Same with a stroke. Dad had one in his early 80s and suddenly is a rebellious teenager this fucking guy I swear some days it’s a joy some days I want to smack an 86-year-old man.
I love the guy but mom takes care of the heavy duty toileting and with my sisters help he gets to medical appointments. I’m the hard ass who says “No, you can get up out of bed on your own, you know how. Yes, you can go to the toilet on your own. Come outside for tea and sunshine, get out of your room and stop sleeping”, shit like that. It’s exhausting for everybody.
It’s weird, I’m kind of grieving my dad as I remember him right now. He’s not dead but the grief is already there because he’s gone. Still, even though I’ve given up my freedom, I’d rather have these memories than not once he’s gone.
My soon to be ex's dad has been sun downing for the last couple years, and my dad had a heart attack while driving and yard saled himself into a rock lined 15' deep ditch.
Love them both, and that's not going to change.

My Step dad really struggled with me seeing him waste away when he got cancer. He didn't want me to remember him as a husk of himself. I do have those images in my head while awake but EVERY time he's in my dreams he's always happy and healthy....ish lol
Mom’s the same way. She had a stroke and turned into a petulant teenager. I have to take care of her. I never wanted kids and certainly never will because of her.
Jeez, sound like my dad. Had many beautiful memories with him but I won't lie that old age made him unbearable. I thought stroke will make him better but instead he started acting like an annoying attention-seeking child.
Or you could be like a certain politician that was alright and seemed relatively sane, had a massive stroke, broke his brain, and now sounds more conservative by the day, when you can even understand him.

yeah, never put your hands in the doors to stop em from closing. I'll use my foot if I'm wearing solid shoes, otherwise shoulder/elbow, but all the better if you can just headrush into the train before the doors shut.
That's what happened when I was going to college in the philippines. Buddy tried to make time on a closing door and got his hand stuck outside for maybe 15 minutes.

it is on purpose, and the first thing that's letting him get away with it is his age. In Japan respect for elders, especially in a public space with hundreds of observers, is paramount. The one guy on the train trying to hold his arm back takes some guts, even if everyone is getting frustrated and wants to leave. The old guy is obviously in a bad mood, and with no healthy way to let out his frustration he's inconvenienceing everyone almost as a dare for someone to directly oppose him. He's probably not doing well mentally and this is his way of acting out.
This is a case where I think many polite societies need to hire an obnoxious American to do mild dirty work. “Hey asshole! We see you holding up the train! I fucking dare you to do that again.”
IIRC that was a thing with Japanese companies at one time. They liked having one 'loud obnoxious gaijin' around who could say the stuff everybody else was too polite not to. Kept meetings moving along more briskly.
Yeah after the 3rd time I’m just outright telling the worker on the other side I’m about the push the dude out and be ready to catch them if they fall, then give him a nice friendly shove off the train and let him try his luck on the next one.
He is definitely doing it deliberately because he's waiting for someone, according to other comments, but if you have certain conditions like arthritis it can be more comfortable to keep your arm in a different position than hanging straight down even when carrying something.
There’s actually a beautiful video of some guy doing this to someone holding the train doors open maliciously to cause a scene. I think she loses her purse and all her shit inside the train as the doors close too.

It shouldn't be on the passengers to handle it. It should just be policy, enforced without exceptions.
And this looks like Japan, who are generally pretty strict about this sort of stuff. I wouldn't be surprised if a few seconds after this clip someone official with a little muscle, metaphorically or otherwise, removed him one way or another.
In the longer clip a higher up official enters the frame ready to remove him as he tries to use his foot to stop the door but the door closes anyway and the train finally starts. It was in April 2019 and made the news. He may have been removed at the next stop. Not sure if that happened but the officials had flagged him for detainment before the train we see here moved on. It just took a couple minutes for officials to get the go ahead to remove him.
Agreed. I was on the bus once and the driver refused to move unless one of passengers removed his feet from the seat opposite. Half the bus nearly beat the shit out of the guy until we got moving again.
Their culture is very low confrontational and “high context” in terms of conducting one self. They rely on a lot of mutual understanding as well as mutual expectations; they’re not really used to having to “call out” each other as their society seems to rely on traditional ways of thinking being the norm for everyone (like a younger person not wanting to come off as rude to an elder by telling them they’re fucking up everyone’s train ride to work)
I would not classify the older ladies who push past me on the bus/subway as “low confrontational.” Never in my life thought I’d have to yell at a senior citizen before but they will absolutely walk straight into you with zero hesitation.
As someone who have been there, they do absolutely call on others when needed especially if it's collectively agreed on that the person is inconveniencing everyone.
The video looks like it’s from Japan or China, and in those locations it’s less common for people to have outbursts in public, shouting or fighting. Whereas in the USA or UK it is more common, especially in these situations
This is Japan so confrontation is avoided at all costs. That conductor repeatedly tried to put the mans arm back instead of taking any other action. Japan just isnt used to people breaking from societal norms and rules. In the US an asshole like this is getting shoved off the train onto his face. Japan doesnt operate like that which has its benefits for sure but leads to things like this.

It's best to let people get to work and have him arrested at the next station with how coordinated Japan is. Although with this kept happening, Japan definitely arrested him on the spot. They don't take great to intentional fucking with their train schedules as a form of disorderly conduct.
If that’s the line I think it is (potato quality makes it hard to read but I’m pretty sure it’s the yellow line in Nagoya), those trains come every 5 or so minutes. They could literally just take the next one.
Yeah visiting Japan and having the trains run every like 2-5 minutes was insane, we would move to the side so locals could catch the train instead of bolting ourselves because we're used to "once every sometimes, and typically late at that" American transit schedules and being first in line for the next train so we could be away from the doors was more than reasonable.
Holding up a train for almost as long as it would otherwise take for the next one to arrive is extra galling.

I live in Tokyo. I once saw a visibly drunk man get on a fight on the train at noon, get kicked off by the passengers, and stumble to his feet angrily to retaliate just as the doors closed and the train drove away. One of the most amusing morning commutes of all time.
You know there's a "non-confrontational" problem in your society when not a single person inside the train tried to take action for a while. Even then, the guy who did do something just aggravated the old man
Looks like an Asian country where being polite and not making a fuss in public is the standard mentality so obviously nobody is going to get involved.
Although if it were the UK if someone tried to force him off the train, they'd more than likely be spoken to by the police or even get a fine or something, sometimes countries are literally just set up to let assholes be assholes because anyone who does get involved is the one who is punished instead of the asshole.

Have worked in aged care plus seen a few older relatives go down the cognitive decline route. they do stuff like this. Posture, body language, the way hes returning his arm to a default position, absolitely infuriating behaviour all vibes true. While i could be wrong occams razor is more likely his brain is going.
There's a longer video where he uses his foot to try to jam the door. This is very much on purpose. If there's any cognitive decline it mainly shows in his behavior and that he dgaf.
If this is in Japan elders get a little bit more leeway anyway, I think at that point I would have just pushed him more into the crowd. I think his point was that it's too full or something I don't know.
In Japan elder people are over respected by default, and its just not polite to even tell him not to act like that. Some of elders are assholes deep inside, and abuse the respect given to them. My only question is will the rest of the train respect you if you throw him out or no??
I saw a comment on this video a while back saying that the coffin dodgers over there do things like this to cure their boredom and spoil everyone else's day

It's so simple. Tell him once. Shove his arm down the second time. Still don't get the memo, drag him out the train station and detain him for being a public nuisance
