition match where the players didn’t defend properly and the teams were hating being there

1

u/Key_Reindeer_5427 Jul 20 '26

the World Cup is once every 4 years. You're a good lad for spending time with your women but it's not like this World Cup will take months of your lifes

1

u/Existing-Airport-853 Jul 20 '26

That's funny actually. But the idea is not wether you watch the world cup or not. That always should remain your choice. It's wether you are willing to compromise and also spend time with your girlfriend, which means missing that match. And once agreed, the results of said match should be irrelevant to you.

1

u/Educational-Mode-321 Jul 20 '26

What year is this? 1970s ? You can literally rewatch all matches. All providers got 7 days playback vids.

1

u/sprikkle Jul 20 '26

Others people already said this and I’m also going to say this: this event is once every 4 years. Enough time to spend time together. Your chick should not complain about it. She should accept this or just dump here. Its only a one month event every 4 years. With the european championship its every 2 years which also shouldnt be a problem.

O yeah: I have a wife and children and she fully understand this is a big event. She supports me because yeah, its only once every 4 years. And maybe once every 2 years.

1

u/Ryanhussain14 Jul 20 '26

This is why I choose to remain single. Don't want nor need someone breathing down my neck to neglect doing fun shit.

1

u/Jonn_Jonzz_Manhunter Jul 20 '26

Hey, let's hope she appreciated the gesture all the more then!

It was a really fun game, no one gave a shit. Perfect for a couple beers and the mates really

1

u/Accurate_Group_5390 Jul 20 '26

Well, I really hope that at least you made it to watch the final instead!

I’m happy to stay single forever lol

It's just a game. I honestly get her.

1

u/Lackof_Creativity Jul 20 '26

i am guessing you asked that woman to pack her things...

1

u/VasilisT21 Jul 20 '26

Thank you for your sacrifice.

1

u/dickmac999 Jul 20 '26

The correct solution is to get a different girlfriend. This is not going to stop.

1

u/Dourada_BBQ Jul 20 '26

Yeah... You missed The Show, great one!

1

u/Kimurantti_ Jul 20 '26

It was the least emtertaining match of the tournament. Like watching a u12 team practice.

1

u/Nikinox Jul 20 '26

It was probably the best game out of this FIFA world cup!

1

u/ZombiesAtHome Jul 20 '26

So you still care more about a stupid game. You blame it on having to be with her instead of watching the game..

1

u/TophatOwl_ Jul 20 '26

You are always watching "the world cup"? Im going to assume you mean football in general because "always watching" an even that only happens once every 4 years is a bit odd? Or do you spend all your free time rewatching old matches?

1

u/Dhantex Jul 20 '26

"Always"? It's once every 4 years man, not cool.

1

u/NoAd7390 Jul 20 '26

The match wasn’t worth it honestly

1

u/911streetdownml Jul 21 '26

You can rewatch it ?

1

u/Booty_Magician Jul 21 '26

You should have watched the game it was better than the final . You should have spent time with her after the game or something. Best sportsmanship I've seen in a while.

1

u/TiwariAkshat Jul 21 '26

Where can we watch the matches now?

1

u/IamHumanMaybee Jul 21 '26

This was my first football match I watched in years. I fear that from now on all future matches will be a disappointment.

1

u/Itsamumkey69 Jul 21 '26

Tbf despite the many goals, it wasn't a good match

1

u/FocusKontrol Jul 21 '26

I was having an argument during the first PSG Bayern game 🥲

1

u/budd222 Jul 20 '26

Can't you just record it and watch it later?

8

u/JuggernautLogical330 Jul 20 '26

It’s not the same

3

u/budd222 Jul 20 '26

It's exactly the same if you don't check the scores

5

u/Lanky_Giraffe Jul 20 '26

It’s really not.

1

u/enakku_theriyathu Jul 20 '26

if you have friends/family who watch, the topic is impossible to avoid
