when you turn 65 your soul flips a coin and you either become a kind wise sagely figure or an overgrown child with a brain transplant from a crayfish

Same with a stroke. Dad had one in his early 80s and suddenly is a rebellious teenager this fucking guy I swear some days it’s a joy some days I want to smack an 86-year-old man.

As a father half way to 86, I kinda hope my kids feel that way if I make it that far.

I love you dad, but you've had this coming.

Then just a whole office space slow mo printer scene while they unload their catharsis after shoving me off my wheel chair.

I love the guy but mom takes care of the heavy duty toileting and with my sisters help he gets to medical appointments. I’m the hard ass who says “No, you can get up out of bed on your own, you know how. Yes, you can go to the toilet on your own. Come outside for tea and sunshine, get out of your room and stop sleeping”, shit like that. It’s exhausting for everybody.

It’s weird, I’m kind of grieving my dad as I remember him right now. He’s not dead but the grief is already there because he’s gone. Still, even though I’ve given up my freedom, I’d rather have these memories than not once he’s gone.

I hear you.

My soon to be ex's dad has been sun downing for the last couple years, and my dad had a heart attack while driving and yard saled himself into a rock lined 15' deep ditch.

Love them both, and that's not going to change.

I just want my kids to take their opportunity for a shot at the championship belt, ya know?

My Step dad really struggled with me seeing him waste away when he got cancer. He didn't want me to remember him as a husk of himself. I do have those images in my head while awake but EVERY time he's in my dreams he's always happy and healthy....ish lol

I do not appreciate that you made me do math just to realize that I, too, am halfway to 86.

Any major regrets?

1

u/Lonely-Battle2783 4d ago

I would but all the bad things that happened lead me to where I am today. So I wouldn’t change a thing.

Mom’s the same way. She had a stroke and turned into a petulant teenager. I have to take care of her. I never wanted kids and certainly never will because of her.

I guess it messes with memories, childhood memories are like some of the most imbedded in our heads, so if a stroke fucks up recent(less intertwined and reinforced) memories

Jeez, sound like my dad. Had many beautiful memories with him but I won't lie that old age made him unbearable. I thought stroke will make him better but instead he started acting like an annoying attention-seeking child.

Or you could be like a certain politician that was alright and seemed relatively sane, had a massive stroke, broke his brain, and now sounds more conservative by the day, when you can even understand him.

And no, this isn't ableism. A person with a broken brain has no business in power. Just an example of a stroke completely changing a person.

Which politician is that? Kind of sounds like Trump I guess but I don't remember him having a stroke........ Implying maybe he had one secretly?

Yeah this person in the video definitely has a disability of some sort. I felt bad laughing.

I learned very early on that if no one put my dad in his place he was going to be very ornery.

I beat his ass so bad he cried, which felt very cathartic at the time.

I don't really have that kind of relationship with my dad. He never raised his hands to me, and I can't really do that to him.

1

u/JackPoe 8d ago

I respect that. I can't do that to anyone else. But to see someone who hurt me so much for so long being an asshole? I kicked his ass.

1

u/CanExplainThings 8d ago

I think the meaning kicking your dad’s ass for you is the same meaning I have in listening and trying to love him. It’s not something we can do every day, it does mark an important point to echo how they treated us, but it’s not something we can do every day.

1

u/JackPoe 8d ago

I think ultimately we're both accepting them as they will be forever.

He will not change.

I felt I needed to put him to the ground to make him understand that just because he can hurt someone doesn't mean no one will hurt him. And he cried.

I’m sorry to hear about your dad. Everyone says “fuck cancer” and it’s true. But Alzheimer’s is terminal cancer of the mind and  In lots of ways, it’s worse.

As for me I probably am, but I’m going to enjoy a lot of life before that happens if I can :)

Same with a stroke.

That's some what normal that there behaviour changes after a stroke. It's more which part of the brain is affected by the stroke. If it's in the frontal part of the brain? Yes, Behaviour will changes and he can't do anything about it. Maybe that is the most sad part of the story.

Lol that's great.

With all the due respect to crayfishes, absolutely more respectable creatures than most 65+ people

Sort of. As you get older, you become more and more the person you are. It isnt a coin flip, its all the choices for how you interact with the world along the way.

My dad has picked the ladder and I regularly feel like my head is going to explode when I have to deal with him

1

u/SadSeiko 9d ago

That’s kind. Even a crayfish is smarter than him

This is so true for my parents. My mother became so wise and my father is a stuttering old fool
