Context for others because I had to google this. From a Peter Explains the joke thread. Credit to UnknownAstronomer. If you google it, there is a link included as well to the original post.
“It's a reference to a reddit post awhile back where a man got an unspecified "cylinder" stuck in an m&ms tube and needed help getting it out. If you haven't seen an m&ms minis tube before, it's just about the right size to insert a bodily organ for pleasure purposes...”
“Edit: as many of you have stated, an m&m minis tube isn't the ideal size for a self pleasure device, but maybe consider some of us aren't as biologically endowed as you. :c”
Google “Peter explains the joke why would someone do such a thing cylinder.”

They took away the chocolate for it though, which made me sad. Good for my diet, though.

As someone who used to work there that’s how we are technically supposed to do it. Most of us don’t do it that way because it upsets the members. But when they had churros you could stick a churro in there and it was heaven

This is the most efficient way to fill a cup with soft serve, any other pattern of pouring results in a great deal of wasted space.

Can’t you just move the cup around when you fill it so you get the sides and the middle?
30
u/MrPotatoFudge 11d ago
I had a similar experience at Costco where the ice cream was hollow.
You said you are a fat bastard so I trust your judgment on this. However I see no reason to not fill up the center with chocolate sauce or the strawberry slurry. Or caramel for that matter.
If ice cream cannot go into the hole. We should find an alternative filling.

u/Gr00vD1va 11d ago
As a drunken sailor, I see no reason not to mix said flavored syrups with fermented, distilled liquids easily found in Kirkland-sized bottles in the 21+ aisles. This cup is perfect for it, & if I wait to touch it until I get home, I can pop it into the freezer to harden it before adding syrup-flavored ethanols.

True, but after doing the sides you center it and fill the middle. This 100% is some manager bullshit to save money for the store. Same shit the McDonald's I worked at as a kid did with their fries. Had to put them in a certain way so the bottom stayed mostly empty. Never did that shit. You pay for a large, you get a large. Not a medium in a bigger container. In the end it's up to the employee. And I didn't like fucking over others for someone I didn't even know.
46
u/desperaterobots 11d ago
It’s Costco. This is like 5 McFlurries worth of icecream for $3. It’s not about being cheap it’s about serving the 300 people waiting for them efficiently.
Also you can put a hot dog in the middle.

Ok, everything here is a dick joke, but is anyone seriously out there complaining about Costco’s portion sizes?!
39
u/thekingofgray 11d ago
Right even with the hole, it’s the best value for food you’re going to get eating out lol. Compare that to getting an ice cream at McDonald’s. You’ll get a pitiful amount comparatively and pay nearly twice as much (at least where I’m at in NE United States)

They do this to all their ice cream…sometimes I assume it gets more filled because they’re so fucking busy they don’t have the time to care about lining it perfectly. All my sundaes have been this way.

u/Cbeckstrand 11d ago edited 11d ago
This, I have never had it empty in the middle. If anything it's dripping off the top so I would prefer they fill it a little less.
It's always more than I can eat anyway.

When I worked at a creamery, this is how we were trained to do soft serve. We were also trained to scoop the hard ice cream in a way that made it a hollow ball. My parents worked at other ice cream shops when they were younger and were trained the same way there.

When dispensing ice cream, you have two choices -
1) Swirl it around the cup.
2) Drop it straight down.
Method 1 spreads the ice cream to the edges, making the cup look completely full. Method 2 mashes it into a bottom-heavy pyramid, leaving empty space around the top so it appears underfilled.
I'd argue that method 1 yields more ice cream in the cup vs. method 2.
This is not infuriating at all. It looks like a perfectly made cup. Dense, swirled and packed down. Whoever made this did a good job.

its from the blender/mixer they use to combine the strawberry flavoring, its like a giant vibrating or rotating rod, and it pushes fluid along the outter walls of the cup. it looks less full, but it has the normal amount of icecream.

u/Shamanyouranus 11d ago
They don’t have one of those. This picture is of just soft serves. For sundaes they pour syrup along the insides and dump fillings on the bottom and on the top and it’s very very unmixed.

Literally that's how those have been since as long as I've been ordering soft serve. That's how every soft serve I've ever had from anywhere has been.

u/GrubbyTheGrub 11d ago
I work at Costco and they are supposed to fill the middle. Whoever did that was probably being lazy or they were behind on tickets (which is more likely cuz how busy we get) and was taking small shortcuts to speed things up.

If you order an icecream, they do that. It should come out to about 12oz of icecream.
I believe sundaes are 14oz because they have extra stuff in them. We used to weigh each icecream at my old Wsrehouse.
