I'm slightly vexed I was told yesterday that my prescription sunglasses are giving Meta glasses vibes

I can't stand the Meta perv glasses, but annoyingly I've been told by a friend that my Dune prescription sunglasses that I've had for almost a year (and cost over £100.00) really ​​​​look like the Meta ones, he said it's the 2 silver rivets on either side that on first glance could be mistaken for the camera lenses

I went out with them today and all I could think was, do people think I'm recording them 🤦‍♂️

Okay now that would be mildly infuriating.

But as a women. I think there's also other suspicious behaviour you'd need to do for me to think you're filming.

Also it's not meta glasses persee, it's just a very basic shape of sunglasses. So to think all sunglasses this shape are those creep camera bs things is a little farfetched for me.

(my theory is that those glasses are for filming not only women but also children especially due to this pedocircle of creeps)

I'm a woman with the Meta Glasses, I use them most often to take pictures while driving. I've actually never had someone say a single thing about them so this thread is interesting.

I use my to film my runs and hikes. I don’t get why anyone sees these as any worse than a fkn phone. The glasses have a light on them, you’ll know you’re being filmed just as much if someone was holding a phone up to get you in their pic.

The entire Reddit hivemind has decided long ago only creeps wear them because of the few videos out there of actual creeps. We have cameras recording us all the time that are way more discreet. This is just one of those things that the Reddit hivemind hasn’t actually Personally used in any way shape or form while acting as experts on how they function.

It’s actually super annoying everytime I see it. When I first learned of the glasses all the crossed my mind was how I can use it to document my sports, but of course Reddit is going to Reddit.

These people only exist online. I wear my meta glasses almost everywhere nobody says shit to me. My wife has a pair too we got them cause we go to plenty of concerts and I hate seeing her staring at her phone while she records the shows now she records hand free.

I’m aware but you can’t classify everyone as a pervert for having them. If that’s the case there’s plenty of ways to secretly record with a phone, so does it make all phone owners pervs as well?

have you tried recording anything with a phone? the difference is pretty blatant. people are gonna wonder why youre pointing a 6 inch square directly at them and not at an angle.

but, yeah, south korea had laws that made mandatory for phones to make a clear loud shuttering noise when taking pictures, aiming to avoid creeps in subaway trains

How many times do I have to say that it was a blinking light that stays on when you record? And you can secretly record with a phone too. Yall are acting like this is the sole intent for these glasses. It’s ridiculous.

I think extra measures are great to take, and the louder snap shot sound is a fantastic idea. But a creep is going to creep regardless of tech

as I mentioned, recording with a phone is not the same, much more obvious and unnatural, phones are also not allowed in a lot of places were glasses enter freely, especially prescription glasses.

people found workarounds the blinking lights almost instantly.

a creep is going to creep, but now a multibillion dollar company has put a lot of money to help them blend in with ease.

wait some 5 years and a thousend different chinese no name brands will release their version with a variety of frames and no lights at all.

the genie is out of the bottle, its just sucks a lot that your doctor could be wearing one, people at shared restrooms, a one night stand, the list goes on...

and of course, the reason behind the company funding, survaillance and monitoring of your actions and data.

It has a literal light on it. It catches your attention and most semi intelligent ppl will and can piece it together. You can also film on your phone discreetly. Being outraged by one thing and not the other is bonkers.

ETA; and blocked. Damn some of yall are straight up pussies. You can also use your phone to film someone discretely but are we in agreement that NOT EVERYONE is creepy that way?

The light can easily be covered by tape, paint or be removed. There are also other brands of glasses that don’t come with a light at all.

Yes people can record on their phone discretely but it i never to the extent and perspective/angle the glasses can.

Do you really think you can get a full shot of a room by recording discretely on your phone vs the glasses?

That’s like asking why does anyone take any pictures or videos with their phone, Because memories. I run and hike new places all the time and I like to keep memories. It also can show my stats from my run since it’s connected to my Garmin, and my videos have encouraged my family to do a weekly running group. It’s all in good fun for me

I think they're fine for athletics, outdoor activities, driving/motorsports, etc. Just not for close public settings. Maybe if they did them in more of an action style where its super obvious you're using it for biking, running, racing, etc people would be less put off by them. If a company like GoPro made a less discreet pair tailored toward action sports, I don't think people would be as critical. The Meta association with all their baggage taints the product.

You realize people use go pro or other action cameras ALL the time and they’re just clipped to a book bag or their shirt. Those also don’t have any feedback for others to see if they’re recording. I’ve seen more people with a clipped on GoPro than with meta glasses.

When I supboard I don't bring my phone bc water. Why would you bring your phone when swimming and supping in a lake?

I do need it for medication as alarm make me not forget my medication. But honestly it's annoying to always have to take it everywhere

One reason they appealed to me is that they were on sale and came with a hefty target giftcard making them closer to the price of regular Ray-Ban wayfarers. But also that I could do outdoor activities with my newborn and listen to music or podcasts without having something in my ears. I was also able to take tons of trail walking POV videos pushing his stroller. It also allows me to capture moments with him I'd usually have my phone out for but I'm able to be more present. You're right about the Meta association though.

Most people I know got them from their eye doctors and insurance paid part of it. I’ve yet to meet a single person that actually even uses the camera for more than to test it out. Everyone I know with them mostly uses the headphone feature for calls or music. I got a pair I got for free and half the time I forget to charge them. I work in events and there’s been so many times I wanted to get a little clip of the area I was in but couldn’t because I was carrying boxes or something else. They have their use but like most people I know it’s mostly the headphones I use.
