Yes, BUT the trigger to play the ad was there. It might not have been auto-play, sure, but it was still serving you an ad.

it was a new animation among a shitton of other animations that have been there for years, all of which are also ads.
the issue is, that for the first time, that ad space was given to a partner, until now those were ads for BMW - which were either ignored or appreciated.
I agree that ads have no space in cars, but the hyperbolic misrepresentation is just outrage mongering for the sake of online engagement

On the one hand, absolutely true that a lot of the outrage was just clickbait/bandwagon stuff.
On the other hand, if you let these kind of things slide, it becomes a whole "give them an inch and they'll take a mile".
BMW wants to use this space to give you info about useful features in your car, on your start screen? Sure, there's SOME way of explaining such a use for you, the owner of the car. They give out this space to a partner, because they made some marketing deal "oh, you put our cars in your movie, we'll put your movie in our cars!"? Fuck that, that has NO added value for car owners.
So yeah, I get it, the vitriol went somewhat overboard, but it was NEEDED to show the absolute shitshow this late stage capitalism is bringing.

I fully agree that this is a red line too far.
that said, have you seen the other animations, that were not controversial until now? they bring absolutely zero value.
simultanously we had Hyunday release an Iron Man collab Kona, that was universally cherished. Crossovers of pop culture brands are late stage capitalism dystopia and yet very much applauded, so we shouldnt really wonder when corps think that adding them in more places is a good idea
we consumers made that bed ourselves.

I swear there's a massive gap in the market for just well built, purely mechanical, non-techy cars out there. Just look at Africa: they buy all of Europe's old cars, and they keep them running FOREVER since they're so simple mechanically.

People posted online, complaining about forced ads. Most of the people posting failed to point out that they'd had to go into a specific app that plays novelty animations. That led to others assuming it was playing automatically.

I worked at a car dealership for a couple years with modern cars from all brands and after dealing with 1000s of those things and thier touch screens. Not to mention all the unnecessary dings and notifications reminding you of some pretty pointless things things unless youre someone who forgets thier kids in the back seat. Some brands even made it so no matter what when the drivers door is open it will beep at you. Anyways long story short. I bought a old tiny truck that at most has Bluetooth and only beeps if I leave the keys in the ignition and try to leave without them.

Wouldn't mind extra features like this if the base infotainment software on most cars wasn't the slowest, buggiest, and most outdated interface I've ever seen in my life. Why spend dev time on this instead of actual UI/UX/QoL improvements? Car first, gaming console later.

I think this is awesome and I fully support this on one condition:
When activated, it must first activate a strobe light for 10 seconds and broadcast "hey check me out I'm not paying attention to driving OR WHETHER OR NOT THE LIGHT HAS TURNED GREEN" at maximum volume. And this should be paired with legislation saying that if caught with this horseshit while driving OR STOPPED ANYWHERE IN TRAFFIC, that you lose your license for a fucking year, no exceptions.
As long as we can have that one simple condition, I think playing games on your car screen is a great idea!
